Write Cache Setting
by Guest Fev- 3 replies

Hi I would appreciate some advice on the following: I would like to turn off the Write cache setting on my harddrive, but am unable to do this through Device manager as this causes a Delayed Write error when I try to launch the applet. The settings on the Policies tab for the drive are "greyed" out. According to my current research in this group and generally on the Internet, I understand that I need to change the setting in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet \Services\Lanman server\Parameters What I am not sure about is which option in this key needs to be set to 0. Is it the default? I am running Win Xp Home SP3. Thanks Heather

The lower menu bar including where the start button is keeps "hanging" itself so that I can't access it. Normally it works when the computer starts but after having used a program or two it stops been accessable. It started a week ago, no installations were made, it just came it out of the blue. Any idea why and what I can do to fix it?

help! memory cleaner needed...
by Guest LunaMoon- 24 replies

Hi all, I am using Excel 2003 for some project. I am having 2GB C drive harddisk space. After a while, the Excel begins to be extremely slow in copy and paste... It takes about half an hour to copy and paste just a few cells... I've consulted people. It seems a memory problem. But I cannot close my windows and kill the processes, because I am running long-running (overnight) jobs... I cannot reboot either. Is there a way to clean the memory and let Excel 2003 clipboard function properly without rebooting or killing my 4 long-running processes? Thanks!

XP Reinstall

I have a Dell laptop that had Widows XP on it. It is out of warranty with Dell and I won't pay for fee based help. Dell did not give me a copy of XP or any type of recovery discs when I bought the laptop even though I paid for a license for the copy of XP that came on it which I think is rediculous. Anyway the hard drive failed and I replaced it. I built a desktop and installed XP Home on it awhile back. Does anyone know if I can use that disk to install XP on the laptop but use the product key for the copy that came on the Dell? A friend told my that he thinks that the product key is the license and any XP disk can be used for the installation. I emailed …

New HDD XP re installed then IE7 install causes boot error
by Guest Mikeymay- 2 replies

I have recently installed a new HDD and new DVD Rom drive. I installed a copy of XP Professional I receiced from Dell and then attempted to re install all the programs I had pre HDD failure. I seem to be having problems when I re install IE7 (which I am positive I had pre HDD failure). When I install I and then reboot I get a boot error saying a file call hal.dll is corrupt or missing. This is a very similar error to the one I got when my HDD failed except the file name was ntfskrnl.dll (I think). When this happens I have to re install XP and exverything works if I don't re install IE7. I would like to use IE7, but not sure how to resolve this is…

I remember it is a simple item, but despite my best attempts at using XP's Help feature I cannot find the information. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Ken

I'm doing cleanup on my old computer (XP SP3) and discovered some McAfee folders and files in Program Files. I've never used McAfee, and there's no McAfee program listed in Add/Remove Programs. Is it therefore safe to delete the folders and their files? The structure is this: McAfee (folder) Shared (folder) dunzip32.dll mccomctl.dll mccomctl.inf mghtml.exe mghtml.inf VSO (folder) Res09 (folder) Thank you! Jo-Anne

We get this message when run normally, and in Safe Mode. We have done the System File Checker, and have searched using Yahoo without success. We just removed the trojan that installs as a video codec, regained control of the machine, rans some updates, deleted temp files and were looking for a defrag to finish. Any suggestions are extremely appreciated. It is Windows XP Media Center SP2, and we have no recovery media. I'm hoping to avoid a recovery if at all possible. Thanks in advance, Dan

Modem removed - unavailable device
by Guest Martyn Tindall- 3 replies
I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad (R61i - UV1DSUK), that came with Vista and a "downgrade" to XP Pro SP2. I ran the downgrade, which seemed to go well. The first thing I did, having set it up, was to create a dial-up connection but, in 'Properties' (General tab), instead of the modem name it says: "Modem removed - unavailable device [COM1]", with a red cross. I've Googled this phrase and found other people with this problem, but no ready answer. "Modems" doesn't appear in Device Manager and 'Phone & Modem Options' won't autodetect the built-in modem. What can I do? TIA, -- Martyn Tindall Leeds, England, United Kingdom

Offsite backups-What program?
by Guest Bill-Hayward- 1 reply
I would like to do offsite backups for my small non-profit, about 25 employees. I already do backups to tape, and would like this to be an additional backup. I would like to buy a PC with a large hard drive, set it up at home, with a DSL connection and use it as a backup, across the internet. Are there programs available that would allow me to backup our computers, across the internet to our computer, at another location? I think it would be great if it worked like a normal backup program, I can set the time for it to start, and repeat regularly, and backup to a remote location. I know that you can get this service for a monthly fee, to backup to the…

Monitor doesn't come on after Standby
by Guest Jay- 6 replies

I use Standby all the time through out the day and over night. Then I hit the powerbutton and the computer is on in a matter of seconds with the programs I was using on the monitor ready to go. Just recently, I haven't installed anything or done anything new - changed no settings, - the computer comes on when I hit the powerbutton but the monitor never does. In the Power Options Properties I have: Turn off monitors, Turn off hard disks and System Standby all set to Never. And it's always been like that. Including up to yesterday when the Standby always turned on the monitor. Any ideas where I could start to get this fixed? I did go here: http://onec…

SATA Controller Card
by Guest Ugly Trick- 3 replies

I have but one IDE Header on my motherboard. I purchased a SATA Controller Card. It has one IDE Header and two SATA Headers. I connected a CD Writer to the IDE Header. Device Manager says that the device is working properly, but the computer has not identified it. I have the CD Writer set to "master". It is the only thing connected to that header. I will have to use that card or one similar to it. The card is plugged in to a regular PCI slot. Does anyone have any ideas as to why the computer has not recognized the writer? I am running Windows XP Home. I have 1 Gigabyte of memory. Ugly Trick.

STOP ERROR Message on XP Pro repair
by Guest Martin Ellis- 7 replies

Dell XPS 600 - Windows XP professional Following an infection with Antivirus 2008, and an unsuccsessful removal attempt, the PC stalled at the desktop walllpaper with no icons and no taskbar displayed. Same in safe mode. Task manager could be made to appear and logging on/off was possible, but other than that, no response. Booting from the XP Pro CD and choosing to repair an existing installation, I get the following message part way through setup; DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATION The best the knowledge base could come up with was renaming a file (in Windows\system32\drivers) called raspppoe.sys to raspppoe.sy_ but that seems t…

Reclaiming My Documents
by Guest TC- 6 replies

I'm fed up with programs that put application data in My Documents. I keep my files extremely well organized. All my data is stored in My Documents in a folder structure that makes sense to me. I've used Tweak UI to move "My Music", "My Pictures", and other Windows folders out of My Documents and into the subfolder where I want them. I'm very happy with my organization, and I don't want anything to disrupt it. That's why it makes me mad when I install a new program and it creates its own folder under My Documents. Until recently, I've managed to keep My Documents fairly pure by reconfiguring, hacking, or uninstalling programs that abuse it. Unfortunately, I'v…

Where's the saved files from deleted users
by Guest Bill- 19 replies

A fellow board member set up our community theater's XP pro with several other board members as users. When I realized that other less experienced users often left files on their desktop that should be shared I decided to delete all users so we all logged into the same desktop. I was offered an option to save their files which I choose. I assumed all desktop files would be available on the new common desktop but an mdb I knew existed was not visible. I did an Explorer search and found the file listed at C/documents and setting/Bill Hepburn/desktop/*.mdb but when I used Explorer to find the file, there was no Bill Hepburn (one of the users I deleted) fol…
