Whenever I right-click a file or folder to produce the pop-up menu so that I can delete or do other admin stuff, I encounter this error msg: Key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Corel\CorelDRAW\10.0" Value: "ConfigDir" not found in the Registry The comp hangs for a few seconds, before I can click OK, then the 2nd error msg comes up: The base UI Language directory is invalid This 2 error msg would repeat for a few times while I click their OK button. repeating, taskbar would vanish and then restore again, before the comp resume back to normal. Whenever I right-click again, the same problem would recur. May I know what is the problem? How do I go about …

Every day or two the Classic Start/ Programs menu will truncate to hide programs not recently used; doesn't remove them, just truncates the popup boxes. All I have to do is click on the double arrow symbol and they hidden programs show on the popup but I'd prefer to keep them all on the popup menus at all times. Have XP Pro with all updates and have used this menu style for three years on a previous computer that did not exhibit this behavior. Recently got a new computer with XP installed and it did not exhibit the behavior. Then the Hard Drive failed and Dell sent me a new one with all updates installed. The new hard drive has been installed for …

Disable the "A network cable is unplugged" nag?
by Guest John Corliss- 5 replies

Unlike the party line, I don't want to have my high speed connection on all the time so I've rigged a power switch to turn it off. The reason I do this is because I've noticed that when I'm online, the computer runs a lot warmer. I've run rootkit checks on the system, but they all tell me it's clean. Every time I turn off the cable modem, I get an annoying popup in the tray that says: "Local Area Connection A network cable is unplugged." where "Local Area Connection" is simply the name of my hi-speed connection. I've unchecked the "Show icon in notification area when connected" option in the properties dialog for this connection, yet this VERY AN…

After installing a new Hard Drive and backup data following a crash, my start up page gives only the choice of a the Owner Account. My older user account with email settings, etc. can be used, but only after going to the account listed in Documents and Settings on my computer and then C Drive. How can I get my older user account moved to the new blue start page when booting up? Note: The computer shop used updated installation disks with SP2 when they installed the OS on the new disk drive.

Updates for Windows XP
by Guest Barry Karas- 5 replies

9:59 AM 9/9/2007 It takes extraordinarily long to manually update my computer. I do not want automatic updates -- I do not want unknown files being downloaded and installed on my computer. Because I do not choose automatic updates, I have to wait an exceptional time if I want to keep security current. Is there an alternative update site? If so, what is the maximum number of bytes that service provides? My browser is Firefox 2.006. Thank you, Barry Karas

Windowsxp - Backup
by Guest Abay- 5 replies

Hello, I normally back up all my data to an external hard drive, I have all the original cd's for programs and had assumed that if a disaster happens and I loose my hard drive and could recover all my data and re-install programs as I have done in the past when I switch computers. Now unfortunately one of my original cd's has cracked down one side, and cannot be read. My question: how can I do a full backup of my system so that I can still use the program on the cracked cd. Its something I should do anyway, but have not felt the need to do in the past. I checked the accessories thinking I would find something under System tools, but no such luck…

by Guest wrcandrews- 1 reply

I have several problems. The control panel is no longer available. Task manager is no longer available. I get a message that I must contact a system administrator. I own this computer and have always had administrative privelages. I can't reload Windows XP because the system has had many updates so the CD is now considered an older version. I am getting security alert messages and messages that it wants to redirect me to another web site. How do I regain control? -- WRA

Bad Motherboard?
by Guest MarkG- 8 replies

Many times over the last few days my cursor will start jumping around the screen when I try to move it. It disapears and then reapears making it hard to control. While this is happening, whatever I am working with slows down to less than a crawl. When I try to close the application, ie IE7, it takes many minutes for the action to take place, Also while this is going on the lights on my card readers E thru H blink on and off. This condition will eventualy go away if I wait long enuf. I cant pinpoint a common point when this all happens. So far it occurrs when I try to view a video clip on Youtube or similar site and when I empty the recycle bin. Here is what I am…

Using WindowsXP Home Edition/SP2. When I run WindowsXP System Tool Disk Defrag on my C:\ drive (where OS is installed) I get the message "Defrag Complete" \ "Some files on this volume could not be defragmented. Please check the Defragmentation Report for the list of these files" When I click on the REPORT, under "Files that did not Defragment" I see NO files listed. I have 2 Internal drives, the other drive just holds data (H:\). When I run Disk Defrag on the H:\drive, the results are; "Defragmentation Completed Successfully" which support the problem is not with the Disk Defragmenter. Things I have done: (1) I have run Defrag several times (2) H…

Display Properties - Desktop

I am not able to select pictures, nor browse on this tab. I had a problem with spyware, malware. Used spyware doctor to fix that problem. Also ran Viruscan which found nothing. I tried http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_w.htm and http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 142: Allow wallpaper/background changes. I still am unable to get anything but the color button to work on the desktop tab. The customize desktop button works, and have tried what others have suggested there. but to no effect. At startup I can see my old desktop picture there, but then as it continues to load, I get the color choice off the desktop tab.

Administrator question
by Guest Steve T- 7 replies

Related to above post of "won't boot again" but a separate question. I am the Administrator on a PC. I am the only user listed in the User Accounts. When I check on the Welcome screen it states that I am logged in as Administrator and yet when I try to run Guided Help in Auto mode for a "clean boot" I still get an error message that I do not have rights to change items in the System Configuration Utility and the Guide cannot continue. How many ways are there to logon as Administrator? When XP Home was initially setup, there was no specific Administrator name or password entered. I never had this problem before when I used msconfig to use Selective Startu…
