RE: ** DVD / CD-ROM drive disappeared ** >"I looked under device manager and it does show there. > So again, nothing showing under My Computer, nothing > in Device Manager/Disk Drives. So, which is it?.. does it show or not show in the Device Manager... If the drive disappeared from both My Computer and from the Device Manager: Just go to the Device Manager, select the CD/DVD drive with a right click and select "Uninstall".. and still in the Device Manager, right click on the computer name and click on Search for new hardware.. The CD/DVD Rom should be auto-reinstalled with the system drivers. If after that, you are still having trouble, go to…

USB autorun.inf - auto-open website without being prompted
by Guest nicoqhj@gmail.com- 2 replies

Hi. I'm trying to auto-open a web site when plugging in a USB drive. (My actual question is at the bottom.) My autorun.inf file currently looks like this: [autorun] open=example.bat action=www.example.com Where example.bat contains this line: "Start http://www.example.com" This is all good, but the user gets prompted before example.bat executes. I managed to bypass this by the following entries: [autorun] open=example.bat shell\open\command=example.bat useautoplay=1 In this example, using Windows XP, example.bat gets executed without asking the user. In Vista however, the user still gets prompted. My question: Is there _any_ way of making a w…

question about IE Temporary Internet Files
by Guest Tim.T- 2 replies

I use Firefox 3 and hardly EVER use Internet Explorer. So I don't understand why, no matter how infrequently I use IE, I find megabytes of files stored in the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder during a disk cleanup. The last time it happened I found 38mb of files, despite the fact that in the previous internet sessions I didn't use IE once. Maybe I'm stupid, but I thought a browser only downloads files from sites you're actually browsing; when I check these files I don't recognise any of them. A lot of them are 0kb in size, have weird names and filetypes like "Status[number].3-digit number". An example: "Status[4].017". As I recall, Firefox organises its ca…

Dragging and dropping on Data drive corrupts metadata
by Guest Andy Dutton- 1 reply

Hi, I've a Hp Pavillion dv8000, with 49GB C: drive and 50GB D: drive. I've recently found that if I move (drag and drop or cut and paste) files within the D: drive something gets corrupted and I'm able to access or delete the folders ("Access is Denied") or open the files. This affects all users, and all types of file (all of which loose their applications specific info too: e.g. photo's loose "date taken" and "domenstions", Word files loose the "Author" information). However the file size and type and date modified information remains in tact. Moving files within the C: drive or between C: and D: drives is OK, the only problem is within the D: dr…

Try Tweak UI to recall the drive letter. Download the application from the next link, install it and on My Computer\Drives\right pane, select the C check box. Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx OR... Open a command prompt window (Start\All Programs\Accesories\Command Prompt) In the command window: Type: DISKPART Next to DISKPART> type; "LIST VOLUME" and hit Enter A list of volumes or drives appears with volume number and letter (or probably no letter on the system drive in your case)... Next to DISKPART> type: "SELECT VOLUME #" (the number that corresponds to the s…

Problem Description: I recently purchased some new software and I need .net framework V2.0.50727 loaded on my computer in order to utilize the software. I currently have V1.1.4322 .net framework (think it loaded a long time ago to support MS Windows Messenger Live). I have installed the newer version of net and am then able to access the new software. However, it hoses up my MS Outlook (MS Office Sm Biz Edition 2003) meaning it will not open and it gives me an error message that says there is a problem with the Business Contacts Mgr - it goes through the diagnostics to fix it and then asks me if I want to open Outlook in Safe mode - when I select yes (o…

Why don't Microsoft allow us to downgrade our OS?
by Guest NotHappy_MSarePOO- 11 replies

Well its all in the title really. Why on earth do MS insist upon gining us the message telling us that we have a newer version of windows installed and then wont let us downgrage? I'm not a muppet, i know that XP is older than Vista, however it is better than vista. All i want to do is downgrade and it appears that you have to be a grade A boffin to get around this. Also to get real support from the money grabbing empire you have to pay £56, WHY? We had to pay lots for this OS, or pay hundreds more than a new PC is worth. Maybe Apple are better, I am thinking of getting a Mac, even though the very thought makes me want to cry. Why do Microsoft have to rui…
