by Guest GW- 4 replies

I have lost all sound twice now in the last two months. I did the fix below both times and it worked. Does anyone know why I have to keep doing this? Thanks On the System Properties panel, Advanced tab, Environment Variables button, under the User variables click New and create a variable named devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices with the value of 1. Open the Device Manager and select Show hidden devices from the View menu. Under the Sound, video and game controllers group, find your sound card(s) and disable it/them (don’t need to uninstall). Then uninstall the following devices: Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device Micr…

Remote Desktop Looses Input Focus
by Guest BrianS- 0 replies

I am using Remote Desktop from work to connect to Outlook on my home computer. The connection is good with one exception. I keep loosing input focus on the e-mail I have selected. When I click on an e-mail, it turns blue, indicating that the item is selected and the application is active. With no warning, the selected item turns grey, indicating that the item is still selected, but that the application is no longer inactive. For the first 10-15 minutes of the RDT session, the selected item alternates between blue and grey. The same thing happens when typing new messages. While typing, the curser will disappear and the remote applilcation will loose whateve…

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) - Do logs exist?
by Guest Dups- 0 replies

Hello everyone. I have a workstation that have Windows XP Professional installed. It has SP2. I have one colleague that uses the workstation and he will often get a DEP error when using Internet Explorer. I was wondering if there were logs or something that I can look into to find out what is causing these DEP errors. The odd thing is that I have other users that use the same workstation with a different profile. They use the same monitoring tools on IE to do their job but they never get DEP errors. They all have admin rights with their profiles. The version of IE is 6.0.2900. If any additional information is needed let me know.

Windows Time Service Icon Missing
by Guest mcp6453- 1 reply

The "Windows Time" service is not listed among the services in services.msc. When I could not get Windows Update to run because of a time problem, I went through all of the steps at http://channel9.msdn.com/rss.aspx?threadID=300216. (Update Now on the Internet Time tab would spit out an error.) Now, it appears that everything time is properly working, but the entry for "Windows Time" is still missing. How can I get it back?

couple questions Machine is 4 years old. Want to get a new hd, (in case). Mine is a 60g. The new ones are larger than that and cheap. Somewhere on this thing there is information about if it is 16, 32, etc. bit which seems to determine the hd makeup. Where is it hidden? What else do I need to know? Will probably just clone the old to the new and make it primary but I would consider starting it off clean with my original cd of XP Pro. How much crap does M$ give to activate it?

Device Manager Error
by Guest smohsinahmad- 3 replies

Hi. I was installing my palmOne. I mistakenly added a device which is displayed as Unknown Device in the Device Manager. Infact, I have two Unknown devices under Palm OS Handheld category. Now, when I try to uninstall these two, I get the error "Windows could not load the installer for {................. a long alphanumeric code...............}. Contact your Hardware vendor for assistance". OK so I know since these devices do not exist, there wont be installers etc for these devices. The thing is that I cannot make these devices go from the Device Manager and everytime my pc starts, so does the hardware wizard which prompts to install these…

Does anyone have any suggestions on what applications support mult-processors under XP? such as Microsoft Office. On current market, 1 core CPU contains 4 CPUs, but what kind of applications will support running mult-processors in order to maximize the usage of CPU resource. Does anyone have any suggestions why not build a single faster CPU rather than a core CPU containing 4 CPUs? Thank you for any suggestions Eric

User Accounts / My Documents
by Guest FPS, Romney- 0 replies

Is each user account supposed to have its own private My Documents folder? I thought this was the case, but when I created a new user account, it displayed the same files in My Documents and had the same privileges to those files as the original user account. Also, the other computers in our office have a certain drive letter mapped to a shared folder on a WinXP computer. Mapping of the drive letter required supplying the username and password of the computer with the shared folder. If a different user account is opened on the WinXP computer, the mapped drive letter is no longer connected on the other computers (different username and password operating now on …
