Hi, My computer (Dell Optiplex w/ XP home SP2) is changing my ip address on a daily basis. I have Bellsouth DSL and have had to renew and reset the correct pasword through the Bellsouth tool application after I close my Panda security software. This has been going on for a week or so. I have a netgear router with a wireless to a 2nd computer which is not affected. Any ideas how I can correct and stop the address change?

My Laptop got the blue screen of death doing bootup right after the windows XP splash screen. I did everything to repair the installation but it didn't work. i figure i'd do a parallel installation and then backup my data and reformatt the hard drive and start fresh. After i performed the Parallel installation, I am not able to access all the folders or files from the user of the original installation. some folder let me access but other gave me error that it is not accessible; access denied error. When I right click on the user folder and choose properties, the Security tab is missing, that true on all of the folder when I boot into the parallel …

adding a network printer
by Guest JanAdam- 4 replies

I have just connected my brand new PC (Win XP pro with all current updates) to my small home network. My problem is that the new PC has a problem with printing to a network printer, HP 3055 all in one, connected directly to a router via an Ethernet cable. Other two computers on the network print to this printer OK. On the new PC I have tried to add the printer using a window wizard. My HP printer driver was not listed there, so I run Windows update (perhaps I should have selected ‘have disc’ instead). Anyhow, after the update my printer showed up on the list. I have added it and set as a default. It shows on the list of available printers as a default, a…

Access Denied?!
by Guest John- 7 replies

Hi, I am using Windows XP SP2 (stupid edition), and suddenly, it thinks I am a total stranger. If I click on one folder it will say "Access is denied". This happens with every entire folder on this damned system. I have done NOTHING to it except installed a program - which I checked with AVG Free, mind you. File Permissions are correct because they have never changed. I followed "Microsucks" instructions to set permissions and it don't do nothing. The point that "a computer is only as worthy as it's user", is true, but I have no control over my computer. Look, basically, it could be my fault. I think it is, but I don't know what to do. Does a…

registry cleaner screwing up IE7
by Guest John- 16 replies

Hi, I just installed Abexo Registry Cleaner Free, and cleaned up my registry. My computer is faster (very faster), however, it just chewed up IE's a... I'd better not say it. I just reset my browser and it is so annoying. It thinks I'm with AAPT when we are with a different ISP. It still connects to the internet (thank god), but I want to make sure that it didn't mess about with my computer. Is there anyone who had this before? Thank's in advance. -- A story of success always has a beginning.

File explorer doesn't show drive letters for certain folders
by Guest eric_mccowan- 2 replies
When I do a search using XP's search feature , say for files over 50 mbs (or whatever lenght), it brings up several folders that does not have a drive letter associated with it. For example, I have one folder on there that instead of listing it as c:\vbshowcase\file.txt it lists it as vbshowcase\file.txt . I can right click on the file name and 'open containing folder' and it displays. However, I have no idea where these files are located on the hard drive. I've manually went through the drive using windows explorer, but I can't see it. I've drive searching through dos, but still can't find it. I didn't see an option to upload an image, so I posted a…

Shared Printer issues
by Guest Ben Bazian- 0 replies

I posted this on the print_fax forum but have gotten no replies so I will try here. Have two systems doing the same thing. Dell Optiplex computers running XP Professional SP2 with all the latest patches. HP 1018 printer connected via USB and shared. Printer will work for a while and then stop printing. If you stop and restart the spooler the print jobs start again. There is nothing of interest in the Event Viewer when this happens. Any ideas are appreciated.

updates going on different drive
by Guest Mark G.- 2 replies

Just reinstalled my OS, Win XP Pro, and now going through all of the updates. Anyhow, I have 4 SATA hard drives on my computer with windows on my Raptor 74gig drive. Anyhow, when these updates install, they are putting folders on another drive. the folder names are an alphanumeric string like '1f4af99a8906011f191860569e7bfa47'. Not sure why it is putting them on this drive rather than the 'C' drive as the drive it is putting them on is my 'F' drive (another SATA 250gig drive). There is plenty of room on the Raptor drive yet. The updates are installing fine, it is just dumping this old data there. Can't I just delete these folders with the files within once…

Home doesn't see Pro
by Guest JMF- 2 replies

I've got XP Home Edition on my laptop and XP Pro on my desktop. On my home LAN, I put them in the same workgroup, etc. XP Pro "sees" the XP Home computer in My Network Places, but XP Home doesn't see the XP Pro machine. I can't figure out what I can do to get this working. In the "early days" of this home LAN, the laptop *would* see the XP Pro sporadically, it almost seemed random. Then finally it stopped seeing the XP Pro machine altogether. Here are some more facts: there is also yet another laptop on this little LAN, which is running Win2K Pro. He sees *everybody* and *everybody* sees him! So somehow, some way, there must be some kind of pro…
