A network cable is unplugged.

This message comes up under the heading of Local Area Connection. It will appear intermittantly during the use of the computer on the internet. This will lead to Program Not Responding messages and the lock-up of the computer. the only resolution is to Shut Down the computer at the Tower. When it is turned on again the internet connection is just fine again until sometimes soon, sometimes quite a while the whole process repeats. I have checked the physical connections repeatedly, finding all secure. The computer is running Windows XP Home, Microsoft updates are installed automatically, SP2 included. Suggestions ?? Thank You Tom.

Blue screen of death on start up

I need to find a way to pause the BSOD so I can find out what the error messages are. I am using XP Pro. The BSOD appears for about 1\2 second and then dissappears and the computer reboots, It does not matter if I am trying to start normally or if I try in any of the safe modes. I can reach recovery console from the cd. If there is no way to pause the BSOD, then is there another way to find the error.

Stop Internet access list.

We have co-op students working in our office and want to restrict their visits to approved web sites. Some of the websites on the available list are ones that we develop. These web sites receive graphic files such as .AI, .EPS & .PDF, which can be saved easily to the folder on the user's machines. Our problem in IE is that when we turn content on the student can not save .BMP or .JPG files to their computers. Can we receive a suggestion as how to control web access and still download our graphic files?

Install Shield wants to uninstall different program during install
by Guest Rebeccartist- 1 reply

I ran some Norton utilities (disk doc., Win doc., Cleanup) + Windows defrag this morning. I've since tried to install some landscape design software, using its CD, and as soon as its Setup.exe file is picked, Install Shield for a very old game I've had on my HD for a year appears, and says it's going to uninstall that game, and asks if I want to continue. I have installed a number of programs via CD + Install Shield w/out problems, prior to today, since that game was originally installed. So, it appears my Installer now has a pointer set incorrectly, for some reason. I've tried the following to kickstart it: Reboot Uninstalled a different program (…

.net Framework

My old scanner died and I had to purchase another. The old scanner was HP4300 and the new one is G4010 photo. Now to what I am posting for. While installing the software .net 1.1 framework was installed.I removed it but that renders the software that came with it useless. This is not really a problem but when XP boots up with the framework installed I have to use the login window or click on an icon to continue the srartup. Would anyone know how I can configure this to boot into windows without the login window or this annoying icon I have to click. I am running WinXP home with all the updates applied.

When I highlight a digital photo I have uploaded from my camera to my hard drive with my curser I am no longer able to right click on that photo and send its file to my cd drive to eventually burn to a cd. In fact, the cd rom associated with Windows XP no longer shows up as an option when I follow the process mentioned above. What is the solution?

Windows XP Encryption
by Guest Freitag- 3 replies

Hi. A couple of years ago, I encrypted my "My Documents" folder, at the request of my company. Shortly afterwards, we switched to a program that encrypts the entire hard drive, and I forgot that my data files were also encrypted by Windows. I got a new computer, made a backup of the entire hard drive on my old machine, and disposed of my old machine. My new box has a different version of XP. 1 - Can I use my entire backup from DVD to restore my keys/certs/whatever? 2 - Must I do a complete restore to do this recovery, or can I just restore parts? (I do not have a recovery agent, nor did I back up my keys/certs. Please do not direct me to any of Micro…

Remote Assistance Works One Way, But Not The Other?
by Guest (PeteCresswell)- 3 replies

Two PCs. Had Remote Assistance working a-ok over my local LAN. Now one of the PCs is 100 miles away attached to a Verizon DSL modem. I can invite that other PC to look at my PC and take control of my PC and it works A-OK. But when that PC invites me and I accept (over Windows Messenger) a "Remote Assistance" dialog pops that briefly says "Remote assistance attempting...." but very quickly changes to "Remote assistance connection disconnected. Please try again." The first message isn't there long enough to be read in it's entirety. We tried turning off the firewall on the remote PC, then turning off the firewall on my PC. No improvement, same r…

I had windows XP Home Edition before, and I want to try install the Windows XP Professional. So I inserted the CD and followed the steps, the computer restart and it asked me to press any key to boot the CD, and I did so. It went pretty smooth. When it comes to the step that ask me to choose a harddisk to install the WinXP Prof. I suddendly decide not to install the WinXP Prof for some reasons, so I pressed F3 to exit and F3 again to confirm exit the installation. The problem is everytime I turn back on the Computer, it has two option in the boot up screen. One is "Windows XP Home Edition" and other is "Windows XP Professional Installation". It see…

Windows XP Home Edition
by Guest JW- 6 replies

My question is that a friend of mine has Windows XP Home Edition and several unauthorized individuals have compromised the password. She asked me how to change the password and walked her through the steps. I had her go to user accounts to change the password, but it wouldn't let her change the password. I'm sure I had her in as the computer administrator. I even tried to change the password myself with no success. What am I doing wrong. Please advise. JW
