Data Recovery
by Guest gus- 3 replies
I have a WinXP laptop with a failing hard disk. On the laptop, I went to the recovery console and attempted to chkdsk the dsk, but the chkdsk stopped at 25% with unrecoverable errors. I removed the disk and installed on another WinXP system using a USB storage adapter. On that system I can "see" the disk in Windows Explorer as the I: disk, but I cannot cd to it or execute commands against it. I have not reinstalled Windows on the disk or otherwise reformatted it. My objective now is to recover as much of the disk files/content as possible. Can someone tell me the steps to attempt this, or point me to a link describing the diagnostic steps and/or utilities…

Standby, Win XP Home
by Guest R T- 4 replies

Standby sometimes works, other times fails at varying lengths of time. I turn off programs that might startle system into action, put cable modem on standby, turn screesaver to "none", exit time synchronizer, etc. I have the AMD "cool 'n' quite' service set up - it seems to have little if any effect, but should that be removed? Any suggestions most welcome. -- R T address anti-spammed

Avoiding confirmation prompt for opening pages of Trusted sites in IntExp?
by Guest Tobias Merler- 0 replies

I added a domain (sourceforge.net) to the list of trusted sites in my IntExp 6.x under WinXP. Since I defined this always a confirmation window pops up whenever I visit a sourceforge site. It asks me to allow opening the web page. Hey, if I trust this site I - of cause - allow the loading of web pages from that domain. So what should this mess ? How can I avoid this popup window? WinXP won't boot up :(
by Guest Fox13- 1 reply

I got the blue screen of death and when I tried rebooting, I got a message saying it couldn't find the Windows/System32/Config/System file and to use the WinXP disc to repair it. So I tried that, but then it tells me there's no HDD detected. I ran a Linux LiveCD and I was able to access the HDD with that, so I know it's not a physical connection problem. What do I do?

Can not read contents of burned DVD
by Guest jpics- 6 replies

Hi all, having a problem here. My desktop pc which is fully up to date with sp2, seems to be burning DVDs just fine, however after the disk ejects after burning and I go to browse it (I am burning my photos) it is showing as basically blank. I have tried DVD-r, +r and RW's...all the same result. I use Sonic Record Now 7.22. I know it's burning fine because I can throw the DVDs in my laptop and browse them fine there, however on my desktop, which burned the disc, no go. I can incidentally see the contents of burned CDs on this machine though. Just not DVDs. Any ideas why I am unable to view the burned contents on my desktop? This is making me loopy! Thanks…

How to run CHKDSK effectively ?
by Guest Mr. Low- 6 replies

Dear Sir, I need to use other applications while running Check Disk. Usually I go to Start > Run > Type in CHKDK and click OK. The system always check the drive C, but there is a Warninbg Message : F Parameter not stated, CHKDSK is runnning on Read Only Mode. May I know what this mean ? What should be the correct command to type in if I wish that the error detected are fixed ? Of course the best way of checking and fixing disk error is using the facility at My Computer where al;l other applications are not running. Thanks Low -- A36B58K641

I have a Temp folder at C:\Documents and Settings\{My Account Name}\Local Settings\ which is 214 MG on size. If I run Disk Cleanup, it doesn't see this Temp folder. Am I safe to delete it? Will Windows re-build it? (I'm also running Off-line files, but I gather those files are in C:\Windows\CSC\) Thanks

Each and every time that I click yes, I get the validation window which tells me that I have already validated click on yes an I exit from the validation page. Now I am at 30 days and the system asks the question, tells me that we are validated, but just logs me off and comes back to, you need to validate. And continues to loop. Please, someone help. Frank

Software to copy multiple profiles
by Guest Help- 2 replies
Is there any software out there that will copy all of the local profiles on a windows xp machine and allow you to transfer them to another computer? I don't necessarily need all of the settings, just the main stuff like desktop, favorites, my documents and printers? This is so that when a computer is changed out and there is 30 different profiles on a computer, they don't need to log in first and then have the files transferred over manually.

Windows XP Pro upgrade strategy/advice needed
by Guest Dave- 2 replies
Hi, Our organization (<100 employees) is looking to upgrade all PCs that are not XP pro to, well, XP Pro. All of eth above PC OS'es are eligible for the upgrade and meet minimum system requirements. What would be the best (cheapest) way to obtain 17 user licenses? i.e. if volume licensing is recommended, what is the process, and where to buy? or if purchasing individual Upgrade versions is cheaper, can someone give me links to stores that have those at lowest price? Thanks, Dave
