Virus has disabled administrator access
by Guest Allen Clark- 4 replies
I have a user that has picked up a virus or worm that has disabled the control panel from any user that is logged on to the system in Windows XP SP2 (with all security fixes installed) running Symantec Corporate Edition 10.0 with current virus signatures. If I log in using the local administrator account, I cannot open the control panel. I get a message saying that this has been disabled, contact my local administrator. I cannot open the control panel from the run command either. I cannot get into the add/remove programs and I cannot disable the system restore to try to clean up some of these virus files. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Allen

memory warning alert?
by Guest Laughingstar~*- 4 replies

I checked this on Goggle w/o any luck...What does this warning window mean: Ox7c9106c3 referenced memory Ox6c14f6fa? It opened up while I was doing a spell check on a NG post. Not certain if that references an "O" or a zero. Use a screen reader...sorry. I have an HP Professional Desk Top computer, 2 years old in October, on which is XP Pro Sr 2, Office 2003, all updates current (including today's to scan my system for "malicious" invasions from MS...which I really didn't want to do, but... I use Avast, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Windows firewall is ON. Nothing has shown as a problem in any of the above. Thank you...Laughingstar/ aka Puddintaine

Have not segmented my HD, so backing up is horrid...
by Guest Laughingstar~*- 4 replies

any ideas? I brought it up to MS when I had to do the clean re-install, but they weren't encouraging about segmenting My Docs onto another Drive, and I haven't been, but backing up everything to CDRWs is a pain. Any ideas? I do have the OE backup proggy installed from MS, and its great, but I'd prefer to back it up onto a CDRW routinely, and be done with it (as an archive, not overwrite the prior). All else need to be backed up so if I go to Windows, Drive C I select the folders there...and have to burn CDRWs each time. This last time my browser kept having "to close" and it drove me nuts. Please send your great ideas. Thank you. aka Puddintaine, forme…

Icon behaviour in a folder
by Guest craigcu- 1 reply

Hello everyone, When I open a Pictures folder just containing icons (.ICO files), there are some with "Unspecified" dimension. These files display an image in the main window under most of the view options ("Icons", "Tile", "Thumbnail", "List" and "Detail") except in "Filmstrip" view I get "No Preview Available". MS Paint cannot read these .ICO files with "Unspecified" dimension. Also the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" app yields "No Preview Available". So what good good are these icons? Shouldn't XP just tell me they're invalid files? The background (for those still reading): Running XP Pro version 2002 SP2 on a P4 3.2GHz with 2Gb RAM I have b…

I recently did a reinstall of a dell XPhome desktop. All went well except for the RealTek HD5136 sound driver. RealTek's tech support says that the OS is missing some files. Is their an option on an XPHome OS disc to repair? What is the best way to use such an option?

Can't install XP from CD
by Guest Chico- 1 reply
To make a really long story short, about a month ago I got infected with malware and it totally screwed up my computer. Of the many problems I have, whenever I try to open an application I get a prompt to choose what application I want to use to open it. For example, if I try to open Word, it will paradoxically ask me what I want to use to open it. Sometimes choosing the same application from the list works, sometimes it doesn't. Of the numerous other problems I have, I can't open many critical files such as Control Panel. I've tried fixes such as System Restore but nothing works. I want to do a clean install of XP, but when I put the CD in my drive, th…

Computer will not boot up
by Guest Moses- 2 replies

When starting my computer, it will display the wall paper, plays the Windows startup sound, the mouse pointer appeard and I can move it around, but it stops there. My desktop icons will not come up, and the taskbar is also gone. I have tried the right click solution but no menu comes up. I can get into safe Mode and disabled everything in MSCONFIG->Startup, and uninstalled the Video Driver, and tried booting in VGA Mode, but it still stops at that certain point. Any ideas or suggestions. Thanks
