I have been given a computer, custom made with a 1.8 pentium cpu, 30Gb and 80Gb hard drive, running an NIVIDIA AGP graphic card and Creative sound. I wanted to clear out all the old stuff on the drives and so decided tp clear both drives and reinstall Windows XP Home, which is what was on the computer when I got it. The computer came with the original Windows XP Home, Opeating Disk. I started the computer and changed the boot over to the CD drive and place the XP disk in the drive and restarted the computer. Everything went fine until it started loading the files. I got to the disk configure and removed the partician and reparticianed and formated to…

Advan/Disadvan of Compressing Files to Save Disk Space
by Guest frank1492- 11 replies

I have an old Dell Inspiron laptop with a 20GB hard drive. Since installing SP2, I only have about 700M left. I was thinking of compressing the files to save space which is a "check box" option in XP. (1) Does compression involve *any* data loss risk? (2) Overall, what are the advantages/disadvantages? (3) Any good free programs that can help me make the decision of what files I can safely delete? As usual. thanks very much for your advice! Frank

trouble using Windows Desktop Search - help
by Guest alice- 2 replies
I was prompted to down load the new Windows Desktop Search, and thought it would be good idea. Ooops. Now I can't seem to search my PC the way I used to. I set the whole C drive for indexing, and set it to but still, when I search on Documents for *.*doc, and set the folder to my folder where, in another folder window that I have open I can clearly see the doc files I have, it can't find anything. No results. Since this replaced the old search feature, I'm stuck with it unless- a) is there a way to restore the old XP search function or b) is there a way to get this one to work, meaning to actually search and find files on my hard drive?

Help Cleaning Out System Disk?
by Guest Rick489- 7 replies

I've been running XP Pro on the same machine for many years and have a bad case of "file creep." Every System Update, Installer execution etc. leaves behind a pile of trash. I know it's there to make "uninstallation" easy, but I'm happy with my system now. What is safe to delete? I'm thinking any folder named C:\Windows\$<anything>$\* as well as C:\Windows\Installer\*. Correct? Anything more? Thanks, Rick

XP in constant loop
by Guest owconway- 1 reply

Hi hope someone can help with this: I moved my harddrive from a P3 to a P4 system. System will do initial bootup, but gets to the message screen that states "apologizes for the inconvenience", makes the safe mode, saft mode with Networking, etc.... Last known good configuration and the starting Windows normally statement. I've tried all options offered with no success. I have attempted to repair the problem with fixmbr and fixboot, still no luck. I've checked the ram in another system, it runs fine. Frustration levels are going up a notch, anyone with an idea, please let me hear from you. Thanks

How do you delete a DVD drive listed in My Computer?
by Guest randwill- 3 replies
My system stopped recognizing one of my DVD drives and the other one only played DVDs and not CDs. So I disconnected both and hooked up each, but the results are the same. One doesn't play anything, the other only DVDs. So I disconnected both entirely, with the idea to start all over. However I can't get rid of the listing; Plextor DVD (E:) in My Computer. There are no DVD drives showing up in Device Manager. It doesn't show in Disc Management. I shut down for 5 minutes and even unplugged the power for another 5 minutes but when I rebooted, there was Plextor DVD (E:) still listed as being there. Do I need to get rid of that to start from scratch re…

I have a friend who runs a program called JAWS that reads the words from his active window to him. He is having a hard time dealing with windows explorer. He does not use the mouse at all and relies entirely on memorized commands. Are there more text based options with Windows XP, especially in terms of Windows Explorer?
