Please help me with this. aka/Pappion "Its not what we say mean, its what we mean to say...(unknown)"

Unable to install devices
by Guest Ian- 7 replies

I have tried two MP3 players on my XP today and neither will work. The Ipod could not find any device drivers through I tunes and the Wharfedale replacement couldn't either using it's setup disc. The latter is supposed to appear in my computer as a removable drive which it doesn't. In device manager, the device has a question mark and when I try to install the driver manually using the disc, it still states it cannot find a driver for the specified device. The driver status says: The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) I run 2.0 speed USBs which are very loaded it has to be said (everything needs a USB these days!) and I have tried…

Windows XP Restore - restoring user names
by Guest evestigatus- 1 reply
I had a corrupt OS and had to restore my Windows XP. When I rebooted it came back to a default user name. I can still access all of the files for all of the previous users but I can't figure out how to restore our old user names and get all of the settings back. When I try, it creates a new user name with a .PC extension. This is especially troubling with MS Outlook because I don't know how to get to all of our old email, calendar, task, and address book data. Anyone out there know what to do to get this back to the way it used to be?

Program icons missing on Desktop, Start Menu
by Guest Peter A- 1 reply

I have suddenly lost the program icons on the "most frequently used" part of the Start menu and also a few program icons on the Desktop. The shortcuts are still there but they display the generic "Window" icon instead of the program's icon. Icons on the "All Programs" part of the start menu have not been affected. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks. Windows XP Pro, latest service pack -- Peter Aitken

How do I tell WinXP which connection to use for the internet?
by Guest Frank328- 2 replies

Hi, I have a computer in the lab which connects to spectrometer using the ethernet adapter on a static IP. (I didn't design the system, that's just the way it is). This same computer has a wireless card that connects to the wireless network in said lab. Now, how do I tell WinXP to use the wireless connection to go online, and use the wired connection for the spectrometer? Right now the PC assumes that the wired connection is the primary one so I can connect to the equipment but not internet (a real PITA when you need to access online databases). The only way around so far is to disable the wired connection when we have to go online, then re-e…

Duplicate files on desktop
by Guest Stiggy64- 1 reply

I was trying to clean-up my computer and removing duplicate files and trying to copy files. Somehow while in documents and settings somewhere I copied a ton of files and moved them. I am not sure what I did or where I put the files but now whenever I put a file on the desktop I get two of them showing. If I delete one the other one stays there even though I can no longer access the file. If I hit F5 it will disappear. Can anyone help me restructure my files? HELP.

My thumbnails do not match my pictures
by Guest Klatu's Wife- 2 replies

The index is apparently out of sync in one of my subfolders under My Pictures. The thumbnail does not match the file name. How did it get that way and what can I do to fix it without losing all my pictures? I am a serious scrapbooker and these are important pictures for me. Their file names don't describe the pictures very well and I'm stumbling around trying to find what goes with what. Any help will be grately appreciated. Thanks

Matrox Graphics card Compatability
by Guest Traderman- 2 replies

I have a compatability problem with a Matrox Graphics card. When I install it on my computer (not this one), I can not access the internet, and the card does not work properly. The Customer service people at Matrox have given me this reply --------------------------------------------------------- "There is a compatibility issue between Windows Service Pack 2 and the PCIe root hub when using a PCI video card that has a bridge. If you look in the device manager you will probably see a yellow ! warning on the root hub. This means that Windows (SP2) thinks that the bridge on the PCi display adapter is the root hub and will not see any other devices that are…
