2nd hard drive format question
by Guest Ed Mc- 5 replies

I have installed a 2nd (slave) hard drive, but, its formatted FAT32. If I right click on the drive in Disk Management I don't have an "initialize" option. Just "properties", or, delete partition. How do I turn it into NTFS? I'm assuming I need to do this for the drive to show up in My Computer. It does show up in BIOS etc. Thank you all. -- Semper Fi

reinstalled WinXP does not recognize ORIGINAL USERS, Software & Do
by Guest Mcdajeff- 2 replies
I had to reinstall WINXP (Home Edition) and the original USERS and software do not come up on the screen. I know the USERS are there, because they can be found under My Computer, C, Documents & Settings, ALL USERS. The software seems to be there as well, but I can't get all of this set up so that it can be recalled. I've tried to reinstall my antivirus software, and I can't get it to stick either. Any input on how I can get WINXP to recognize the ORIGNIAL USERS, Software and Documents would be most appreciated, as I am absolutely stumped. Thanks.

Re: Explorer.exe does not load upon startup/login

Re: Explorer.exe does not load upon startup/login My school district has same setup and problems as you. Started happening after we installed NetOps on our labs and removed Altiris Vision 5.0 (curious if you have similar applications running.) We have multiple labs, at multiple school sites on multiple hardware having the same explorer error as what is listed here. Some labs have SP2 and couple have SP3 (but both have same issue, so I don't think it's Service Pack related) Think it may be NetOps on my lab that messed it up, and we also run Deep Freeze on all these PC's to prevent changes by the students. What we've noticed so far is that if you login…

Unable to access Desktop following Windows Udate
by Guest CWS666- 1 reply

Yesterday I saw the yellow Windows shield in my bottom tolbar which prompted me to download the latest Security updates. I have Windows XP SP3. When the download was finished I was prompted to restart my PC which I did. After the PC finished loading up I was left with a blank desktop and no bottom toolbar (no Start button) and, therefore, unable to access anything. I restarted in safe mode and accessed System Restore and went back, first 1 day and then 2 days without success - still no desktop. I am able to access Windows Task Manager, and, using the File drop down menu was eventually able to acces the internet. I can access my e-mail via webmail. C…

Network computers not visible
by Guest Ken- 1 reply

XP Pro SP2 When viewing "Entire Network|Microsoft Windows Network|MSHOME" in My Computer, from either of the two computers on my simple network, I can't see the other computer. From my desktop, only that computer itself shows up when MSHOME is expanded. The laptop does not appear. From the laptop, only the desktop shows up when MSHOME is expanded. In other words, the laptop does not show up as a member of MSHOME on either computer. The desktop shows up as a member on both computers. Both computers are connected by cable to a Belkin router. They can ping each others, and I can transfer files from one to another. (And yes, both are indeed members …

Bad Product Key - Windows 2000
by Guest DJH- 7 replies
I am trying to reinstall Windows 2000 on a PC after having to replace the hard drive. I have the CD that came direct from Microsoft many years ago and a Product Key sticker on the envelope. In the setup, after entering the type of keyboard, etc. it asks for the product key. It does not accept the one that I enter. Is there any way to tell from the key if I have the correct envelope and that it is indeed for Windows 2000? What else could be wrong? How can I get a valid key? -- DJH -- DJH

Ok so I finally got my computer fixed. But it has been set back to the factory settings, or something. And now everything on it is huge. Like the windows at the bottom, the programs in the menu, etc. And when I talk on a messenger program, I can't even see my friends lists because everything is so big. Can someone help, and tell me how I can make everything smaller again.

Dealing with two accounts on one machine
by Guest Charlie- 1 reply
This is sort of a generic question. The OS is XP Pro with SP3. We have two user accounts setup. Some features, applications etc. are separate on one account compare to the other. As a simple example each of us has different desk tops and we use different operating systems. But when I decided that my desk top was too cluttered and deleted a bunch of short cuts that were rarely being used, I got a comment from the other account holder that the short cuts had been removed from her desk top. While this is a non problem, it does raise a question. Where can I find a list of those features etc. that are common to all users and which ones are individual…

NUVTwain.dll is missing
by Guest Millie- 2 replies
I use Windows XP and Photoshop CS. I recently launched Photoshop CS and received an error message that the NUVTwain.dll was missing and that reinstalling the software might resolve the problem. I did, and it didn't. However, once I manage to get rid of the message I seem to be able to use Photoshop as normal. Then I reinstalled my scanner software and drivers and received the same error message. When I try to scan, the message pops up again. And again when I get rid of the message I can scan a document into Photoshop. Can anyone tell me why I lost this dll, what it does and how I can reinstall it? Thanks -- Millie

TIA

Wrong Icons and File Type
by Guest Kieron Capehorn- 0 replies

The file types of media files on my PC have got mixed up. Most media files on my PC now have the Winamp filetype as their icon in Windows Explorer, even though they do not open in Winamp when you double click on them by default. In addition, in the 'File Type' section of Explorer, all of these files are listed as 'Winamp Media File', even though they are associated with other programs, such as WMP9 and flvPlayer. How can I put this right? Thanks

Wi-Fi & LAN network problem
by Guest Ganz Doof- 2 replies
My XP laptop has suddenly developed a problem whereby it cannot connect either to an active Wi-Fi hotspot or to a LAN internet connection. The Network Connections window shows "Limited or No Connectivity" although other computers work just fine when connected to the same LAN cable and in the same room with Wi-Fi enabled. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix the problem? Also, the computer has become very sluggish and takes a long time to start and shut down of late. I ran CCleaner, but that did not seem to help. Any other ideas besides defragging? Thanks

Question about DVI and dual monitors
by Guest Gregg Hill- 6 replies
Hello! I want to have two identical Acer AL1917 LCD displays set up as their own views, and not just a clone. I bought an AGP card with one DVI and one VGA connector, and when I hook up the displays, the one connected to the VGA output is FAR less bright than the DVI one, even at max contrast and brightness. Backgrounds are grey, menu bars are brown instead of grey, etc. I now want to hook up both to DVI, and I have Googled a little bit and found references to DVI splitter cables to use with dual monitors. Which is better, using one DVI output split into two DVI, or buy a dual-DVI card? Can a dual-display setup work off of one DVI that is split, and s…

Dell Inspiron B130 - 1.5 Ghz Celeron - Windows xp Pro (all updates applied) I have a SanDisk Imagemate CFII card reader. EVERYTIME I connect to the USB port Windows launches intothe "Found New Hardware" routine. It tells me it is copying the driver to Windows/System32 folder. Yet, if I disconnect and re-connect the unit the "Found Neew Hardware" wizard launches again. What's the problem/fix? Thanks

When booting up, I receive the following error message "file System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys is missing or corrupted; reload XP CD-ROM and type 'r' at que when booting your Windows XP based computer". Since I don't have an XP CD-ROM, and I got my computer second hand, is there a way I can fix this problem without having to purchase a second Windows XP. sem
