Filename too long when transferring computers

Here's something I can't figure out: I bought a new laptop and am transferring files from the old one, through a USB external drive. For some of the files, the new machine says "The filename is too long or filename isn't valid" so the transfer is aborted. They're both XP machines (well, the old one is XP Home and the new one is XP Pro). If the name was fine on the old machine, why isn't it fine on the new one? Especially since in these cases the names aren't even that long. I'm guessing I have to set something on the new machine. Anybody offer any insights? Thanks! John

Slow Defragmentation

I am running XP with SP3 on a 160GB hard drive, of which I have used about 10GB. I have a 1.8G processor. I use Diskeeper 9 Professional to defrag. Until recently it would defrag in about 10 to 15 mins at the most. It has now slowed down to a crawl. I have tried using the built in XP defragger which completes very quickly. I have tried Diskeeper Lite and that too takes a long time. Even when I have just completed a defrag and run Diskeeper again it still then takes an age to complete. I have done a lot of Googling but can not come up with a solution. Any ideas would be appreciated. Daz

windows will not start,error messeage is windows\system32\config\system is missing or currupt.is there any way of fixing this problem without doing a repair from the disk.i have service pack 3 installed.i do have access to another hard drive on my pc that has a working windows.is there any way of useing that windows to eccess the windows on my other partition and fix the problem?

I had to install a new windos xp in a desktop that would not start and would not allow to use the recovery console. Now I have two operating systems: the new xp installation and the old xp installation, and every time I start up I have to chose which one I want to use to startup my comp. Apart from this, the old windows installation holds siginificant space in the disk (together with the program files that had been installed in that windows.) Now I would like to manually delete de old windows xp and the files related to that installation to recover the space in the disk. Hi I am running Win XP Home (SP 3). After re-installing my HP PSC 750 driver, I am constantly receiving Delayed Write Error messages. I cannot disable the write caching on the drive as it is "greyed" out on the Policies tab of the drive properties. I have also tried through the device manger, without success. Is there a way to desable this in the registry? I have looked at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System \CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanman server\Parameters which many sites recommend setting the value to 0. My question is what "item" in this registry setting must be set to 0? Am I on the right track to solve the problem? Do you have any other solutions? Than…

Computer No Longer Goes Into Standby

For years I have set my computer to go into standby when unused for a period of time (30 minutes) for some reason it has stopped going into standby. The monitor goes to sleep and I can hear the hdd attempting to disconnect but it will not go into a complete standby state. If I click "Start\Turn Off Computer\Standby" it still will not go into standby as it did several weeks ago. I have another computer set up essentially the same way and it continues to function as I have set it up. I am at wits end to figure it out. My computer just started crashing consistently, BSOD with the message "BAD_SPOOL_CALLER" and tech info. Puter is Dell (something I quickly regretted), XP sp2, five user accounts, two with passwords. I am locked out of my personal account off and on, crash unexpectedly when I am in. Ditto admin. I did a system restore from admin, but it did not help. Can anyone shed some light on this. I have been unable to unearth anything useful other than the fact that I am not the only one this has happened to.

Spiralfrog is taking up 120megs of RAM, more than I can afford. So I want to uninstall it. Their web site says use control panel -> add/remove programs. But SpiralFrog does not show up in the add/remove list. Any idea how to get rid of it? Thanks, Chas' Win XP Pro

Hello, I have an IDE primary drive (c:) and a SATA RAID 1 as programs & data drive. The raid is an intel southbridge raid controller on the motherboard. My RAID contains my d: and e: drives which contain Program Files and all user data. One of the SATA drives of the RAID died. So I purchased a new identical 160 Gig drive and replaced the bad drive. With the intel RAID controller the array is rebuilt in the OS not the BIOS. So I have to boot the machine into WinXP in order to rebuild the array. Ok, so here lies the rub. But no use after apply as it still choose "Do not Show hidden files and folders" The user is administrator. Why it prohibit me to choose "Show hidden files and folders"? New XP Update yesterday - today won't boot

Hi - I can't boot up my XP Home today - it hangs after I click my User icon, and never reads "Loading ..." Yesterday it installed a Windows automatic update when I turned it off in the morning. Anyone had any similar problems? I"ve started up, pressing F8 to get in Safe Mode, and then I've tried "Last known good configuration", but think I tried that after too many restart attempts, because it made no difference. I"ve tried "System Restore Point" from 2 days ago, but that "failed". Next, I will try to remove yesterday's Update Any ideas?

Hi, I'm having trouble with my internet connection. I run two machines, one laptop which is connecting perfectly, and a desktop which is not. The desktop says that it has an excellent connection (54.0 mbps). I have been through the phone support with linksys (I am able to ping myself, yahoo.com, google.com, with no problems), so they dumped me. However, my explorer says basically that though I have a wireless connection, I do not have an internet connection. Does anyone have any suggestions. When I try to access Help and Support I get the following message:( Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named Help and Support.) I have typed in Run:services.msc, and found Help and Support set on automatic. I have tried a number of reg edits from the Registry XP tweaks site, but nothing seems to help. Would it help if I re-installed Service Pack 2, and if I did would I lose any of my programs? i have entered all the info coorectly into outlook to link in my hotmail accoutn but i repeatedly get the window to enter pusername and pass word. After many ticking of save passowrd the window finally stops popping up and the error notification that outlook could not connet to the hotmai lserver. I know I have entered all the data correctly as i have copied it off my old laptop which linked in operfectly
