STOP 0x51 Registry Error
by Guest barrowhill- 6 replies

My neighbour asked me to look at their machine that had started to continually reboot. Having turned off the restart on failure, I could see that the problem was a Registry Error with Stop code 0x51. I've had no joy in in being able to setup windows, repair windows or use recovery console to restart windows (XP Home). At every turn I get BSOD. I've requested yesterday hotfix from Microsoft having submitted an online request (why can't I download directly??) but still waiting. No doubt won't receive anything until after weekend. In meantime I used my copy of XP Pro and tried to run recovery console from this - I'd seen a reference on net on error co…

by Guest Nightowl- 0 replies

My PC occasionally doesn't recover properly from standby, so I've been experimenting with hibernation instead. So far no problems, except twice now this odd error message in Event Viewer when the PC is woken up: Event Type: Error Event Source: PlugPlayManager Event Category: None Event ID: 12 Date: 09/09/2007 Time: 20:45:21 User: N/A Computer: Computername Description: The device 'HP LaserJet 4P' (LPTENUM\Hewlett-PackardHP_LaserJet_4P\5&2fd71acd&0&LPT1.4) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal. I understand what it's saying, but it's odd because a) the print…

Hi My Maxtor hard drive is failing the drive self test in the SeaTools provided by Seagate. Am I now better off backing up the drive and dumping it or is there a way to salvage it such as using a disaster/repair utility? What are some good tools to check the state of a drive? Thanks Regards

managing path lengths of files
by Guest Jonathan- 1 reply

Windows limits the path length of files to 255 characters or less. Are there any tools to automatically warn a user when a file they create has a path length that is over a certain number of characters? For example, I would like to be warned if I create a file with a path length of 220 characters or more. I've been burned, a couple of times, with backup programs. Basically, I've backed up files whose path length is close to 255. When I try to restore such files, because the backup program may add an extra folder in which to put its results, I get error messages that the path names are too long. Thanks!

Hello Everybody, First, I checked out the archives but could find nothing on this particular problem; thus, I would be grateful for any help on the following problem: I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I reinstalled a Kensington Wireless Mouse with accompanying USB receiver. When I moved the receiver to another port, the mouse icon (please excuse the lack of specific terminology) then added the following icons < <> > (which are solid black). I have a pencil in hand icon. Directly underneath it is this black triangle pointing right, a black diamond, and then a black triangle pointing right. I uninstalled the kensington drivers and the pr…

Error 27 Partition Magic 8.0
by Guest cporylo@gmail.com- 1 reply

I am having a problem using Partition Magic 8.0; I have used it successfully in the past. I made some changes to my partitions on my hard drive and began the process, of course the system had to reboot. The problem now is that I keep getting the error 27 cannot lock disk. I cannot get out of it to check for running processes or at least get back to my system. I am prompted about the error 27 and given the option of hitting any key to continue. The system reboots and begins the PM routine. There is a prompt before the routine begins to hit any key to abort, this is not working. I even tried shutting the system down and removing the power cord to clear the sys…

NTFS directory security changed
by Guest SLoweCSL- 0 replies

Twice on my system I have had the default security of root C: and thus all subdirectories under it, change to Everyone - Full Control. I noticed the change after some programs began acting strangely. I then reset the root to the default security back and propagated it through all the subdirectories. All seems to be ok again, but this is the second time and I know I didn't go into the drive properties and change the drive security permissions. I have scanned my system with both AV and spyware scanners, but have come up empty. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this to happen? I am running XP Pro SP2 with all updates applied, running on a 2003 Se…

Control panel issue
by Guest Mikel- 2 replies

Really hoping someone has a solution... I am running Windows XP Professional SP2. I am the only user of my computer and my account was set up with administrator rights. I had a trojan which is now cleared. But the virus changed something in my registry so that I am now locked out of any administrator functions - both in my user account AND under the default Administrator account, even in safe mode. I cannot access my control panel through the start menu or through start -Run: control.exe, cannot right click on my computer to get properties, cannot create new user accounts, etc. I always get a message that the operation has been canceled due to restric…
