XP Pro and Vista Ultimate shutdown and immediately restart
by Guest Polaris- 2 replies
System Configuration: HD1 - XP Pro with all updates HD2 - Vista Ultimate with all updates I switch OS at boot time via F10 key. Problem: I select Turn Off computer and system executes normal shutdown procedure. A second or two after shutting down it Restarts. If I press the Power Btn. and hold it down until the system shuts down, power remains off. This occurs using either OS so I suspect something common to both; perhaps the power supply? Any suggestions?

Add or Remove Programs
by Guest Don J- 6 replies

I have two installations of Win'XP. One has "Add or Remove Programs" installed and one does not. In the case of the one that has it installed it appears as a specific item on the takbar. Opening it up shows a single list of all running programs. By selecting any particular item on the list, it open it up, and there are one or two buttons. The button marked Delete is always there. The button marked Modify is sometimes there. By pressing the Delete Button one is able to delete the selected program. I know of a "Task Manager" look alike that has many of the same features of "Add or Remove Programs". But on my system the "Task Manager" version doesn't seem…

Error Msg after Reformatting Hard Drive
by Guest Ranelle- 3 replies

I reformatted my hard drive and installed windows again so I could start with a clean slate. I installed the drivers and everything seemed to be fine but now when I start my computer an error message pops up and says: The procedure entry point LocalizeString could not be located in the dynamic link library STLang.dll. Does anyone know what this means or how I can fix it? I don't know much about computers. Any insight to this problem would be a big help!! (Windows XP Professional, SP2)

Networking Xp Desktop to Vista Notebook - firewall gets in the way!
by Guest Uncle Ben- 4 replies

Is there a way around this? My two-PC network seems to work fine except that I can't share files and printers unless I unload my F-Secure AV and Firewall. Is there a way around that? Another naive question while I am at it - Does the AV software that I have installed on the desktop also protect the notebook (while connected to the network) - or do I also have to install an AV software on it? Many thanks for your help. Cheers!

Suppose my antivirus program breaks the connection to the internet (this has never happened but it could happen). I have DSL modem that automatically connects whenever I turn on the computer. If the connection is broken, would I have to reboot or is there a way to reconnect? My Start> Connect To does not list my current DSL connection.

Downloaded Program Files

I had a look at the DPF folder through 'View Objects? and found 4 entries damaged. Twoi refer to Symantec which I do not use but may have done an online scan in the past; the others were fro Microsoft: Security/controls/sass and the other to do with the the update. Although I repaired them I wonder why they got damaged. I am pretty certain I have no viruses at the present. Then, can I delete the Symanted ones? Directly from the folder, or is it better through HijackThis? Thank you JB

How to clone a hard disk ?
by Guest RJK- 16 replies

I thought I'd try a route different to ghosting C:\ out to a USB hd, and then restoring that image onto a new hd, i.e. booting from Norton 9.0 Ghost bootable cd 'cause is slowish. So I tried the "Copy drive" on the Norton Ghost 9.0 windows interface, to "copy drive" C:\ on hd0 to hd1's unallocated space (both SATA hd's). On the options screen I ticked "Set drive Active" (for booting OS) ....there's a radio button in Primary Partition. Drive Letter is set to None, 'cause C:\ is unavailable ? ....and I put a tick in "Copy MBR" ....now I left it "copying", and when I returned, the XP screensaver was on but, I don't think it had rebooted, and I dutifully …

Why Can't I Sign In to Windows Vista Community?
by Guest XRaySpeX- 7 replies
I have a NET Passport and can, and always have, successfully Sign In to the Windows XP Newsgroups. However, when I want to ask a question in the Windows Vista Community it fails to Sign me in or post a New Question. All it does is return to the same page after a long delay, with me still Signed Out. Sometimes, usually on the 1st attempt of the session, it does display the Login page but ignores it; more often it does absolutely nothing.

Avoid SP3 reminder?
by Guest RasVed- 6 replies

Hi. I have software which is not compatible with SP3, and hence this service pack is not a usuable solution for me. I'm still interesseted in reminders about new updates, which can be installed at SP2, so my question is: How can I tell automatic update to ignore SP3 and only present all other updates to me? As it is now, I constantly get pop-up messages, that Automatic Update wants to install SP3... Further more I have a yellow exclamation mark in my task bar, which makes both me and other users nervous, and make me miss other important updates...

Hi, A Motherboard failure that took out the CPU and one hard drive resulted in: A new Motherboard, CPU and Hard drives with WinXP SP2 ghosted from my old hard drive. Things seem to be OK, but for : 1. Win Update site scans my PC and after offering SP3 (refused) : a. "Review other updates" b. "Need to download/install latest version of update" c. "Update Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 failed to update" Any attempt to review my update history gets me nowhere. Safe to delete shortcut files in Recent folder?
by Guest Markkk- 3 replies
In my Documents and Settings/Owner folder, there’s a folder called Recent, which contains several hundred .lnk files with names matching files in the My Documents folder. They are identified as shortcuts, but I haven’t knowingly created them, so why are they there and can I safely delete them? The icon for the Recent folder is different than other folder icons in having a clock on it, so it may indicate that its contents have time limits on them, but some of the .lnk files are 3 years old, which may mean I have to manually delete them to clean up unused files. Is that true?
