I use WinXP with IE7. Often I get a "Update Ready to Install" icon notice in my Quick Launch Tray. When I click the icon to go ahead and install the update, a speech bubble comes up telling me I can use other programs while updating. How do I get rid of the speech bubble? -- Jack Nation

Re: Auto Update caused restart They DO. I finally caught one of my PCs doing this: http://www.gerhardstein.net/picturestokeep/stupidwindowsmessage.bmp I have seen this in 2000 and XP. After an automatic update, this window pops up and you get 5 minutes to click "Restart Later" or it takes your computer down for you. I have a number of mission-critical computers that this bug took down and left me standing there the next morning getting asked by my boss "What happened last night???". I have since moved to Linux instead of Windows on these systems for just this reason. Microsoft, you dofus, FIX THIS BUG! Don't you realize some people use your …

WinXP backup restore: The target file system does not support some the features...
by Guest FUBARinSFO- 0 replies

Hi: I've copied a set of .bkf files to another system. I'm running a test of their restorability (to a different location) and in the course of launching the restore I get the message "The target file system does not support some the features of the original file system. Some data may not be restored as a result." Both source and target system are Windows XP SP2 NTFS. The backupnn.log file (with detail) doesn't show any files skipped. The restored file structure is about the same size as the .bkf file. Where are skipped files, if any, logged? Any light you can throw on this problem would be appreciated. -- Roy Zider

Netframework 3 and subsequent High Priority Update KB934238
by Guest Romeo- 0 replies

OS--XP-PRO-SP2 Q6600 processor Without going into much detail I returned the above computer because of a problem that I believe regarded an "automatic" update that caused many problems after I updated the netframework to 3.0. This new computer was 2 days old. My computer became so slow I could not access a web-page from another web-page. Tech support at Dell could not seem to find the fix without causing other problems. After my computer was reformatted and Dell installed XP-Pro again I still had problems. Example: bootstrap.exe error trying to download IM. Also, Dell did not think I needed Netframework 2 and I could not install OneCare without …

Cookie Problem
by Guest PT- 2 replies

I set my IE7 browser to query me with a "Privacy Alert" each time a website wants to deposit a cookie. In most cases, I select "always block". Occasionally I find that doing so has disabled otherwise desired downloads from the site. So in such cases I want to change my decision. It's not that easy. I've tried a few things.to reverse the decision, but none seem to work. What's the best way to reverse the block -- PT

Opening .DOC & .XLS files from Explorer and OE freezes.
by Guest XRaySpeX- 0 replies

Just lately I have been unable to open .DOC and .XLS files (& probably others) from either Windows Explorer by double-clicking or from the context menu Open, or from Outlook Express as attachments. When I try to open them this way they freeze the calling program, Windows Explorer or Outlook Express. I can succesfully open such files from within their native applications, Word or Excel. Only last week I was able to open them from within Windows Explorer or Outlook Express but this ability seems to have gone away lately. I think this might have something to do with DDE. Both file types say Use DDE. The DDE Message fields were :- For .DOC: [REM _DDE_D…

Reclaim Your PC From The Internet Spies
by Guest jmcbiz- 2 replies

http://www.pcerrorsrepair.com/virus/reclaim_your_pc_from_the_internet_spies.html Most Internet users recognize the need of protecting their computers against viruses, as the vast majority of us sooner or later become painfully aware of these nasty little programs when they shut down our PC, spam our mailbox or delete our files. Viruses are, however, not the only malicious software programs out there. The newest addition to the evil software family is the so called Spywares and a good anti- virus program or firewall is not enough to safeguard against these clever programs. Spywares are known by many names such as adware, trojans, malware, browser hijackers …

Somehow or other I am now unable to open pdf files by double clicking on them from explorer - I get the message 'windows cannot open the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them'. I get this message on every pdf file whether on my hard drive (both partitions) or a product cd no matter what the permissions are. However: - pdf files are associated with reader 8.1.0 - I am logged on as administrator - the files open ok by selecting adobe reader from the 'open with' option - the files open ok from within adobe reader - the files have full administrator and system permissions Some of the pdf files were transf…
