by Guest tuuf- 5 replies

I remember when you first install xp you are asked whether you want the administrator account to be hidden. My question is how to hide the default administrator account later on --- after the OS is already installed and running.

Win Explorer does NOT default to My Documents
by Guest chamois988- 7 replies
I've read many of the threads about changing the default folder when Win Explorer is opened to another folder. Presumably My Documents is the default, but in my case, it isn't!! I just got a new PC and it defaults to the Start Up folder. I know how to change the target link to the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents BUT I would prefer if it opened up at the very top, with the My Documents standard icon right underneath Desktop, instead of further down the tree under Local Disk>Document Settings>etc. Anyone know what to do?

What is this new "l2schemas" folder?
by Guest John Corliss- 6 replies
After I installed SP3 for XP (I'm running the Home Edition), I noticed a new folder: c:\windows\l2schemas My copy of Firefox 3 started doing weird things after a while (fields were the wrong size on websites like Google, so I couldn't enter search terms). After trying several other tactics (rebooting, reinstalling FF3, etc.) I backed up and deleted the l2schemas folder and the problems with FF3 went away. Then, I restored the folder, and strangely enough the problem didn't come back. I've looked and looked to find out what this l2schemas folder is supposed to be for, but can find absolutely NO information about it. I detest and hate not knowing what …

User file locations
by Guest JSD- 6 replies
First let me say that my computer knowledge is limited to spreadsheets and Word documents, with a general knowledge of other computer functions. I have Windows XP on my home computer that is used by my son, my wife and myself. My son accidentally deleted his login and account. I created a new one for him but now his files are located in "C:\Documents and Settings\Bobby.BOBBY\My Documents". Previously they were located in "C:\Documents and Settings\Bobby\My Documents". Is there some place where I can go to change the path back to the old one? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Uninstalling XP from Dual Boot System (Both XP) & mup.sys error
by Guest nmunafo- 5 replies
My friend's computer had an problem. He was unable to boot his XP SP2 system with any setting, his system hanging on mup.sys in Safe Mode. In an attempt to correct the problem, another friend installed another version of XP creating a dual boot of XPs. That installation worked just fine, but needs to be verified. We used that installation to remove all the old files from the PC. We tried all the fixes suggested for correcting a mup.sys error - disabling L1 & L2 cache, removing all PCI boards, etc... Tried the Repair Module - fixboot, fixmbr... None fixed the problem. However, while removing the personal files, we found that Windows Update seemed…

FIX: Post XP SP3 application, all updates fail to install
by Guest MowGreen [MVP]- 0 replies

After the application of SP3 all subsequent Automatic updates may fail to install. Also applies to a clean or a repair installation of XP: Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installation http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 Try Method 1 first. This *usually* resolves the update installation issue. If no joy, do Method 2, the installation of the latest Version of the Windows Update Agent [WUA], as laid out here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1172 MowGreen [MVP …

Multiple domains and distribution groups
by Guest Gregg Hill- 1 reply
Hello! I have two email domains handled by my SBS 2003 server, using ChooseFrom and SmartReply (both from August 2006) to take care of replies. It works great. I added a distribution group and sent a test message from my Yahoo account to the dist group address, then replied to it. It showed up in Yahoo as coming from my primary address, which is logical, because the dist group just sends to that address. My question is, can replies be set to come from the dist group's email address? That way, no matter who is in the group, the replies all go out from the group's address. Thank you for your time! windows explorer shows a non-existent cdrom
by Guest Peter Jam- 18 replies
Sorry to say I had this problem once before too long to remember how I fixed it exactly. My computer now has a 3rd CDROM and I believe it is caused by a USB Stick. XPProSP3 with 2 IDE CDROMS M:\ & R:\ and 2 SATA hard drives C:\ & D:\ so when I use a USB stick it always comes up as E:\. Well today the USB came up as F:\ so i looked in Windows Explorere and it shows a CDROM at E:\ also. Disk management doesn't show this 3rd CDROM. I have a suspicion it is caused by buggy USB info. Hoping someone has an inkling how to remove this ghost. -- Peter Jam Network System Administrator Lorch Microwave Inc

by Guest cavelamb himself- 10 replies

A few weeks back someone posted the proceedure for reassigning the drive letters for external drives for another requester. It worked great, BTW. I used that to readdign all my USB hard drives to a more logical layout (rather that it being detern\mined by the order in which they were purchased.
