Terminal Services service and Windows Security Alerts
by Guest Jerry- 7 replies
Hi all, Does anybody have any experience with Windows Security Alerts (the red shield on the system tray) not working if the Terminal Services service isn't running? I like to have the alerts on just in case something goes wrong such as my antivirus program doesn't start properly. I was contemplating disabling the Terminal Services service because I don't believe I need it. However, when it's disabled and the computer is restarted (to stop the service), the Windows Security Alerts don't come up. I test the alerts by turning off Automatic Updates and making sure the Windows Security Alerts are configured to warn me if Automatic Updates is not on. …

Driver ERROR with USB Jump Drives - Sandisk
by Guest Roby- 4 replies

Long story short - my hard drive was out of space so installed a larger one and reinstalled XP pro - and all updates and SP2, etc (it was a terrible fight). Finally got everything working but whenever I pop-in one of those mini usb drives (Sandisk) the install wizard screen pops up and says an error occured "One of the filter drivers installed for this device is invalid". But then all the devices work fine - so the only issue is the annoying error message. Can this be easily fixed ? And yes, the devices work fine on other XP pro machines. Sandisk of course says its a porblem with my MS drivers and they are probably right - thanks for any help !

Hello all ! I have a computer that only i myself use. There is only one user, no other. Since the day I had it, everytime I turn the machine on, after it boots and all that, it goes straight to the XP desktop for me. Just the other day, I downloaded the doenetfx thingys from microsoft website, and installed all 3 of them. Then this happens - Now, after my computer boots, it goes through the same motion, but then it stops at the "Click on your username" screen. I find this totally ridiculous. I am the only one user, and on that "Click on your username" screen, there is ONLY ONE USER there, yours truly. Since I am really really lazy, and hate to do t…

Remote Access between 2 x XP ADSL machines
by Guest Blackberry- 5 replies

Hi All Just wondered if you had any ideas on this one. I have 2 x nursery schools that are 2 separate buildings, but are only the width of a road apart, ie they are separated by a single road. We are looking to install ADSL at both sites and rather than email files between sites or walk backwards and forwards across the road, we wanted to put in place a sort of network link so that machines on both sites had a designated shared 'folder' that they could drop things in and the other site could pick up - does that make sense? Basically if I was on a standard LAN and I had a shared folder others could have access to that shared folder only and drag and…

Help! All of a sudden I can no longer login to my Admin account. I get an error message to the effect that account have been locked out due to 3 unsuccessful attempts. Several hours later I try again and I was able to get in except that I got another message to the effect that the security log is full. I emptied the security log and created another admin account. I'm still finding a problem logging in with both of them. Any idea as to how can this happen and also how do I resolve it. Thank you very much Mike

I am running sp2 on Windows Media Center 2002. My Movie Maker exe file gives me version 01 of the program (dated 8/10/04). I can't find a download and I'm told it should have updated with SP2 or subsequently as SP2 updated. Can anybody tell me a way to update my Movie Maker program (short of buying Vista). Thanks.

Windows XP Synchronization, Changed Profiles, Files Gone?
by Guest dan@punkrulz.com- 1 reply

Hey guys, I am having a serious problem here with a few users, which is fall out from a project that was just recently completed. Over the past week, we were in the process of doing a domain migration. We had taken the entire side of the building down connection wise, and had to go to each workstation to join them to the new domain. Any user (about 5) who was using document redirection to their home folder on the server was no longer able to synchronize their files. When they were brought back online, they were joined to the new domain, which then created a new profile for that user. Any user who was doing the document redirection did not have a "My Docu…

Desktop.ini and slow start-up
by Guest Ted Kerin- 3 replies

I found that it was taking 5-6 minutes for WinXP(SP2) to boot-up, much longer than ever before. Then, I found that I could reduce that time to about 2 mintes, by removing almost all files from my desktop. I was never a good "housekeeper," never kept the desktop tidy on any PC, so I wondered why only recently does it make such a big difference. If I now allow even a few MB of, say, MP3 files to accumulate on the desktop, the start-up stime stretches out very long again. Also, this may be a separate issue, but I ask here in case they're related: I have a Desktop.ini file (I've always had WinXP set to show system and hidden files) , which, read in notepa…

file names reversed
by Guest Charlene- 1 reply
WinXP recently has started showing filenames and folders in reverse order in dialogue boxes for saving or opening and when opening a folder. This is very irritating and wastes a lot of time. In order to counteract this every time I have to : 1) Go to the 'View menu' 2) Select 'Details' 3) Click 'Name' to force the list back into ascending alpha order. 4) Then continue my search for my file. Many applications are affected, too numerous to mention. This has irritated me enough now, that I have to do something about it - any suggestions? Can you control what XP adds to the "recent documents" and "recent folders" lists? I'm using filebox extender, and it is putting too much stuff in the list of recent folders. The author told me his doesn't do that, and to see if there is a parameter in WindowsXP that will let me stop if from adding folders to the menu each time I start an application. Can I control what gets put in the recent folders. By the way, History has never worked for me. Thanks Sarah

Messenger Service spam problems again

Hi everyone. Ive been having some issues with the windows firewall, and had to disable it. I do run sygate pro 5.5. After disabling the windows firewall I am getting the classic spam through windows messenger service. I have set up sygate to block ports 135, 137, 138, 139, 445, and 1025 for both TCP and UDP. I have gone to the shields up site https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 , and I pass all of the port tests. What can be causing the spam from the messenger service now? Is it a worm that is on my computer, because I dont understand how this can happen with all of the ports blocked. I do NOT want to simply disable the messenger service, that would be like clo…
