Random processes stealing 50% CPU
by Guest Adrian Marsh- 11 replies

Hi, I've a problem on my XP Pro setup that I can't locate, and am looking for ideas... For some reason, seemingly random time-wise, one process on my Desktop suddenly shoots up to 50% CPU. Each time the process is different.. I've seen: firefox.exe rundll32.exe (often) explorer.exe googledesktop.exe (nvidia something..) Happens now at least twice a day. When I kill the offending process, quite often, a completely unrelated process takes over that 50%. I kill that, and it moves on again to yet another random process. The only way to beat it seems to be to reboot, until it happens again. Process Explorer shows memory is ok. No faults anywhe…

I have recently started having this problem on my Dell computer running WIN XP SP2. The problem is as follows: I get bored and decide to leave my computer, so I put it into sleep mode via the sleep button on my keyboard (looks like a crescent moon). I go get lunch, watch TV, whatever, and decide to come back and use my computer. I press a key on the keyboard or disturb my laser mouse, which causes the hard drives to spin up (I hear whirling of drives and the fans kick back on). Then it sits for a moment until I get the BSOD :( Following the BSOD about inpage_data_error or something (I misplaced the exact stop error), I power down, power up, and find…

Folder View error
by Guest Zeretul1- 0 replies

I have noticed recently that although I have my folder organization set to Name (alphabetical), when I open the "Open" dialog box in programs and set them to view my folder, they are set in "Modified" (by date) view. The folder is a non-C: drive holding data. My current view is List, and the explorer window itself displays the files in Name order. I recently deleted some hidden files I thought associated with a folder "tweaking" program (change color, background, etc.) do to an unsatisfactory result and noticable folder lag, and now I have encountered this problem. Prior to deleting the files, I did have the folder set to "Modified" by earliest to late…

Hi, Thanks in advance for the opportunity to ask for assistance. When I repaired XP sp2 after a problem with Trend MicroCillin 2007 the Windows installer started to play up. I ended up uninstalling MS office 2003 after having installer popping up every time I tried to open Office progs. When I tried to reinstall MSO 03 but got the following error message: 'Error 1311 source file not found c:\msocache\allusers\90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9\E3561406.cab' I tried Windows install cleanup to remove the installer problem then installed Windows Installer 3.1 also tried a full file upgrade of Office sp3. Only got 'patch could not be installed errors'. Then …

Microsoft keyboard
by Guest DonnaR- 1 reply

Sorry for posting this in the wrong place, but I just purchased a new wireless keyboard & mouse combo today, and I am getting an error when I try to install it. The error reads: Setup cannot continue becasue either there is insufficient free hard disk space, or an unexpected error has occurred. Please free the necessary disk space and run setup again. For system requirements, refer to the product packaging. I have looked at the box, and I need 60MB of hard disk space. I have 53GB so space is not the problem. WHere can I look for keyboard help? Thanks, Donna

Windows XP Software Installation Question
by Guest Tariq- 2 replies

Folks- I hope all is well. This is a question for Windows XP gurus. I am setting up desktop environment for my company, and I was wondering if it is possible to allow my end users (who are member of domain users group) to install company's approved software from some central distribution point by using their domain user account without giving them any administrative rights on their workstation? Is there any third party utility available? I am setting up a small environment, and I cannot afford to invest in SMS or other tools to deploy packages. I just want simple solution that will allow my users to install only company approved software without havin…
