Cannot access CD drive
by Guest netwod- 1 reply

Have fitted a brand new DVDRAM drive to customer's Dell Dimension 3000 machine and while XP recognised the new hardware and installed it, neither audio CDs or data CDs are recognised by the computer. Old drive was considered suspect because (a) it behaved just like the new one, (b) it would often open by itself at machine power on, and © would often not close at all when the drive button was pressed, and sometimes would start to close (pulling the drawer in perhaps 1/3 way) before pushing it out again. No other devices on the IDE cable, and old drive was set to Cable Select. New drive responds correctly to the open / close Have downloaded and installed new L…

xp will not boot

I cannot access the cd drive e: Of course, from a: it just tells me that the e: does not exist. I put in the cd and the drive light blinks but does not start. I think my best bet is a new hard drive. Why spend 150 dollars on a repair attempt that may fail! Another question, with a new hard drive do I just use my CD ROM device drivers disk to get the CD drive working? -- Canadianguy

Just set up TalkTalk BB / SmartAX MT882 adsl modem/router for a friend:- 2005 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd http://www.huawei.com/products/terminal/products/view.do?id=121 Installed ZA, and set IE7's Internet security Zone slider to High, ...and whilst tweaking things up, and wading around the ridiculous html menus in the router, to check that NAT was on etc, I went to grc.com | Shields Up and it reported that port 80 was open, and lots of other service ports were not stealthed. Then I noticed that IE7's Internet security zone "slider" had vanished, as if Custom settings had been set, so I set Default and then yanked it back up to High, cleared TIF and C…

Change default "File / Save As" folder globally in Windows XP?
by Guest Michele- 3 replies

I see that you may be able to change the default "File / Save As" folder in unique manners in each application, but is there a way to do it globally? Ex: In Outlook, I get an attachment and I want to save it. If I am not careful, the file gets saved to some random temp directory (folder). Then later, it's a pain to locate that file. I would prefer to make the temp directory = "Project1" or whatever I choose - for easy retrieval. Not just for Outlook, but for MS Office applications too. Appreciate any help out there. -- Thanks!

I have an XP Pro machine, fully updated, that has been running in classic mode for over a year with no problem. Now, every time I reboot I have to set the machine to classic view as it has changed to the normal XP view. Any ideas as to where to look to make the classic view permanent? Many thanks, Dan Rudder

Folder "Arrange Icons by" error
by Guest Zeretul1- 4 replies

I have noticed recently that although I have my folder organization set to Name (alphabetical), when I open the "Open" dialog box in programs and set them to view my folder, they are set in "Modified" (by date) view. The folder is a non-C: drive holding data. My current view is List, and the explorer window itself displays the files in Name order. I recently deleted some hidden files I thought associated with a folder "tweaking" program (change color, background, etc.) do to an unsatisfactory result and noticable folder lag, and now I have encountered this problem. Prior to deleting the files, I did have the folder set to "Modified" by earliest to la…

False "This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port."

False "This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port." I have a laptop, Dell Latitude CX840, and this message keeps occurring. The problem is, these are USB 2.0 ports. I have this machine dual boot Windows 2000 with USB drivers, and it recognizes and runs in 2.0 mode, just on the basis of considerably faster copying times from USB mass storage devices. All devices connect in 1.1 mode when in XP. I don't think this was a problem in SP1, occurred after I applied SP2. Are there steps to make it work in 2.0 mode?
