what's the story with the FAT32, 32GB limit ?
by Guest jameshanley39@yahoo.co.uk- 8 replies

http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm i 've heard that when running an OS , or some OSs, like win xp, from that partition, there can be problems if the capacity is > 32GB I never ran into any problems, but I went to NTFS anyway. But what are the problems, and why ? Or is there reason to believe there are no problems, and it's a myth ? Note: if no OS is on there, e.g. it's just for data, then i don't think the 32GB thing is an issue. i think win xp or an early edition of it didn't let you format a fat32 partition > 32GB or something. I recall a mueller video showing him resizing it with Partition Magic. (next, the 137gb limit ;-) ! )

Missing Operating System - is the disk dead ??
by Guest Howie- 1 reply

One of our computers shows the following message after the bios screen Missing Operating System The user had installed Norton Systemworks and he said that before the error occured there was a Norton Disk Doctor message about "partitions or something like that", his words not mine ! He clicked on ok to fix the problem. As the user has not backed up recently I need to get some files off it. I've tried the XP recovery console but it cannot find a disk, even after loading the drivers from a floppy. I've put the disc in another computer as a slave, but when I try opening it I get "this disk is not formatted, format it now?" Can I get into this disk or i…

static Page File Size not working
by Guest corymk@gmail.com- 9 replies

I am running a computer with one 1024 MB of PC333 Memory. I have always been told and been in the habit of setting up the page file size as twice what the memory is for the Initial and the Maximum settings. I statically setup the Initial and the Maximum to 2048 and clicked set. The computer notifies me that it will need to reboot in order to make the setting change stay. I reboot the computer and it makes absolutely no difference. The Microsoft Recommended Page File Size is 1533 and it somehow allocates 1534 every time no matter what you set in the Initial and Maximum sizes. I have set the size smaller than 1534 and bigger than 1534 and it always defaults t…

Windows copy to CD fails
by Guest General Mailbox- 3 replies

Greetings, I have attempted about 4 times to copy folders onto a CDRW. 1st event: Placed unformatted CDRW and system says there's no CD in the drive. I tried 2 other CDRW's in case of being defective. I used another utility to format it. 2nd event: It worked. On a 650MB CDRW, I placed about 250MB data. 3rd event: I wanted to add another 300MB to the same successful disk in #2 event. Everything acted normal, the lights were blinking on the tower and CD drive. After 15 mins, it completed and ejected the CD. However, only the 1st session shows as being on the CD. No signs of the 2nd session. 4th event: Did a quick format of CDRW, using a 3rd party utility, a…

I chose "repair" but XP "re-installed"
by Guest kimiraikkonen- 6 replies

I've been using Windows 2000 for a long time which is more bug-free but i beleive that i haven't made a mistake to repair my current XP installation due to a problem about Outlook Express. I booted CD normally, then proceeded to available OS list, OK so far, then clicked "R" to repair current-existing XP but then setup started to copy files, not over, then proceeded to standard installation screens including "key entry" , windows component registration and it re-installed my stable drivers with crappy Microsoft's drivers!!! I haven't repaired an XP installation till today, but i beleive that's not a "repair". Am i wrong or what's XP repair called? Thanks f…

Keeps asking for password.
by Guest Doug- 0 replies

I have just moved an XP pro machine from a domain. I did that by changing it to a workgroup and by changing the way users log on to use the Welcome screen, rather than Ctrl-Alt-Del. However, the PC seems to have remembered the old screen saver settings. The screen saver is now set to NOT require a password on resume. However, if the PC gets to the screen saver, after moving the mouse, it comes up with a message that only the user or an admin istrator can unlock. However the keyboard is inactive. It is impossible to enter a password. How do I fix? -- Doug

Network based menus really slow.
by Guest cjohnsonuk- 0 replies

We are a school with 600+ PCs. Start menus are stored on the network and a group policy is used on the user containers in the AD to redirect the XP workstations to fetch their menus from a server. However it is really slow. The menus contain links to software installed locally and to software installed on the network. I'm assuming every time someone clicks "start|programs" the PC goes off and searches every exe for the icons required. There may be a much better way of doing this. We considered mandatory profiles but under XP they delete on log out so this means our staff that use laptops can't use their profiles offline as they won't exist. My propose…

Peculiar File Access Problem
by Guest marc- 0 replies

After installing the MSDN library, I added a desktop shortcut which (tries to) start MSDN by using the hh.exe file to open the msdn.col file. The col file extension is associated with hh.exe. But, when I run the shortcut, I get the following message (title: C:\Windows\hh.exe): 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them.' However, I am logged on as administrator! Also, I can start MSDN by opening the target file (MSDN.col) if I right click on it and choose hh.exe from the Open With menu. Any ideas why it won't open from the shortcut but will from OpenWith. tia Marc

Network Topology
by Guest Jackson Brown- 7 replies

I have a small network that accomodates Vista & XP machines. I'm using an 8 port Netgear gigabit switch between the machines (which all have gigabit NICs) and a Linksys BEFSR41 router for internet access and firewall protection. I just replaced the Linksys router, so it is a recent revision (I haven't upgraded the firmware on it yet). Connecting the machines, switch and router is CAT5 cable. Question: Are the CAT 5 cables introducing a bottleneck into the network? Are there any settings for the router that could be changed to produce higher speeds over the network and internet? I'm on a cable connection. Thanks!
