Hi I have just got a "high resolution" LCD monitor (a Samsung Synchmaster 244T since you ask) and its native resolution is fairly high (1920x1200). Although the monitor itself is something of a joy(!), a normal settings that resolution leaves my text way too small! I am experimenting with changing the font size. ( See: Display properties => Settings => Advanced => DPI Setting => Large Size [120DPI - 125% normal size] ) The problem is that many web pages look rather weird. (e.g. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/ has the search box in the wrong place...) Also in Windows Outlook(2003), the names of folders on the LH of the screen are not s…

I've got a winxp SP2 computer that does not have the option to remove the software under Add/Remove programs for a lot of the software that is installed. Some have a remove button, but maybe 2 programs out of the 20 that are installed. This happens when I am logged in as admin or any other user. Any idea how to fix this?

Compaq Presario overheating?
by Guest John- 3 replies

Hi, Sorry everyone I didn't post in the right forum, but rather than go looking for other places I thought I'd better stick to an easier to use forum. I am using a Compaq Presario M2000, with Windows XP Home Edition. The problem is that when I use my computer (for 5 minutes or so) the fan will start overheating. I have cleaned the fans recently, but I think it has something to do with the power supply. First, let me tell you that I have contacted Compaq "Help and Support" but the website was absolute crap. When I had a live chat with someone at the Help and Support centre, they redirected me to the Australian website, because I come from Australia.…

Flash player not being found AND linked new pages not opening
by Guest Commish- 2 replies

These 2 problems have just begun occurring a few days ago. Am running Win XP Home and IE6.0 SP2. Norton Internet Security 2008 is updated and reads everything is clean. Prob 1: When accessing any page calling for Flash, I'm being prompted to install Flash. I have since uninstalled and re-installed Flash 9 and Shockwave... If I go to macromedia's page, I'm told 9,0,47,0 is installed. The java site reads me as having the recommended installation V6 Update2. Prob 2: When clicking on any link which opens a new page, nothing happens... either from an email or a web page. Links to a page that replace my current page in IE work fine. I've de-activated No…

I cannot add phone numbers to my Outlook contacts. A box pops up and asks what the dial up setup is, however, when I try to choose a country all of the choices are blank. I went into Control Panel - Phone and Modem and the same problem arises - I am not able to choose a country. I am losing my mind on this. -- Many thanks - BD

I have a "vista" machine. I've had nothing but trouble with it. (Vista) I won't go over my complaints, but as far as I'm concerned, it stinks. I found a copy of XP on Ebay ( NEW Microsoft Windows XP Home, Full SP2!! w/ Legal COA) for $84.00. I had a copy that I believe I paid around $200 for in 2003 but I sold my older machine and threw in the disk because I got the new machine. My question is: The disk comes with "SP2" I wonder if the "SP2" is integrated. Does anyone know? thanks, marta

by Guest Steve- 3 replies

My desktop XP Pro machine is connected to the internet wirelessly (Netgear WG111v2) via my Linksys router. It is getting an IP through DHCP. I have another laptop XP Pro machine connected to the internet directly to the Linksys router via DHCP. Both can access the internet. Strangely, my laptop can ping my desktop. But my desktop cannot ping my laptop, or any other device on the router (I have another older machine on it). I would appreciate any help. Desktop Network Settings: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : GARCIA_VOSTRO Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Un…

Re: System Alert that keeps appearing in corner of screen Please can someone help us here as we are not really technically minded with computers. I know my way arounds roughly. We have a problem with a message that will not go away no matter what I seem to do. It says that we ahve too many anti virus/security programs running at the same time which we dont. We did have a trojan downloader attack us last night and everything went mad for a while but I downloaded Panda Titanium Antivirus 2005 as we had previousl used anothe Panda Security and it worked great. This one is working grewat to as it has already removed loads of crap for us. However the alert is …

Services in Management Console not working???
by Guest Nebulus- 0 replies
I'm running XP SP2 with all updates, and for some reason today, my messenger is locking up, and when I try to open the Services console in the Management Console, it won't open. I can also try Start > Run > and then type in "services.msc" and nothing happens. In the task manager, mmc.exe is running, and I have to kill it. However, if I run mmc.exe, the management console comes up, and I can load services.msc that way. This is very strange, and I'm wondering what might have happened - can it be that services or some other critical fiel has been corrupted? Please let me know if there's a way to debug this. I'd hate to reload windows over this.
