SP3 sucess/Failure Stats
by Guest marx404- 11 replies

I have always been one who believes in a 6 month moratorium on major non-critical updates, I refer to this gestation period as the "Final Beta Stage" or "Guinea-Pig Phase" and calmly read about other's experiences whom rush to install the latest and greatest with all the vigor expected of any excited guinea-pig. From what I have collected is that SP3 will not be a necessity until updates that require it in the future. I have also seen many a post whereupon single PC owners have experienced slow-down due to inadequate system resources or hardware/software incompatibilities which were not present in SP2 but are not inherent in SP3. I have to laugh at the…

Regional and Language Settings
by Guest Simon Minder- 1 reply

Hi all, We are a company based in Switzerland, which has obviously the standards and formats set to "German (Switzerland)" in the Regional Options in the "Regional and Lanaguage Options" in the "Control Panel". However, I have a couple of users who run software which should report the dates (e.g. March) in English and not in German (März = March). I am aware, that I could change the standards and formats to "English (United States)". However, this has a negative effect in Excel, on the currency and dates in other applications. Does anybody know a workaround that the dates are displayed in English (e. g. March) and not in German? Kind regards, …

by Guest Steve1A- 10 replies

I need to make space on my C: drive, and am not interested at this point in moving Win XP to my D: drive. What can I safely delete from the WINDOWS and WINNT folders? After installation of WinXP, endless Win updates, and many IE7 Updates -- there are HUGE files now listed in: Windows\Installer, Windows\IE7Updates, Windows\$NTUninstall . . .,Windows\Assembly\NativeImages. My lord! What can I safely get rid of?

Malware remnants
by Guest Brian in Vegas- 14 replies

I recently did battle with some fake virus alert malware, and after successfully eradicating them, I find that my C: drive and my ZIP (D:) drive are no longer listed in the My Computer Folder. How do I get them back in there. I currently have created shortcuts on my desktop so I can still access them but can't seem to figure out how to restore them to the My Computer folder. Also, I still have a "VIRUS ALERT!" message displayed next to my clock in the taskbar on my desktop and have no idea how to get rid of that either. THe malware popups ahve ceased and everything else is working just fine. HELP! Thanks in advance, Brian

NTFS - Changing Read-Only attribute on folder
by Guest 5tulips- 5 replies

Windows XP SP2 NTFS I have a folder that has a subfolder with a title composed of 15 words. I didn't create it, but know what's in the sub folder (not much, and don't need it). It looks like the title of a web page. Inside the subfolder is four very small files (4 are .js) (1 is jpg). My computer got a complaint yesterday while I was doing a backup with a message that said the title was too long, either change the name or delete it. I could do neither. The folder's properties are checked for 'read only.' I went to Help and Support and it gives instructions, which I already know, and in most cases it always worked. I'm on NTFS, The change procedur…

dead keys
by Guest Bob- 0 replies

I am sending WM_KEYDOWN messages from one window to another. This works OK in English. In e.g. French, with the target window using a French keyboard, I can use VkKeyScanEx to find out what key to send for most characters, like for 'ç', wParam is VK_9. But VkKeyScanEx is useless for characters that are entered using a dead key, like 'â' is the sequence wParam = VK_OEM_6 (a dead key) followed by wParam = VK_A. Is there some other function that will tell me how to convert a character into the proper dead key sequence for a given keyboard? Thanks, Bob

Antivirus Solutions

We're currently running SAV Corporate 10 on our 2003/XP network and really don't want to shell out the $1500 for new 50 new licenses. Symantec has become increasing more bloated with each new version to the point where, if I wanted to upgrade to Endpoint Protection 11, I'd need to upgrade my workstations, and that's not going to happen any time soon. I've been looking into some alternate solutions and wanted some opinions on NOD32. AVComparatives.org shows it has a high detection rate and there seems to be a lot of praise coming from IT admins in various forums. I've installed the trial and like it so far. Uses much less resources than SAV. Anyone h…

MSVCR70.dll missing
by Guest David Schwartz- 5 replies
I uninstalled a number of programs from an old computer for my wife to use and now a number of programs, notably, Outlook Express gives me the error message that it can't find the file MSVCR70.dll. I did some research on the file and I know that it belongs in the Windows System32 folder. I have another computer networked to this one that has the file where it belongs. Can I just copy the file from this computer into her computer's System 32 folder and solve the problem or will that create another problem, like a registry problem that will make me wish I never woke up this morning or do I have to go through some anal Windows procedure to get the file wher…

SteadyState and WDP
by Guest Ray- 9 replies

I work in an elementary school and we are attempting to use SteadyState with Disk Protection enabled to protect the computers from the kids in the computer lab and Library. We have redirected the Desktop and My Documents folders to a network drive - but we have several applications that don't play nicely and store their data on the computer's hard drive and don't offer the option of changing the data location. Does anyone have any suggestions for some method of getting around this problem? If we can't find a solution, I'm afraid we're going to have to abort the whole process. 2 applications specifically are Type 2 Learn 3 by Sunburst Technology and KidPix …
