I actually have a couple of questions if ANYONE can help me, I would apprecicate it. First of all, I'm running XP Home edition on my computer. Over the weekend I downloaded the SP2 trying to keep my machine updated. I started developing issues so decided to uninstall the SP2. Now I'm receiving Windows\System32 errors when I reboot and periodically when on the computer. I'm also receiving a buffer overrun on the Internet Explorer which eliminates my taskbar completely. I'm not sure if the Spyware Detector on my machine is causing this, so I tried to uninstall in under the remove programs and it will not uninstall. What a mess!! Please if anyone has any sugg…

Unticking an item in WIN.INI
by Guest Lexxstar- 2 replies

What will happen if I untick an item in Win.INI in the System Cinfiguration Utility? I ask this because when I was checking it tonight I noticed a program that I had installed then uninstalled later as it was causing conflicts, still had a tick next to it. I didn't expect to find it here i.e. WIN.INI I have unticked it, and got the message that "changes will not take place till I restart the computer". I am on unfamiliar ground here and wonder what will happen (if anything) when I switch off, then start up again, also why was the program there if I had deleted it via the Add/Remove Programs. The program was LogicHitKit from eMagic. all help and advice app…

tabbed browsing
by Guest hjsn1- 4 replies

I do like the tabbed browsing feature. I know a lot of you complain about it. One thing I don't like about it is not being able to open a new tab with the current tabs contents in it. Anyway, I used my computer one evening, using tabs and doing everything normally. The next morning, without restarting, my tabbed browsing was gone. It is enabled. I tried to disable it, close IE, then re-enable it, but it didn't work. I even went as far as to download and re-install IE 7 still with no success. On the "file" menu, where it has "new tab," it is gray and not "clickable." I don't know what to do. I am quite knowledgable about computers so, if you could, please g…

by Guest compnewb- 2 replies
ok so heres the deal. I installed XP a week ago and cannot install the service packs. I have installed every other sectury hotfix, and other updates except for the service packs. I tried SP2 and it gets to the "estimating space for uninstallation" before it gives me the error message "Insufficient Space on c:\Windows\$NtServicePacvkUninstall$" It says it requires 1 additional megabyte of free space. I then tried to install SP1 and still nothing. The thing is i have 30GB free on my harddrive. What could be causing this problem? (brand new hard drive by the way)

Then I can click to sign off the email site and it will click again go black and come back to a smaller size. I am reading to throw the computer out the window. So Frustrated

DOS prompt command (long directory names)
by Guest Don Culp- 2 replies

In a command window, I use the following prompt command: prompt $P$_$G which gives a prompt something like: C:\mydirectory1\mydirectory2 >_ However, after running certain DOS programs from this command window and then exiting these programs, each long directory name in the prompt is shortened to a maximum of 8 characters: C:\mydire~1\mydire~2 >_ Is there an easy way to restore the original prompt with its long directory names? I need a method that will work on any path with long directory names, since I frequently move around among such directories within the command window. (I know that I can type "cd C:\mydirectory1\mydirectory2" but this …

Explorer very slow
by Guest Terry Pinnell- 17 replies

Simple operations like moving up a folder tree are beginning to take forever. This is a problem that I've raised before over the years in various newsgroups and forums. Sometimes it sort of gets back to tolerable speed, other times like now it's glacial. Inconsistent too. Sometimes, once I've managed to open a large folder (30 secs isn't unusual), subsequently opening its subfolders is at the normal brisk speed. Taking it as read that I do all the 'obvious' stuff (like defragmenting, regular deletion of temporary files, etc), does nay one have any thoughts on a possible cause please? I've used FileMon and RegMon occasionally to look for clues, but no real s…

by Guest Jeff Granger- 3 replies

(apologies for cross post but this looked like a more active group) Just got new company laptop that was set up to log on to a domain in the office. (ctrl-alt-del > user name + password). In trying to connect to my home network to transfer some files I changed the Domain to Workgroup under System > Computer Name > Rename, and put in the name of my home Workgroup. I didn't change anything else. Rebooted. Now I get to the ctrl-alt-del bit but by user name and password are not accepted. Any suggestions how I might get back in? Jeff
