Re: IP Address will not renew. Help!! Damn Bootvis!! Wesley, I was directed to search this newsgroup for IP/RPC search by Steve Winograd from the Networking newsgroup. What I found here from you was the exact fix I needed for my issue of the ipconfig/renew error message I was getting: RPC server unavailable. I t5hink it was this hint that worked; Do the same for DHCP Client. This was the only one of the three jhints you highlighted here that was set to manual. After setting it to auto and starting it that the cable modem started up. Thank you so very much for your help. Bob "Wesley Vogel" wrote: > Try this. > > Open Services... > Sta…

removing the "downloading" software
by Guest Summercool- 2 replies

on both Win XP and Vista, sometimes I install some software and then all of a sudden, my IE will invoke a weird download plug in. So now, when I download other stuff, like a zip file, that annoying download program will pop up, and usually eat up a lot of resource. I tried go to Tools -> Manage Add-ons and then disabled a bunch of unknown or unwanted add-ons, but IE is still behaving the same way. Is there a method to remove the downloading app? (without uninstalling my other programs... as till now, which program caused it, i can't remember)

ISO image help needed
by Guest dfrog- 15 replies

A VERY newbie with ISO images, and so far failing to get my head around it all. Granddaughter plays EA Sims2 Pets on my computer (WINXP Home) and has to use the DVD each time to run it. So, thinking I would simplify & maybe speed things up a bit, (and learn something about Virtual Drives / ISO images at the same time) I created a Virtual CDRom using Daemon Tools, created what I thought was an ISO image using Nero6, but it came out as a .nrg Nero Disc Image which did not work having mounted it. So I then used MagicISO to convert this Nero .nrg to an ISO image and mounted it in Daemon Tools. All seemed Ok at this stage, but when I try to ru…

Mouse and Keyboard Lock Up
by Guest BigDogR- 1 reply

I have continually been fighting with a intermittant keyboard and mouse lockup. I changed RAM, ran spyware programs, and have reinstalled Windows and still have it. Last, I replaced the hard drive and reloaded ONLY Windows XP Pro and it now locks up after going through all of the windows upgrades. I only installed the software upgrades. I have looked up the setup program/bios and the PC does not lock up. I am currently in Safe Mode and it is not locking up, so far. Any suggestions. This is very frustrating. -- Many thanks - BD

Good Bye cruel world

M$ has so many little things in their OSs to keep you trapped in their product line - and also to keep you dumbed-down. I am no power user and no Einstein either but I like to tinker around. I like to know what's going on with my PC and to have control of it. Actually I DO think WinXP is pretty damn cool and I hope I can get by WITHOUT Vista for a long time. But I have a complete distribution of Slackware Linux 10.0 and I'm going to start figuring how to install it today. Also I'm going to get free from these zillion versions of MSDOS commands that don't work with each other (it says: wrong version of MSDOS . . . oops again). I'm going to learn to do…

Itunes - What is it's function?
by Guest George- 6 replies

Evidently I have an old version of Itunes (4.2.0.74) which came with my computer purchased three years ago. I am being prompted to download an updated version of the program which I can't seem to do properly. What is the function of Itunes? If I uninstall it, will I notice any change in my day to day system operation? I rarely use the audio on my computer - keep it turned off except for the occasional holiday e-mail. Any basic help to understand what Itunes is all about appreciated. -- George XP Home Edition SP2

Gentlemen I would like to know how good are these tools such as Windoze Optimizers, registry mechanics, and other performance tools in improving the efficiency of the WinXP performance. Generally the PC performance slows down meaning there are errors, and other issues that are bogging the computer. so my question is will these power tools help? TIA

False behaviour in notification area.
by Guest spamlet- 1 reply

Our XP Pro system has recently began to be plagued with false symbols and lack of symbols in the 'notification' area or the task bar. I have Process explorer set to run at startup, and it does so, but its symbol does not appear in the area as it always has done; similarly, the loud speaker symbol does not appear; and the wireless card symbol is crossed out with a message saying card not found even though it is working properly; more worryingly the (McAfee) antivirus shield symbol is crossed out saying on access scan is disabled even though it is not. I keep correcting these by disabling and re-enabling, but it always comes back at next log on. I have …

Have to diagnose a problem on a friends pc.......

Situation is this: one 11 year old and one 8 year old, running XP. Mum professes to be "hopeless" with computers. Sooooo.........what I can gather over the phone is a BSOD was encountered, I don't know what they were doing at the time, I don't know their install history, that's all I know :-( So they've restarted and encountered the "Windows did not shut down correctly....." screen. They've selected the option to "start Windows normally" whereupon I gather Windows tries to load before the BSOD appears again. They've tried the "start Windows normally" about six times with the same result which tells me Windows isn't happy about starting normally! What…
