How can I keep Windows Firewall on AND allow a second computer access to a share I create on the firewalled computer? When I turn off the firewall, the share works fine. Once I turn it on, the share is disconnected. I'm using the share as a location for a backup image of the second computer.

Restore event on external drive
by Guest General Mailbox- 6 replies

Greetings. Now that I have a full system restoration program, I was wondering if the external drive files would be affected. The reason I'm asking is my concern of files no longer being identified as when I use System Restore feature to an earlier point. Since System Restore is monitoring all hard drives, plus external drive, would restoring to an earlier time also affect the external drive's files? If so, I would think a full system restore would also not identify files created after that point. I'm reluctant to keep my external drive on to find out. Thank you. Rgds, Kevin

Auto Locking after Auto Login?
by Guest vidguide@gmail.com- 3 replies

Hi, I've come across an odd situation. We have a number of systems that are stand-alone machines running windows XP. We use the reg keys under Winlogon to set the systems to auto logon. On some sites, they actually log into a domain, others not. One of the machines, on a domain site, auto-logs in fine, displays the desktop and icons for about 2 seconds, and then instantly goes to "this computer is locked, only the admin/user can unlock it.. etc" If this machined does NOT log into the domain, it works fine. if I manually log into the domain, it does not do it. only when it auto logs into the domain. I have 3 other machines on that site however, all happily able…

Correct previous post

I just posted "Why so many My Docs?" but I meant to write Why so many user folders. I apologize for the error. Below's the previous post in case it gets lost. Thanks to this ng I have found solutions and answers to many questions across time, it is a great resource . Here are a few more questions: - If I am the sole user and administrator( owner) of my XP SPF2 desktop, can I get rid of the various user folders (All Users, Default user, Owner)? Delete them? Are there any risks in doing so? I realize I must check them first to make sure no important data is erased. - Does the answer apply also to XP Professional Media Center, which I have in my lapto…

Event ID 1007, Source: Userenv, Type: Error Windows cannot determine the associated site for this computer. (The RPC server is unavailable. ). Group Policy processing aborted. I get this error both the System and Users when any user logs onto the machine and every hour or so after. I am not on a domain and I have access to this computer using remote desktop from other machines. I have enabled/started every service on the machine to try to end the error but it persists. I have Internet access and everything seems to work alright as far as that and remote desktop etc. is concerned. So I'm not sure why I get the error. I've done allot of Goggling over …

Now I get the message. click validate, get the message that Windows is already validated and then get logged off and loops right back to windows needs validated. Help!

Upgrading motherboard
by Guest Linx- 3 replies

I've seen some replies on this, but I'd just like to have some points clarified. I intend to upgrade the mobo and other associated components on my PC thats running XP SP2. However, I only have a CD with SP1a (its about 3.5 years old), so I can't run the procedure detailed in KB 824125 without the "windows cannot continue with this process..." message appearing when I have to prepare the HDD for transfer onto the new machine. Should I run one of the so-called slipstreaming processes? I'd prefer not to lose all my currently installed programs out of the registry (a lot of games and other software) in the process. Any help would be much appreciated.

by Guest J Srinivas- 3 replies

It is known to all that in Stand by mode.. Every thing except RAM turns off. So In this a kepboard or mouse activates system again. Where as in Hiberbate mode Every thing including RAM gets saved to the Hard Disk. And the system Shuts Down. My question is When the system is restarted in hibernate mode.. What happens to the Saved content. Will the system erases all the saved content it saved in the process. If not where it is stored. Can be deleted manually.

Explorer Search problem
by Guest mc- 6 replies
Starting a few days ago whenever I initiate a search, nothing happens except returning to the windows explorer window with no apparent disk activity, and I can proceed onto other things. I went into task manager to take a look, under the application tab explorer is shown to be running fine, but under the process tab it is shown to be taking up 50% of the CPU. The only way to return to normal is to reboot. Anyone has any idea how to fix it? I am running XP sp2.

by Guest snoopy07- 4 replies

I have BT broadband using a Voyager 2091 router. Whilst I am able to comnnect to the internet OK the internet connection icon no longer appears in the control panel or down on the notification area. It used to dissapear periodically but generally came back if the router was reset. It now will not appear at all so I cannot tell what speed I am connected or any properties etc. My local area connection icon to the router appears OK. Anybody got any clues (I have already removed BT Desktop help)

Sharing error
by Guest Kyle Aumell- 1 reply

I seem to have lost my ability to share folders. Any file or folder that I try and share out results in a stop & the following error message: "An error occurred while trying to share <file or folder name>. The data is invalid. The shared resource was not created at this time." I have tried stopping and starting the "server" service, to no avail. Any advice, short of re-installing the OS, is much obliged. Thanks Kyle

Acronis / backup question
by Guest Vic- 6 replies

I've read a lot about the virtues of Acronis on this newsgroup. However, people continually talk about IMAGING as a backup. I don't want to do that. Can Acronis use a completely different size hard drive to simply backup selected files/directories (not a cluster by cluster clone)?
