Hey I got 2 computers a home. pcA uses winXPpro+sp2, pcB uses win2k3 These 2 computers are connected to each other via a router. I've created a Active Directory on the win2k3 computer, and now I wants the winXP box to join the AD. Both computers are using static IP Both compueters have set up a LMHOSTS file: 192.168.1.30 "HOMEAD \0x1b" #PRE 192.168.1.30 PCB #PRE #DOM:HOMEAD 192.168.1.20 PCA In "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" on the winXP machine, default NetBIOS setting is selected... should I use "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" instead ?? When I run nbtstat -c from the winXP machine I get this... I think it's a bit strage that the 3 last lines shows …

Passing command line argument via Windows Shortcut
by Guest Peter Lu- 1 reply
Hi, Does anyone know if there is an easy way to set up a Shortcut (.lnk) to a program or batch script that will solicit the user for command line arguments? With the old (16-bit?) PIF mechanism, a "?" on the "Cmd line:" tells the PIF to open a dialog to get user inputs. Unfortunately, that no longer works for the (32-bit?) LNK mechanism. Thanks for help. -- Keep it brief: http://www2.paypc.com/mailrules/

SIDEBAR NOT SHOWING IN IE
by Guest JudyA- 2 replies

For some odd reason, when I am in the link http://www.scsc.state.pa.us/scsc/site/default.asp, I cannot view the yellow sidebar on the left hand side where links are listed. The only thing that shows up for me is a small yellow bar that is approximately 2 inches wide and 1/2 inch high with nothing in it. I am the only one that I know of that is having this problem. When I need to use this site, the only way that the sidebar shows for me is if someone emails the web site to me and then I can use it from my email. I have IE7 but it was like this before I upgraded to that. How can I get this sidebar to show and why am I the only one having this problem? I ev…

Sending a fax
by Guest Terry- 3 replies

I have a Canon printer/fax. I have blood labs done on a regular basis. I can just scan them and fax them using the fax machine, but I often would like to attach instructions to them. (without having to print them) What I would like to do is be able to scan each page of my labs and save them to my computer. I would then like to send the jpgs to the doctor and include a letter. I haven't figured out a way to send the entire batch with one phone call. Can this be done with software included with Office 2003 or XP? Thanks for you time

by Guest Emjaykay- 1 reply

Hi, I am running Windows XP SP2 on a 3.3ghz machine with 2gb RAM. Motherboard has sound and video on board. A couple weeks ago I lost my sound card did some stuff and tried to re install drivers but it just hangs. The sound card is not recognised (AC97 on the motherboard). When I logged off the computer would not shut down and hung. I had to physically turn it off. It is still the same today except if I switch off in safe mode no apparent problems. Now it is a dog loading up and takes an age. USB connected equipment (printer, backup drives, camera) is not always recognised. I tried to uninstall the USBs and it would not let me, I tried to search…

Minimum needed for XP, sp2 smooth running.
by Guest monty1945@lycos.com- 3 replies

A relative asked me a question about processor speed, now that he has cable modem and it's really slow (he used to have DSL, which was faster). I'm the "computer guy" in the family, so I get asked all these questions at family gatherings. He has a P2, MMX, 400 MHz with 384 MB RAM now, and since he switched to cable modem, it's really slow (but it was fine when he had DSL - his wife made the switch). He has a friend who has a celeron running at 600 MHz, but it only has 192 of RAM. Both have XP pro, sp2. He doesn't want the friend to ship the computer to him, due to shipping costs, unless he knows that it will run considerably faster. I told him I didn't know…

This morning I got a lot of updates for my XP Pro. After the updates completed it required a restart. Now I get a small window which says:- DATAEXECUTION PREVENTION - MICROSOFT WINDOWS Windows has closed this program. Name. Windows Update Automatic Updates. Publisher Microsoft Corporation ' When I say Dont Send it stays there when I say send, it still stays there. This is rather annoying. I do not even know the update which is responsible for this so that it can be removed from add-remove programs. Please some one help. Thanks and Regards, Farid

STARTUP FAILURE

Changed a driver for a Promise Ultra 100 IDE drive controller. Decided to try the WinXP driver instead of Promise's. Upon boot I saw a STOP error and the PC failed to boot (BSOD). Tried booting with SAFE mode but to no avail; same BSOD. Decided to try the Boot to last successful .... it worked! My question: How else could I have rectified the BAD XP driver seeing even SAFE mode failed to get me to a desktop to rollback the driver? TIA Vic
