Problem with providing remote assistance
by Guest Victek- 1 reply

Hello! I'm trying to get the "Offer Remote Assistance" feature working. It should be possible to send an invitation from the support computer offering the assistance to the user who needs the assistance, but I can't get this to work - I get a "permission denied" error when trying to connect using either the computer's name or the computer's IP. It DOES work if the user needing assistance sends an invitation via email so I know the network is not blocking the connection. I've added the support tech's account to the user's list of administrators. This made it possible to use Remote Desktop to log in to the user's computer, but it didn't help with offeri…

force winexit.scr as default screensaver for all users in domain e
by Guest panopticon- 0 replies

Hello, I'm still trying to figure out how to make winexit.scr be the default screensaver for all users who login to our lab's machines, which are running XP Pro. These are public-access computers, users login to them by authenticating against a domain that I do not control. I also don't control the users...the University we are a part of has control over the domain. So what I want is for winexit.scr to be the only screensaver they've got. I plan to block their ability to change screensavers (or delete the .scr files) via group policy. I've found an explanation online of how to set winexit.scr as the default for all users by modifying the registry on a Windows …

How To Protect Yourself From Online Attack
by Guest jmcbiz- 1 reply

It's a jungle out there on the net, but by using these few simple tricks and traps, anybody can protect themselves from the virtual beasts that lurk there, waiting to attack the unwary. Online security is not just for big corporations. It's true that they stand to lose more, in terms of value, than you or I, but they have sufficient reserves to be able to weather the storm, whereas the average small business or man on the street is in a much more precarious position. Using your credit or debit card online is no longer as dangerous as it once was, but there are other ways in which use of your computer can be made difficult, even impossible. Viruses are ju…

One user on my network is being continually locked out of her account. After some investigation we have tracked it down to a specific PC (D7C63D) that whenever it is switched on it tries to connect to the network using the users username and a password. The following error messages were logged in the main server event logs: The logon to account: user02 by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 from workstation: D7C63D failed. The error code was: 3221225578 Logon Failure: Reason: Unknown user name or bad password User Name: user02 Domain: D7C63D51 Logon Type: 3 Logon Process: NtLmSsp Authentication Package: NTLM Workstation Name: D7C6…

What to do?
by Guest Mike- 1 reply

I had posted earlier about being given a computer that wouldn't boot, couldn't do a repair install & appeared that the Windows directory was wiped clean. I had purchased an OEM copy of XP Home & a new HD (from a reputable source!) & intended to put the disk in another computer, copy what was left & reinstall on the new drive. When I started computer that the old drive was mounted in, checkdisk started at boot up, giving a bunch of messages about corrupt attributes & repairing them I let it run it's course & the contents of the windows directory was back to normal. Put drive back in old computer, booted up & everything looked f…

PROs!!! I need some help!..

hi, I've got a really weird problem. Whenever my windows gets logged on, I have to wait till all the programs start up before I use my mouse to click on something. If I click on some part of the screen, say the task bar, before all the programs start up, I can't use the task bar till I re-log in. The task bar functions properly but doesn't respond to mouse or keyboard input. What is wrong here? I tried scanning for viruses and spywares in safe mode. It was clean. I thought that the problem might be in one of the start up programs. so I used MSCONFIG to check out the start up programs. The following were the only ones that I don't know the purpose for:- …

One box keeps vanishing from Workgroup...?
by Guest Kenneth- 2 replies

Howdy, We have 6 systems on our office lan... Two are Win 2000 Pro, and four are XP. One of the XP machines frequently (make that very frequently) disappears from the Workgroup when viewed from other systems. At that point, rebooting the vanishing machine cures things, but only for a while. It might be fine for a few hours, but then pffft, and it's gone again. What might be causing this, and how can I correct it? Very sincere thanks, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS."

Read-only problem with SBS 2003 and XP SP2
by Guest penelope_baker@hotmail.com- 0 replies

I'm at a complete loss here. MSFT TSS hasn't been able to help either. We have had an ongoing, intermittent problem for over a year now with files on network drives suddenly going read-only on us. It seems to happen at hour intervals when it happens, and then it stops for days. I have ruled out an anti-virus or backup program. It has persisted through SP0 through SP2 of both client and server OSes. If anyone has any ideas of what might occur on an hourly basis to check, I'd be much appreciative... Thanks, Pen

default user names
by Guest YO- 8 replies

Hi! I "inherited" a computer at work when its only previous user passed away and I replaced her. I changed the user name to mine and mine is the only name that appears in the user accounts section of the control panel and on the logon screen. However, when the computer goes on screen saver it is set up so that it must ask for my password to get on the computer again. When that happens the name of the deceased person appears. The name of the person the computer has been registered to has been changed to mine. But I cannot change the name on the logon screen after a screen saver pause. Is there any way I can change that name?

My computer is running IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254 and claims it's Java enabled, but I can't get into a Client for Java website, and the java tester http://www.javatester.org/enabled.html also says "This web browser can NOT run Java applets." Can anyone tell me what to do to get it enabled? I've been through the Tools/ Internet Options/Security/Custom Level routine and enabled Java there, but still no go. Thanks in advance

Another "Invalid BOOT.INI File" Question
by Guest stgislander- 10 replies

I am performing a new Windows XP Professional installation on a Hitachi microdrive attached to a Tyan motherboard. The installation proceeds smoothly until the first reboot to continue the installation. At that point I get the error, "Invalid BOOT.INI file. Booting from C:\WINDOWS\" The system performs a warm boot and starts the process all over again. It will continue rebooting until I stop it. I followed the steps in Knowledgebase Article #330184 and used the BOOTCFG /REBUILD tool to fix the BOOT.INI file. This did not fix the problem. The BOOT.INI file is located in the root C:\ directory and appears ok. It contains: [boot loader] timeout…

Brief periodic loss of cable connection
by Guest the captain- 1 reply

I am periodically losing my Internet connection on my primary computer. It is physically connected to the cable modem, as opposed to a wireless connection. About every 10 to 15 minutes, a message window will pop up at the bottom of my screen indicating that the "cable is not connected". I lose the connection for a second or two, and then it come back up. Since the problem started, I have replaced the network card, all the network cables and the cable modem. My cable provider has physically inspected the equipment and decided it must be a problem with my system/sofware. I am running Windows XP Media Center. I run antivirus and antispyware software relig…

xp installed in wrong partition
by Guest John- 4 replies

Hi I have two partitions on disk. I began installing xp, deleted and formatted primary partition and let the set-up finish the install. Once finished the set-up gave the primary partition drive letter C: and the other one drive letter D:. The problem is that set-up has also copied ntldr boot.ini etc on D: (secondary) partition instead of on primary (C:) partition. Why is that and is there a way to fix it such that xp is only on primary (C:) so I can delete D: partition should I need to without effecting xp? Thanks Regards
