Hi, Can anyone help or point in the right direction please? Have a PC which had a load of virus's on it. Have since installed virus software and cleaned the hard drive. I do now have a problem though. Whenever I boot up it asks for the Administartor password. I don't know it, have never set it, never even seen this prompt before my virus issues. Now I can only boot in safe mode. If I transmit a blank password it just logs me off again. Running XP Home. Any ideas? Cheers, Sean

by Guest Martin Waddell- 16 replies

When the computer is first switched on and my wife logs onto her account she can send and receive email. The same applies if I switch on and go to my account. However if either logs off and the other logs on no email can be sent or received. Even logging off and logging back on to ones own users account causes the same problem. Switching users rather than logging off causes no problems The standard error of problems with ports 25 and 110 and socket error 10001 . Error number ox800cccoe. Any help will be much appreciated

Windows XP keeps crashing
by Guest amber- 12 replies

Hello, I'm trying to help fix a PC running Windows XP that has been crashing for almost the last year. Every few months the system crashes with the error message "File Failure - Cannot load System32\Config\Software corrupt, absent or not writeable. Beginning dump of physical memory." On reboot same message appears, and unable to run in safe mode. I have been able to recover from this by copying the config files from the 'repair' folder, and the system runs fine for a while then seems to crash again. I've tried reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP Professional, but it hasn't fixed it. Now last week it crashed again, with the e…

by Guest Peter- 5 replies

We get a 4 year old XP machine and it is getting slow. The HD is always being accessed (The light is flashing). Some fellow suggests that it is the slow HD and some one suggests that the memory is not sufficient and paging all the time. We have started Performance Monitor and get some rough information when it is slow 1) Available Memory is around 18MB 2) Average Disk Queue Length is 1.281 and Max is 4.6 3) Average Paging File is 30% We would like to know what is Disk Queue Length ? Thanks

faint images of program windows appearing
by Guest Laughingstar~*- 6 replies

I have XP Pro SR2, and all updates, with Office 2003, OE, using Avast, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D (occ.about 1/month), and Windows Firewall is on... The past two weeks my IE has crashed several times, and I'm getting images of prior windows/screens overlapping on the monitor...rather like a very slow slide show--can't figure out what's going on. These are partial images of whole screens, like a button that is clicked on a webpage, or a border from one side of something. At that point, everything become impossible to work with, and/or freezes. Also, my screen reader (ZoomText or Dragon) continues reading like everything was fine--IOW, it is not interrupted. …

Retrieving data from hard drive to put on new drive
by Guest Matt- 2 replies

I will explain the situation first: my primary drive failed, so I replaced it. I have formatted and installed XP OS and drivers so I can use my computer. Now, I wish to recover all of my user-data still present on the original drive (which used to be my OS hard drive). Right now, I have my new OS hard drive as my bootable drive and the "old hard drive" as my secondary. When I open my user file, f:/documents and settings/jazzman, on the old hard drive, I see 0 bytes and the file says "access is denied". How do I gain access to this folder to retrieve the 120GB of information directly so I don't have to spend days backing to DVD then transferring? Than…

Have I overburdened our 6 Gig HD with XPsp2?
by Guest TimLewis- 6 replies
How big is a minimal XPsp2 OS? My wife has an old notebook which barely passes the minimal requirements for XP and I installed XP Home on it and after downloading SP2 (express install) it now takes up half the hard disk (i.e. 3 Gig out of the 6 Gig hard disk). Is this too much? I had thought that a small/express XPsp2 would only take up about 1.5 Gig. She really only needs the notebook to write her thesis and use the web for journal articles and email but I wanted to have more leftover space so the pc won't be too overloaded/weighed down. Should I revert back to SP1 and look for lightweight alternatives to SP2 features? Any help appreciated.

When the desktop finally can be seen, before all applications have been loaded, then screen starts to change color (like bleacing effect) goes from white to black and locks up. After enough time has passed for the screen saver to pop up, the desktop will re-appear briefly then the same problem occurs. Virus, bad hardware? Thank you for your input and help in advance. Marcos

Waitable Timer on Task Bar ?!?!
by Guest Albert- 1 reply

Hello! I have 3 monitors on my system. In order to expand my taskbar, I use a great little software call MultiMon. However, lately, on my expanded taskbar I've been getting an icon that says "WaitableTimer". It doesn't seem to do anything, though. Is there any way to get it out of there? Sometimes I just right click it and close it. However, I've been getting some BSOD's. Is it possible that I'm getting the BSOD's because I close the Waitable Timer? Best regards Albert C
