Explore is VERY Slow
by Guest Tom- 0 replies

I am running on an Acer Aspire 5000 with AMD Turion 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD formatted as NTFS and XP Pro. When I run Explore, it opens fine. But when I then try to expand the "C" drive to see more detail (folders, etc.), it takes about 30 seconds before it expands ( the hour glass displays during this time). Once it expands, I can collapse and expand it instantly. If I close Explore, however, and re-open it. The same problem occurs. Tom

I have a currently business program which only works in DOS which Win98SE can do. Is it possible to add a second hard drive with a different OS (win98se) and be able to choose which one to load at startup? This way I wouldn't have to reformat my current drive to partition it, which is running WinXP, and have to start over. Any thoughts?

by Guest Caroline- 0 replies

I use Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 and have just downloaded the classic version of Windows Live Hotmail. However, every time I now go into hotmail I have to change the encoding setting, from Unicode (UTF-8) to Western European (Windows) in order to be able to read the pages properly. Ticking Auto select makes no difference. I also have to do this when I move from one folder to the next. Any ideas? -- Caroline -- Caroline

I am unable to reinstall or update DirectX at all, which is increasingly becoming a hassle. According to the DXError log, it's because my cryptographic services isn't running. I can't enable them in my "services.msc". How do I fix my crypto service problem so that I can get DirectX to reinstall?

6 Ways to speed up Windows.
by Guest John- 16 replies

Hi, Just want to say, if you have some third party software to cleanup your hard drive, don't bother reading this. But, if you don't want to pay a company to do the hard work of cleaning your drive for you, consider reading this. A good way to start, is to clean up your disk. The more disk space you have, the faster your computer will run. Click on Start (Vista users click on the Windows Logo), click on run and type in "%temp%" without quotation marks. Click on OK. You will see lots (and I mean lots) of rubbish, just sitting there, with probably no point at all. Click on Edit, click on Select All, and hit 'DEL' on your keyboard. It deletes everything*.…

Hi, I am new to XP and just learn that there are at most 4 partitions (primary and extended) for the HD. I would like to know does it mean that does it mean at most there are 4 partitions in a physical HD or the whole system ? If it applies to the whole system, does it mean that at most we can have 4 physical HD ? Peter

Can't log on after running RegFix.
by Guest Randy Williams- 11 replies

In trying to solve another problem I ran RegFix 6.2 and allowed it to 'fix' several problems. This, naturally, created a bigger problem in that I can now no longer log on to Windows. When I turn on the computer I get a box that says "Please wait..." at the top with the Windows XP Professional logo in the bottom. Then I get a box that asks me to, "Log on to Windows." My name, the name of the computer, is in the Name box and then there is a place to type in a password. I have never given Windows a password that I need to get the OS going so I leave it blank and click "OK". This results in a little box with a red circle with a white "X" in it. What's next?…

1. If your name is Curt Christianson or 98 Guy, don't bother me. You were annoying enough when I posted 6 ways to speed up Windows. 2. Here is the main problem, and I want to put this short and simple. Your posts are automatically sent to different websites. WTF???
