xp install reboots and starts over
by Guest stewart- 15 replies

I am trying to install windows xp. When I boot the computer it prompts me to format the drive and perform a clean install. I do so it reformats the drive and starts the Windows XP "preinstallation environment" It shows the setup screen and begins the cycle of messages to the right while the timer starts at 52 minutes remaining. Once it finishes "preparing installation" it reboots and i am presented with the same reformat options. I checked the drive and some files have been installed. Why can't i get through the entire install process. I will provide you with whatever info you need.

Scheduled Tasks settings fails when hibernated to "Wake the computer to run this task" In "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks" I have a task ("BitDefender"), set to start daily at 03:01, that in the bottom of its "Settings" tab, has the "Wake the computer to run this task" checked. (BD's internal scheduler can't wake properly; BD when contacted replies this will be fixed later) The computer is a laptop, Uniwill 223ei0, BIOS AMI 223, XP Pro SP2 b2600; in "Start > Settings > CP > Power Options > Advanced > Power buttons" it is set so that pressing power button or closing lid makes the PC hinernate, and pressin…

Greetings: I have an computer used by my children that has one hard drive that is seen as the E: drive. A while back, I had a bad drive that was causing all sorts of problems with the computer before I tracked down the cause. Now there is no C: drive, just the E: drive and it boots fine, but when I try and install drivers for an HP network printer, it fails because it cannot locate the C: drive. I am using Windows XP. How do I change the reference from E: to C:? Thankss pf pford*@bcm.tmc.edu

by Guest Zapcat- 1 reply

I attached my pc to a new router and got a message from the router saying a third party router on my pc. My anti virus software (mcafee & Antivir) does not detect anything malicous. Clearly there is something on my pc acting as a router - is this normal? I use XP Pro (32 bit), fully up to date with updates. Can anyone explain this and offer a solution? Thanks! Zap

WinXP script error?
by Guest John P.- 1 reply

Hi, I think there was a memory leak issue within IE7 on a WinXP SP2 system and browsed several forums on the net and came upon one idea to install the "Windows Script 5.6 for Windows XP and Windows 2000", namely the "WindowsXP-Windows2000-Script56-KB917344-x86-enu.exe" file - After I installed/restarted I can't browse some sites, windows update doesn't work, system restore opens to a blank/empty page (from safe mode as well)... I've installed Windows Script 5.7 for WinXP then uninstalled it, then reinstalled IE7 for SP2 and still have the same issue. Appreciate any help on how to resolve this issue or how to restore it without having to reinstall e…

XP will not boot
by Guest Gary07- 2 replies

What happens? it boots up and when it gets to the point where the welcome screen should appear, the screen stays grey. It will not boot into the welcome screen. I don't think the hard drive is defective just the partition table is damaged. When I boot with the XP startup disk it goes to A:/> when I type in E:/> is says there is no such drive, the same with drive D: I have tried changing the BIOS but the CD Drive is in brackets meaning it is disabled. I don't know how to change the default from disabled to enabled. I turn on the computer and it starts to boot up to windows XP and then stalls just before the welcome screen. It's confusing the H..…

What is wrong with the boot?
by Guest philip- 2 replies
Xp prof always goes to the safe mode. Chkdsk /r does not help. When I did a "fixboot', it still goes to 'safe mode" and whenI hit enter, ta least it load the drivers and I was able to see the word "dafe mode' at the 4 corners for a split second. Then the pc reboot and into the safe mode cycle again. So I decided to slave it in another pc and scan it with AVG, Adware SE and Spybot, all the nasty are deleted. I put back the hard disk as its own Primary Master, the situation remains the sam. ' the safe mode" appears for a split sedong. Can somone advice what is wrong with the OS. Thanks

Explorer instabilities when handling video
by Guest Lester Stiefel- 2 replies
Hi all, Lately I am finding more and more instabilities in explorer. Most of these are in handling of videos and thumbnailing them as well as handling thumbnailing pictures. I believe that the pictures and their thumbnails should be handled "only by" a third party application specifically designed for that purpose. Similarly, the Videos thumbnails, when required, should also be handled by a third party application made specifically for that purpose. Explorer was NEVER designed to handle thumbnails. -- Visit Family Radio Today http://www.familyradio.com/

hi all, i would appreciate your comments on the following, - i have a pc, which i move to different subnets periodically, so each time, i need to change: .. pc name .. ip addr .. gateway .. some enviroment variables - would i do this automatically, that is, in example, with a script written with programs and settings in command line mode (without interacction with the user), and, if it is needed, rstart again? - or any form of "multiple configuration", that i can choose in the booting process??? tks in advance

OT: SPAM from irresponsible free email domain
by Guest Sporkman- 3 replies

Please pardon if the subject is OT. The free email account site "techemail.com" is being used by spammers -- probably was set up by spammers -- to deliver mass emails, and the site's administrator is unresponsive (is probably complicit). The site has no "abuse@techemail.com" address, no webmaster email address and no links to any contact. About the only thing you can do on the site is to take out a free email address (or a paid "enhanced" email account). There is a disclaimer on the site that says "Spamming will not be tolerated", but this is apparently just a cover -- these people are not being accountable or responsible, albeit perhaps responsible in the se…
