WinXP SP2 (up to date with Win Update) I have a problem where a third party device when plugged into a USB port becomes accessible via a drive letter it creates and the drive letter conflicts with an existing drive letter. My PC has one HDD in three partitions and there is a CD drive. So the drive letters are C:, D:, E: & F: I use the following batch file at start up echo on subst H: D:\ subst J: D:\data subst K: "D:\DATA\Acquire Home Services" subst L: D:\DATA\Paradox subst M: "D:\DATA\WP9 App data" subst N: "C:\Documents and Settings\Office\Application Data\Corel\PerfectExpert\9\Custom WP Templates" Pause exit When the device is plugge…

Show Desktop Icon
by Guest PeeDee- 1 reply
I have inadvertently discarded the icon-and related action-that allows me to return to/open my Desktop using the icon on my Quick Launch taskbar. I have substituted a shortcut icon, but it opens the window-list of the Desktop items and I'd prefer to return to the overall Desktop itself. Any suggestions as to how the missing icon and target can be recovered? Thanks

Help! I was playing a computer game when I accidently hit a couple of keys and my monitor image flipped sideways! As I type this I have to keep turning my head to the side. I tried restarting the computer and I tried system restore, but it said the system restore was not completed because none of the settings on my computer had been changed since the last restore point. I don't know how to get it back to normal. Please help me, my neck is really stsrting to cramp!

How does WDS display the pathname (location on windows explorer) column. When I right-click on the header row that is NOT one of the selectable columns. Seems that would be one of the most important. There are many selectable columns but not that. Am I overlooking something.

ntuser.dat error - Outlook Express startup
by Guest MJK050- 6 replies
I recently purchased a used PC. I reconfigured Outlook Express for my use but I must've screwed it up. When I double click on Express, it comes up with an error: "Cannot delete ntuser.dat: It is being used by another person or program". I am the only user. Express works fine after the OK is pressed to acknowledge the error, however some advanced functions don't work, like the ability to read messages archived from my old PC.

by Guest Eric- 9 replies

Does anyone have any suggestions? On my motherboard, there are 4 slots for DDR RAM, at this moment, I get 2 x 512 MB DDR RAM, and would like to add 1GB DDR RAM more, then totally I get 2 GB DDR RAM. Does anyone have any suggestions whether I should add 2 x 512 MB DDR RAM to fill all 4 slots or I should add a single 1 GB DDR RAM? Which approach is better for memory? Thanks in advance for any suggestions Eric

Running a Japanese program on a English version of XP
by Guest Shiniman- 0 replies

Hi, I've have been trying to install a Japanese game on my PC. Almost the whole installation goes without problems until the installer tries to read an .txt file which is in Japanese and Windows can't read it so I have to abort the installation. I've installed the files for East Asian languages. The thing is I still can't read the .txt (it does in Word), also there is a guy in my MSN list which has Japanese kanji in his name which I don't see 9.5 out of 10 times. When I try to select 'Japanese' as language for non-unicode programs I get the error "Setup was unable to install the chosen locale. Please contact your system administrator". I'm the admin on…

Cannot run cmd.exe
by Guest Jikun- 12 replies

I have a Dell-8300 desktop with Windows XP Pro. The last time I was able to run cmd.exe was about a month ago. Today I found that I cannot run cmd.exe no matter where I tried it (I tried to use Run and to double click the file under c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe). In both cases I got the message "Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cmd.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click Search". I replaced the cmd.exe from my backup disc but it didn't help. I tried to copy and run the files at different locations, it did not help. I later found out the same goes with regedit an…

HELP! - XP (sp2) causes LOUD beep.
by Guest crab.dae@gmail.com- 6 replies

I was just assigned a new laptop from the office, a Dell Latitude D620. Everything works fine on it except when I put this thing into stand by, it beeps. It's a not soft beep, but a super loud and long nasty beep. Sounds like a system beep, but much louder. Other then the BEEP, standby and everything else seems to work fine. I've checked with my our help desk and they say it's normal with these new Dell D620's. I can't believe that. Someone, please help me turn this beep off.... Thanks!

Animated cursor bigger than 32x32?
by Guest ShaggyMoose- 1 reply

Is it possible to create and use an animated cursor bigger than 32x32 pixels in Windows XP? I have used a number of tools to create ANI files with dimensions of 48x48 and 64x64 and they look fine. However, when I select them as a cursor the size is always reduced to 32x32. Is this an OS limitation, or am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

Computer acting funny
by Guest Atira- 6 replies

I don not know much about how computers work and I even asked the IT guy at work and he was clueless. About a week ago my computer started to not load the internet completely. The internet page came in with no logos, just the text and boxes where the pictures should be. By the way, I should mention that I had a hard drive problem back in May and my IT guy at work replaced it for me with a new one and cleaned up the desktop and such. So, there is hardly anything on my desktop and it had been running fine since then. So, now when I clicked the internet either it does what I mentioned above or displays a message: not enough data to complete the action. Or the another…
