IE7 video problem
by Guest perfectvelvet- 1 reply

Internet Explorer 7 used to work fine, then something happened and now I have an issue with playing videos. I can't make a connection as to what type of videos won't play, but here's what happens. Youtube and Google videos work fine. However, Yahoo's music videos do not. It seems like any video that opens in a new window does not work, and it crashes IE all together. This is the error signature I get: AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16512 ModName: quartz.dll ModVer: 6.5.2600.2749 Offset: 0003155d Specs: O/S: Windows Home Edition for XP - Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_grd.070227-2254 : Service Pack 2) Internet Explorer 7 (Versi…

Java offline download on dialup - 4 Hrs Normal?
by Guest George- 4 replies

I've tried to read all the pertinent questions and answers regarding updating with the latest Java. What I've done is uninstall all JRE versions at Add/Remove Programs in Controll Panel. Then deleted C:/Program Files/Java folder. When I go to the Java site to download the offline installation version for jre 1.6.0_02 to save to the desktop, the File Download window shows 4 hours to download 13.8MB. Earlier today, an interruption at the two and a half mark has me trying the download again. Right now I'm at 12% with 3:29 to go. Lord Have Mercy. Is this speed within the usual timeframe for a dialup download of Java? If so, what if anything can be done…

Windows Search not working
by Guest Lostguy- 4 replies

Hello. I have Windows XP SP2 on an Acer laptop. When I click on Start>Search>For Files or Folders, it comes up to the Windows Explorer window, but the left side vertical bar (the one that used to ask what type of file I wanted to search for) is blank. The right side window is also blank. So, it is just the top toolbars and 2 blank windows below that. This has been not working for months. I haven't installed anything new, but it could have been caused by my running a registry cleaner. Any ideas on how to restore Search? I appreciate your help! VR/ LostGuy

Missing program/Unregistered file format ??
by Guest Josh- 7 replies

Okay so here is the thing. Recently I discovered that all of my .txt documents (Notepad documents), their icons have been changed to a folded page with the original logo in the middle. And also the description for the document is no longer Notepad Document but it is now "TXT file" And Notepad is no longer an option when creating a new file (Right Click in a folder > New) But even though all of this is happening, I am still able to open and edit TXT files on my computer with notepad as if nothing has gone wrong with it. this didnt bother me at first but now it's interfering with me installing certain programs because they cannot find the notepad.exe…

.dll .exe .lnk files
by Guest tbrinsonsr- 2 replies

I have some how eliminated the abiliyt to open most of the Microsoft programs such as Word , Access, Exxcel, & soforth. The Icons are there but when I click on them I get the message Windows cannot open this file. File: Windows Word.lnk To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it. Windows can go online to look for it, or you can manually select from a list on your computer. Now I have tried every program on that list and none of them will work. I'm sure this is an easy fix for some one who is very computer savy however I know just enough to be dangerous. So if anyone can help I would really appreciate the input. Please post…

File Names with (2) suffix
by Guest Charlie''s Word VBA questions- 0 replies

I have many folders and files with a (2) suffix as in \Program Files\Microsoft Office(2) and \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared(2). Please help me to understand what these are. There are also the "same" folders without the suffix. I assume that the folders and files with the (2) suffix are duplicates. About two years ago, I did a system restore and that's when I first noticed them. In reviewing them a few days ago, I noted that none of them have been modified or, as far as I know, even accessed. If these are, in fact, copies of folders and files before the system restore, and given that I don't want to go back to them, can I delete them …

Deleting a file in c:\windows\prefetch
by Guest Stuart C- 2 replies

I have been experiencing problems with my PC getting to 100% CPU usage and then freezing. I have managed to find out through a Virus scan than my PC will freeze when it gets to Delete MSACCESS.EXE.12E7C9F9.pf which is located in c:\windows\Prefetch. I have reinstalled Office, run error checks, detect & repair etc to no avail. I suspect I need to delete this file. However when i place my cursor over the file to delete my PC freezes again. Other files in this directory can be deleted apart from this one. I have two questions which i would appreciate any assistance on: 1. Is there another way I can delete this file. 2. Can files in c:\windows\Prefetch b…

Got a Seagate "FreeAgent Pro" 750GB external drive, tried to connect it to existing eSATA port (have been using a WD 500GB in PowerSpec enclosure with no problems). Couldn't find the Seagate by doing "Rescan Disks" in Computer Management, so I restart. Here I get a bit fuzzy. I think I had to do this twice, and cold-booted second time. Both times it went to a blue screen and ran some diagnostics by me too quickly to really read, much less ponder or take notes. It ended up with doing a chkdsk complete scan (couple of hours -- I went and made dinner). It appears to have found some of the pre-loaded files to be bad, at least they were empty/altered/ab…
