I keep getting a blue screen error and the computer shuts down immediately I’ve tested all the hardware with a testing program which reports all components are working. I’m now assuming it is a software problem, how do I find out what is causing the problem. My operating system is XP pro and the error happens randomly sometimes I can go the whole day without an occurrence, other times it can happen several times a day.

Services not starting in Windows XP
by Guest ST- 1 reply

Hello there, I have a Windows XP OS from 2003 which was never in its history connected to the internet. I connected it. We had problems connecting to their internet service but I soon realized that the problem was corrected by going to Admin, Services and enabling the DHCP - starting it. I did also set it to automatic. The main problem is that everytime we reboot virtually all of the important services are not restarted. The DHCP, the windows automatic updates, the BITS, the themes, the windows installer, etc... you name it.....many important services are not started and I ALWAYS have to go into services and START the specific service including…

Windows Product Key Key Update Tool
by Guest Alan- 3 replies

I know this is old ground for most of you. When I sent my CPU out for repair it came back without my XP CD and I started to get the nagware regarding WGA. The repair shop is out of business, of course! Is the downloadable tool to resolve this, product key update tool, reliable and are there any issues that I should know about before attempting to fix this problem? If it's difficult or has problems, I'll just live with the nag, nag, nag. I don't want to make things worse than they are now. I've been to the site and understand it for the most part, but if somethning can go wrong, I'll find it. I would appreciate any feedback I can get. Thanks, -- Alan

How to protect your privacy while on WiFi ?
by Guest wylbur37- 12 replies

When using the Internet via WiFi at a public place such as a library or cafe, it is conceivable that the people running the router could be capturing all of your transmissions and therefore could be recording your name, account numbers, etc. Are there ways to prevent or minimize this hazard? For example, would it help to use something like Torpark? What would you recommend?

Dual Booting
by Guest Vince- 3 replies

Hello; Not sure this is the correct forum but it was the best I could figure out in the list. I just want to know if I use a single hard drive formatted into 4 partitions and decide to do a dual dual boot with some combination of windows from 98se up to XP what happens if one of the systems go down. Do I have to reinstall both or just one of the os,es or does it depend on which one goes down? This is and extra question I don't know if anyone else knows here but worth a try. What if I decide to dual boot some version of Windows and some other test system to go along with it that is not Windows same question as above. Thanks

Why no BOOTCFG utility on my system?
by Guest Emerald Saint- 9 replies
I found several references on the web that say I can get to BOOTCFG if I simply type BOOTCFG in the Start Menu command prompt. I tried both the RUN box and the Command Prompt , but neither works. So I searched my hard drive for BOOTCFG and discovered there's no file by that name. I found a procedure that will install the recovery console on my computer, however the other references I found sound like I should already have the capability from the Start Menu. MY QUESTION: should I have BOOTCFG available from the Start Menu? Or is it necessary to install the Recovery Console? TIA Bill S.

Re: DISK DEFRAGMENTER

Re: DISK DEFRAGMENTER This was exactly the repair I was looking for. I had installed Diskeeper on a free trial basis, but couldn't afford to buy it when the trial ran out several weeks back so I uninstalled it. I decided I needed to defrag yesterday and discovered that my defrag shortcut was gone. I think Diskeeper is so aggressive that it tries to take the place of the Windows Defragger, and when I deleted it, it took the shortcut to the Windows Defragger with it. I've heard a lot of good things about Diskeeper, but I am not happy with what happened when I uninstalled it. Anyway, thanks for posting the way to reinstall the original shortcut to t…

Hi, I wanted to setup Fax on my machine. My OS is XP pro SP2. During the Setup the XP pro SP2 disc (which was given by my retailer) was prompted for, because my machine does not have i386. The computer is not copying the files necessary from the disc's i386 folder . My original installation disc is only XP pro SP1a and has the i386 folder Should I attempt the procedure with the SP1a? If no, then what's the solution? Thank you Chateau

SSdiag issue on start up
by Guest Joe T- 1 reply

A couple of days ago 2 boxes would appear on my screen once I had logged on to my laptop. These I believe were DOS program jargon (black background with white lettering) tittled DRCVdiag with a green and black medical cross in the corner. After going through the usual help advice, going through msconfig and getting a list of everything that is listed to start, I had to delete each command on start up to find out where the conflict was. Anyway, in the end I found it was something called SSdiag under the command C:WINDOWS\ssdiag.exe and when this wasn't highlighted on start up no more boxes appearing. Now for some this would keep them happy but obvi there is …

How do I disable the Desktop Cleanup Wizard?
by Guest Musawwir Spiegel- 6 replies

Is there a way for me to disable the "Desktop Cleanup Wizard" from appearing on my screen and prompting me about unused program icons on my desktop? I am perfectly aware that I can delete any desktop icons any time I wish. I don't need this annoying pop-up to remind me.
