I got a file with .iso, my first thought was this is an image file I need to burn using Nero as image. However, I can unzip using WinRAR. It seems cannot tell what this file is by looking at the file extension. Just wonder what would be burnt onto DVD if I use Nero to burn this using 'image' method?

Reinstall XP Home on Sony?
by Guest Mark \(MCP\)- 7 replies

I bought a Sony desktop computer about four to five years ago with Windows XP (no service packs) and now need to reinstall XP Home Edition on the desktop computer. I have heard from other Sony computer users that if I reinstall XP Home Edition on the desktop computer using Sony's DVD restore, that I will need to re-activate XP through Microsoft, which I need to pay for a reactivation license. This is due that XP's license with Sony or something like that is not Microsoft's clearinghouse database. To me, this doesn't make sense as the OEM version ties to the BIOS of the computer. Is this true? I haven't needed to reinstall XP on this computer from th…

Need help applying SP2 to OEM XP SP1
by Guest Jethro- 4 replies

I have a friend with a working system with WXP PRO OEM. She sent for and received a SP2 disk from MS. She can't seem to apply the update to SP2. After doing it, when she restarts machine, it hangs trying to display her desktop - forcing her to restore back to SP1 version. Makes me wonder.....It should be legit to do such an upgrade to an OEM version shouldn't it? If not, how can she do this? If so, what might her problem be? Thanks Jethro

In Device Manager, "Other Devices" there is a large yellow question mark beside "PCI Simple Communications Device." When I click it, It says I have a choice of "update driver" and when I explore further it appears that the device isn't working because there is no driver for it. Trying to update the driver doesn't work because I don't have one on any disk including the Windows installation disc. Where can I find the driver? Dave T.

I keep a small number of short video clips in a file. With thumbnail views, some show a picture from the clip in the thumbnail, some don't. There seems to be no difference in the file types concerned. About half the thumbnails are just black squares. Is there a reason, please?

Virus question...
by Guest Mike- 3 replies

I am trying to figure out why a computer won't boot to XP. After the POST messages, I just get a blank screen. After booting with a bootable NTFS cd, I see that the Windows directory is empty! Is there any type of virus that would/could have wiped out the contents of the windows directory? -- The intelligent man wins his battles with pointed words. I'm sorry -- I meant sticks. Hi, I connected a PC from workgroup to a domain. Its a big network and i am sure that there is no problem in the server side as we are using around 1000 PCs in a single domain. Also, the pc i connected in the domain is a new installed windows XP SP2. After connecting to a domain i tried to add a domain user in the administrators group in that PC through Local User and Groups by Right clicking the My Computer and clicking the Manage button. When i opened the Administrators group in the Local User and Groups and clicked add button, it shows only the local PC name in the Locations tab. When i clicked the Locations tab it is showing only the local PC name. …

----------------------------------------------------------------------- Feds OK Fee For Some Web Traffic WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Justice Department on Thursday said Internet service providers should be allowed to charge a fee for priority Web traffic. The agency told the Federal Communications Commission, which is reviewing high-speed Internet practices, that it is opposed to "Net neutrality," the principle that all Internet sites should be equally accessible to any Web user. Several phone and cable companies, such as AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp., have previously said they want the option to charge some users more money…

PC & iMac - the best of both worlds
by Guest Will- 1 reply

A week ago while my HP PC with MCE2004 was being repaired I tried out a 24" iMac along with USB attach MyTV.PVR for 1 week finding that only CanoScan 3000 would not work due to PC only software CD. Printer HP D4100 had install for both OS's on CD. The Bootcamp limit of 1 CD/DVD (also 2GB+ of physical memory) for PC OS install would not allow MCE2004 8 not SP2 CDs from HP though I have 1 DVD from HP setup/restore app. which does repair or reinstallation on PC. Also $299.99 waste of money Vista Ultimate (Upgrade?) single 32 or 64 bit DVDs. I have not heard that there is a "Bootcamp for PC" enabling Tiger now, Leopard when it is available on HP or other …

XP's incorrect USB hub report
by Guest kimiraikkonen- 4 replies
Hello, XP Pro SP2 and have no problems recognizing hubs, but i know / i'm sure as stated in my motherboard's user manual, i have 3 hubs x 2 ports each = total 6 USB ports (USB 2.0) But in device manager it reports 4 USB root hubs and under "power" tab power requirement of device is reported sometimes wrong. For example one day it shows my flash drive requires 200mA to operate, some day it says 100mA is enough. Also at the last root hub(forth one) it says i have 6 ports free (but still usb optical mouse is operating). I'm not quite sure but in device mangager hubs and power requirement report is wrong as i tested. Any comments? Thanks.
