by Guest Brad1969- 0 replies

I used Hibernate to shut down my computer last night. This morning I went to reboot the system and it says "The last atttempt to restart the syetem from its previous location failed. Attempt to restart again?" Below that it has two options " Delete restoration data and proceed to the system boot menu" and Continue with restart" It will not allow me to select any of these. I have tried putting an xp disk in and it will not allow me to boot from there. I have also tried to get to the bios and it will not allow me in there either. I can put in the sony recovery disk but this will erase everything and start over with no recovery at all and rewrite the e…

I'm running XP SP2 with full updates, and for some reason today, messenger is locking up when I try to start a message, or type in an existing message window. I have to fir eup task manager and kill the process just to make it go away. I'm unable to find anything on google about the problem, and was wondering if anybody else has had the problem and if you've found a solution. As far as programs go, I'm running Office 2007, AVG Free, and nothing out of the ordinary. Thanks for any help!

by Guest johjones40- 1 reply

One moment fine, the next moment dysfunction. For unknown reasons I can no longer open the majority of Control Panel folders (32 out of 42). I get the following error message when I attempt to open these folders... "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I've run Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 (scanned for both spyware and viruses...found neither). I've run system restore (three different restore points) without success. I've run Yahoo! Anti- Spy (found nothing). I ran System Mechanic 7 (which reports "no problems"). I'm at a loss and up the creek without a pa…

I am hoping someone can help me. I have a client using Gallery software. He is using Gallery software on his local computer, pictures that can be viewed from his Website hosted at another site, are actually on his local computer. When people visit his website, they can click on a photos button and are redirected to his local computer where the pictures are. Gallery software allows him to login and upload pictures to the Gallery software. He recently changed to another ISP, now has a different IP address. I had the website host redirect to the correct IP address. People checking his website can see the pictures, but on his local computer, when he goes to his…

ntfs.sys missing or corrupt - Serious trouble
by Guest knucmo- 2 replies

Hello, my laptop was running fine until all of a sudden the message in the subject header came up when I tried to start it. I have read all this wonderful mystical advice about "yeah man, boot the recovery console and all else follows". I have the XP install CD. Exactly how does ONE reboot the recovery console? Please can somebody help I CANNOT afford to lose anything on that computer! P. S. If by "booting" the recovery console that means pressing "r", then this boots me into an infinite regress - it just keeps rebooting inspite of the XP cd being in the CD drive.

I re-installed my Cannoscan hardware (scanner) and software after removing it entirely from my system. The message I now get indicates that the mscms.dl is not found. What is this file and why do I get this message now as the scanner worked previously without any problem. Any help appreciated.

Chkdsk cancels on restart
by Guest Stewart- 0 replies

Whenever I set it from C: drive properties > tools > error checking, it says it will perform it on the next boot when it has exclusive partition access. OK so far. Then after rebooting it says it is beginning the Chkdsk, but a line immediately follows saying it is being cancelled. I tried a related solution from the Knowledge base by using the opposite of its instuctions for making an registry entry for canceling chkdsk. In other words I made sure it was set to the example it gave before cancelling. When that didn't work, I removed the value entry completely. I made sure I searched the registry to make sure I changed all duplicate entries the f…

When I boot the computer, it brings me to user profile page that displays correctly. When I chose a profile loads and the screen is blank other than the desktop wallpaper. No Task bar, start button, icons, nothing but wallpaper. The only way to access the system is through control-alt-delete and choose "new task". From new task I can access all programs, even can choose desktop and it shows the desktop icons that you can open. Does anyone have a cure?????????????????? I appreciate any help or understanding of how to cure this. Thank you

Hi, Which stable prog for cloning partition to partition using floppy ? What software would allow me a stable method of cloning a partition to a partition, SATA as source and ATA as destination ? It seems Norton Ghost 10 can be problematic on some PCs when dealing with SATA hardrives. My engineer screwed up my rebuild trying to use it to ghost to DVD. It didnt even start the transfer, he had to rebuild entire PC again as it wouldnt boot, ghost created its own boot drive. I am nervous to try it HD to HD as I always ghost..even having now bought Ghost12. Not sure if 12 allows creation of floppy, assumed it did but better not use it if wish for refund. I have alwa…

"Open with . . ." Menu
by Guest darkrats- 4 replies

I have disabled the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer using the command "regsvr32 /u shimgvw" and installed ACDSee as my default image viewer. However, a reference to the MS program still shows up in the "Open with....." right-click menu. Does anyone know, short of hunting through the Registry, to remove this unwanted item? Maybe this function is part of a tweaking utility someone has come across. There's nothing in TweakUI. Thanks.
