will putting xp on hdd with vista help me?
by Guest chesterboy- 1 reply

Hi, Problem - After upgrading to new computer (with vista pre-installed), I cannot get our satellite broadband connection going because the modem is not compatible with vista! Several frustrating calls to our large-multinational ISP were useless. No support. I have been told to use the old computer (with XP on it ) as a gateway. Cant do that because the HDD is corrupted or damaged. I have my original XP cd, so my question is can i install xp onto the new computer alongside Vista and get the internet connection going? The modem is a DW4000 connected by USB. Any help would be great thanks.

Registry Creation problems
by Guest royzlife@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hi, When I create any string registry entry (REG_SZ) manually , does it gets created with NULL value? Because when the same registry key is created through InstallShield(installation of .msi), I find the binary value data for the key is 0 0 0 0. When created manually, its binary value data is 0 0 0 0 | 0 0 0 0. Why is this difference coming? The real problem crops up when I retrieve the value from registry and check if it contains "" i.e. nothing. When created manually, this check is working fine but when created while installation of .msi, this check is failing. It will be helpful if any one can throw a light on this anomaly.

Microsoft Word having trouble displaying .doc
by Guest Cloudchaser the Red Wolf furry- 2 replies

Hi! :-) Microsoft Word is having trouble displaying .doc files that are supposed to have color and/or images. For example, poems & stories listed in this gallery, most if not all of which have embedded images (caution, dark red around the border means adult content) http://www.furaffinity.net/gallery/vixyyfox/ Of one, the author told me "It should have a deep red background to the point of almost black, and the type is in white" but that doesn't happen. Of all of them, when I try to open one, I get "unable to load graphics filter. continue with document conversion?" followed by what appears to be a blank page if I select yes and I have to high…

folder entirely unreadable
by Guest Adrian Bailey- 3 replies

My laptop (using Windows XP) got infected a few months ago and I haven't been using it. I've just got round to disinfecting it, using HijackThis and AVG, and it seemed to be clear. Today when I turned it on, it said I should check the disks for consistency. Immediately it started giving "folder entirely unreadable" messages and removing the contents of what are in fact photos of our baby. I switched the machine off and back on again without doing the consistency test. When I open the two folders that have been emptied, a message tells me the drive (D:) is unformatted and asks me whether I want to reformat it. The drive and the (other) folders seem actually to b…

Exact memory requirement
by Guest Ramesh- 1 reply
Hi, Is there a way to find out how much of memory is actually being used at any point in time? Does the commit number in task manager indicate the memory used? The purpose is to determine the amount of memory required in my PC. I already have 512MB (2 x 256) but i find the commit figure most of the time around 650MB (at times reaching 750MB) and slows down the system tremendously. I need to decide whether to replace a 256 with 512MB (768MB total) or 1GB (total 1.25GB). Any guidance please? Thanks in advance. Ramesh

SATA DVD burner
by Guest Wolfgang70- 1 reply

Hello, I'm hoping someone in here can give me a hand. I recently purchased a SATA DVD burner that has me perplexed. I hooked it up, set it up in windows and then put in a DVD and all it did was spin. It's an ECS KN1 Extreme mobo with 2 IDE HDD, one IDE DVD-ROM, floppy and flash card reader. It has six SATA ports that I tried three different cables into each one. The BIOS is updated and so are all of the drivers available for the mobo. I could not find a specific BIOS setting related to SATA. Windows recognizes the DVD burner and has assigned it a drive letter it just won't play a disc. Not DVD, DVD-r blank or even a CD. I know the burner works …

Problem with hiding inactive icons
by Guest Mary- 5 replies
For some reason, the ability to hide inactive icons has suddenly stopped working. I've downloaded the fix from Kelly's page but this made no difference. I'm currently running Windows XP Pro SP2 with all updates, and I have tried everything to resolve this issue. Just to clarify, when you right click the taskbar, then go to Properties, and then check the box marked "Hide Inactive Icons", there will usually be chevrons marking the disappearance of icons that have not been recently clicked. For me, there isn't. They just seem to build up, and it's annoying not to have the option to hide them anymore. I've customized the behavior of the icons, and all are marked …

Can DVDs play smoothly in XP with 240 ram?
by Guest TimLewis- 9 replies
My Toshiba Satellite laptop only has 240 MB of ram (1.20 GHz) and I'm assuming that's why DVDs cannot play very smoothly? Or is there some other secret to it? I don't want to upgrade the memory if it wouldn't solve the problem. The CD/DVD player is SD-C2502. Any help appreciated (I can't stand watching jittery DVDs)! TimLewis
