XP just stops responding
by Guest Greg Hines- 5 replies

Hi Everyone, Dell Dimension 3100 with XP Prof. SP2 with all current updates. Several times a day when you want to browse a local or network drive or any program wants to do the same (eg: file open or file save) the browsing or reading of the drive information just freezes for all drives (local and network). Other programs will run as long as they don't have to read any drive content such as file open. After 1 - 2 minutes everything returns to normal. Done the following:- Chkdsk on all drives Run Ad-aware and Spybot for Malware Run a complete Virus Scan using avast and nod32 Uncheck all the items under Performance Options | Visual Effects Instal…

Display options
by Guest Penny- 14 replies

I've got a user who was my last user using windows 2000 SP4. She finally let me upgrade her to Windows XP. This user has the most unique desktop settings I've ever seen she likes everything VERY LARGE. Anyways I'm trying to mimic her display settings in XP SP2 to be just like the settings in her previous W2K machine and I'm falling short. I've narrowed down to 1 thing, her theme. Her W2K theme was windows classic (extra large). That's not an available scheme in XP. In the display settings there's fewer choices, but the choice to find more themes on line only gets me to the good ole "We're sorry we are unable to service your request" and searchin…

Hi I have been backing and restoring my disk partitions using disk imaging utilities. Is there a way to check the integrity of the whole disk including the partitions? Chkdks only checks within a partition as far as I can tell and is therefore not good enough. Thanks Regards

Why so many My Docs?
by Guest Joan- 5 replies
Thanks to this ng I have found solutions and answers to many questions across time, it is a great resource . Here are a few more questions: - If I am the sole user and administrator( owner) of my XP SPF2 desktop computer, can I get rid of the various user folders (All Users, Default user, Owner)? Delete them? Are there any risks in doing so? - Does the answer apply also to XP Professional Media Center, which I have in my laptop? - How can I make My Computer be expanded to show all drives when I open Windows Explorer? Thanks, Joan

HOWTO: Install XP SP2, without the anger.
by Guest John- 5 replies

I have seen many complaints (and much ranting) about why SP2 sucks royally. Guys, I see your point, but, I thought I'd better put a "how to" post on the USENET community, just in case someone else has trouble. ********************** 1 > Get the service pack. Download it at: http://www.windowsupdate.com OR http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx Save it to a location such as the desktop or my documents. 2 > Turn off or disable your antivirus software. On AVG Free you can do this by right clicking on the AVG Free Edition icon on the taskbar, and click on "Quit AVG Control Center". I currently do not have instructions for how …

I have the following problem. I have a network share connected to U: If I do a global Windows desktop search, it picks up the files on my network share. However, if I browse to drive U: and then do CTRL/F to initiate a search of U:, Windows desktop search says that "U:\" is not indexed. Is this about? Is there anything I can do? Thanks

DVD+R DL burned in Vista, unreadable in Vista, readable in XP!
by Guest hjacobson- 6 replies
The most curious thing; using Vista Ultimate I burned a 6GB file to a DVD+R DL. In Vista's 'Burn a Disc' 'Prepare this blank disc' window I chose 'Mastered - Readable on all computers and some CD/DVD players. Requires you to write all files at once, and individual files can't be erased afterwards.' The burn appeared to complete successfully. On my Vista computer I re-insert the disc. The directory displays. In attempting to drag the file to a folder on the HDD the process hangs. In the Command Prompt window running a comp returns 'Can't read file'. My XP computer has no problem reading the file! A comp on the XP computer indicates the file was burned…

Task Manager PF Usage makes no sense
by Guest Martin X.- 2 replies
FYI I decided to really dig into Task Manager today and found a few things that don't make a lot of sense. I did a test by starting a Virtual PC, which increased the PF Usage by pretty much the same amount as the decrease in Physical Memory > Available (~539 MB). I had set up the VPC for 510 MB of RAM, so that's pretty close to the 533 number, which makes sense. So if physical memory is decreased by an appropriate amount for a new process, why is PF Usage also increased by roughly that same amount? This is totally contradictory behavior and makes no sense to me. Based on my findings, I say that PF Usage does not actually indicate page file usage,…
