Start menu
by Guest Stephen- 1 reply

The Start menu contains shortcuts to the most recently used programs. A while ago I was doing some unusual work and I used some rarely-used programs quite often over a short period, so they appeared on this part of the Start menu. Afterwards (about 10 days ago), when I reverted to a more typical mode of work, I cleared this menu in an effort to 'start again'. I thought that it would repopulate with each program I then used. However, repopulation has been sporadic (to say the least). The list is now quite short with lots of 'white space' below it. (I have the number of programs set to 15, but only 5 have appeared.) Hello! Does Windows XP SP2 support burning files to DVDRs/DVDRWs? Or is it only for CDR/RWs? If not, then what's the best freeware addon/programs to do burning files? Backup and HD cloning
by Guest davdun75- 11 replies

I have backed up both my HD entirely, to a third physical drive - I'm not sure this is what I want... is there software that will clone my boot drive to a different physical drive, and then automatically write to that second "backup" drive (as well as the primary boot drive) during normal operation; in the event my boot drive fails, I figure I could restore the system simply by setting up the "backup" drive as the boot drive?

by Guest Singaporeslingking- 6 replies

I have just replaced my single AMD processor with an AMD X64 dual core. Then ran windows update (Windows XP professional 32 bit version) and installed recommended upgrades. I'm now getting blue screens which appear to be due to USB drivers. Motherboard is ASUS A8V-VM (socket 939). Should I be using 32 bit or 64 bit drivers ? Greatful for any help ! -- Robert Hamilton Singaporeslingking

Disabling AutoPlay
by Guest Rich Pasco- 8 replies

Every time I attach an external hard disk, my Windows XP system spends a long time rummaging through all of its folders searching for various media file. How can I prevent it from doing this? I already opened on "My Computer", right-clicked on my drive and chose Properties. On the tab AutoPlay, for each class of file (Music, Pictures, Video, Mixed), I chose "Take No Action". But that doesn't stop XP from rummaging throuh all my files each time I connect the external drive. - Rich

I have had DRM foul up my computer. I am a 74 year old male, and I am a volunteer driver for the red cross. I had no idea making spare coppies to take on my blood runs was illegal. I have since completely dumped all music from my computer. However the damage remains. I can't even format my disk. The question is: Does anyone know who I can contact to get drm off my back?

Low DOS duty cycle in Windows XP
by Guest PSRumbagh- 3 replies

Using the freeware program DIRECTIO.EXE (http://www.direct-io.com) I got my Quatech SPP-100 PCMCIA to parallel port (IEEE-1284) card to write from the DOS version of Quick Basic V4.5 running in the DOS emulation window of Windows XP Home edition. The output was supposed to be continuous writes but was actually only writing for 0.15 mS every 12 mS for a duty cycle of only 1.25%. Also, the output showed a lot of time jitter in the 12 mS repetition rate. Is there any way for my QB program to obtain 100% duty cycle and suppress the background activity of WinXP while the QB program is running?

Can't Delete Program
by Guest rogeepete- 7 replies
A friend's laptop has been infected with a program called Contravirus2.0 that I cannot delete via Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, etc. After doing the uninstall, the program automatically comes back, popping up. I have deleted the desktop icon (I know this does not remove the program) and this comes back too. The program asks for $29 - I think if this is paid, the program might go away...just might. Thanks for any help to get rid of this annoying thing. Roger -- Roger

No Internet After Resuming From Standby
by Guest ÐïÅßö¥ø§©- 11 replies

For some reason after I resume from standby mode my Internet connection is always dead. The "limited or no connectivity" notice pops up and nothing requiring an Internet connection has access. I am forced to reboot to get it to work again. So I've started to have to either leave the computer on or completely shut it off. Does anyone know anything about the possible reasons for this and how to fix it?
