windows could not properly load the Russian keyboard layout
by Guest rhaertel80- 0 replies

I am trying to add support for a Russian keyboard and get the following error: "Windows could not properly load the Russian keyboard layout" This message occurs after adding the keyboard through "Text Services and Input Languages". The error message occurs when "apply" is hit. An internet search reveals that this has happened to several people for different languages, but few have posted fixes to the problem. Note that kbdru1.dll is in c:\windows\system32. My sister-in-law would really like to get in touch with her friends in Russia, so I hope somebody knows the solution. Thanks in advance!

Mouse via Num KB
by Guest Mouse control via KB- 1 reply

LS, I posted this question in the XP Accessibility forum, but no reactions; therefor I post it here: On my daughter's system (W-XP Home ed NL) she uses the numeric KB to control the mouse. For this the mouse control item under the accessibility control has been activated. It worked for about a half year, but now the function is off and cannot be turned on again. The local services listing (Config, System control. Services) shows that apparatus for human interface is not active; Entry for specific apparatus for use of predefined KB keys is not active. Starting it gives error 126: module not found. All regular updates are automatically installed; I can…

"Backup" PC
by Guest Tcs- 2 replies

Ever since I upgraded to a newer PC several months ago, I've been planning on assembling another PC, to use primarily as a server, but to also be available as a "backup" to my primary PC. Because this was my intent, I purchased an indentical motherboard, the same amount of RAM, the same CPU, etc. As it turns out, the only difference between the two is that because I'm using two different style cases, I have to reduce the number of drives in my "backup" box by one. So I omitted one optical drive. Note that I also use removable cartridges for my hdds, so installing, removing, swapping one or more drives is as easy as shutting down, unlocking, removing and then ins…

Mouse and Keyboard don't work - sometimes
by Guest pkerr- 12 replies

When I start my machine the mouse and keyboard respond (lights on keyboard and I can move the hour glass) as it's booting up but as soon as I get to the window where I am to select which user is to log into the machine they quit responding. If I start up in safe mode everything works fine. I can select the user I want and get my desktop. I check device mgr and everything looks normal. Thanks

Limited user account can't print, admin is okay...
by Guest Homer J. Simpson- 0 replies

I have an HP LaserJet 4350dtnsl hooked up to a machine's parallel port and shared. I can print as myself (an admin account) from any machine on my LAN. I've installed the latest drivers I could find on HP's site. I have a restricted user account on one of the machines (not the one with the printer), and this user can't print--even Notepad is giving 'access denied' messages. This particular user only has an account on this one machine. This is a home LAN, without a domain controller or Active Directory, so this user can only log in locally on that machine (eg, he can't roam and log on other machines using domain credentials). Dunno if that's relevan…

Uh.. How to search a specific folder?
by Guest Mike J.S.- 11 replies

How the hell do you search a specific folder (and all subfolders) in WinXP? It's driving me nuts how dumbed-down this OS is, and how you can ONLY search "All Files and Folders" or "Documents" or "Pictures", etc. I want to search for specific files in a specific folder. I've asked 3 people already and no one knows how. Nor can they understand why it's so unnecessarily complicated to begin with. Indexing is OFF. Just a plain, normal, real-time search. Thanks.

Locking a computer without logging off...
by Guest Mike J.S.- 7 replies

Hi, A friend of mine has WinXP and is able to "lock" his computer without logging off. In fact, the welcome screen that asks you for your user password is different on his machine (it's a small square at the center of the screen, instead of the full page we get by default). I have the same thing on my computer at work, which is also WinXP. He said he once had it like I do, but then installed Autopatcher and it produced this change. Whatever it is that Autopatcher installed or turned on, it was from a Microsoft update or patch of somekind. Could someone tell me how I can do the same on my WinXP x64? What patch or switch do I need to look into?

by Guest luvfiji- 0 replies

I tried using the printing trouble shooter multiple times and cannot figure out why I cannot print. I have tried test pages, notepad, word, ecetera. While attempting to print, I have watched the task bar for printing, it appears for a moment that there is a job to print and then it disappears and nothing prints. I am able to use my printer for copying and scanning. I use windows XP and a Dell photo 924 printer. Help please, Sarah

"Limited Account" Greyed out on secondary User
by Guest Elliot J- 1 reply

Hi all, I have cross-posted as I couldn't decide on an ideal group for my query. I have an XP Pro machine with two users. The Administrator account and JohnDoe (Guest is disabled). Both are currently set as administrators. What I want to do is only allow the JohnDoe account Limited privileges. I have logged out (even rebooted) and logged in as Administrator, then entered into the User Accounts area to switch JohnDoe to Limited, however the option is greyed out. I was under the impression that as long as one account had admin rights, you could set all else as Limited. Am I missing something blatantly obvious? I consider myself to be pretty IT savvy,…

Disk fragment in XP
by Guest Mark G.- 7 replies

If I have a hard drive that is purely for data and no registry or applications exist on it but yet I am reinstalling my OS (Win XP Pro), would you think it is wise to completely wipe this drive provided I have backups of the data on it. By wiping and formatting it again in Win XP, doesn't that start it again back at square one with no fragmentation or can I just simple not wipe it and run a deep defrag program on it? Suggestions here please? Plan on starting my upgrade/reinstall tomorrow.

Will dates change with reinstall?

If I have multiple hard drives with data on them and I reinstall my OS (Win XP pro) on a different hard drive, will the date created and date modified columns remain as they were? I seem to think they would, but want to double check first. Thanks much.
