* * *Updated * * * Well - it went a few days before it pulled this S**T again this afternoon. I am stumped. Boot. ini looks unremarkable, Malware scan was clean. No viruses detected . However, I did go to a U.S.Govt webpage (twilight zone theme) Chkdsk /f fixed three more entries in the Journal. I'm wondering if this is an indication of power suppy failure, or the drive controller (on Motherboard) could be stuffed. I am trying to conduct a file audit of all the files and folders in my work shared drive in an attempt to reduce file/folder redundancy , it would be a lot easier if i could get a list of the results from a 'find everything' search of the folder i am interested in. Is this possible?

When this pc goes into standby according to my power settings or when I push the standby button on the keyboard a window pops up, tells me the the driver for my NEC DVD RW 3520 is preventing entry into standby. I have DL'd new driver from NEC and installed it. I have uninstalled the drive and reinstalled it. I have done this procedure several times without helping the situation. What can I do short of shutting the drive down? XP Pro SP2 -- none

Cannot find server
by Guest Curt Christianson- 0 replies

I'm wondering if it's just me, or if anyone else has a problem reaching a particular page at MajorGeeks. It's: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads6.html The page appears to almost completely load, and then a Windows box pops up saying "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads6.html . Operation aborted". When I click OK to close this box, the page reverts to a "Page cannot be displayed" one. I've had this happen on two different computers. XP SP2, IE6 SP2, all patches current. -- HTH, Curt Windows Support Center http://www.aumha.org Practically Nerded,... http://dundats.mvps.org/Index.htm

Reinstall Win XP Home on computer with two Hard Drivew
by Guest jckelley- 3 replies

I am trying to reinstall Win XP because of viruses and other problems. I got a "new" HD (bought a used one off of a friend) and it is now the "D" drive. I backed all of my files onto the D drive, I am now in the middle of a complete reinstall of Win XP on the C drive. The screen now say "Setup will install Windows XP on partition D: Partition1 (New Volume) [NTFS]" So now my questions: 1) Does this mean that Setup is tryign to install onto D? 2) Will choosing the "Format the partition" option erase all of my files on the D drive? 3) What shodul I do? Thanks!

How can I count files in sub-folders?
by Guest Paul H- 3 replies
I have a folder with 2 or more levels of sub-folders. I want to automatically produce a text file that contains the names of all of the files in each sub-folder. Can I do this without writing a program - maybe just using a BAT file with DOS commands? Any suggestions would be appreciated. And I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this question. TIA, Paul

Safe Mode won't run
by Guest Panic- 10 replies

I have Win XP SP2 that is working fine. For some reason I can no longer boot into Safe mode. I click on F8, choose Safe Mode and it shows devices loading, then the Starting Windows comes up with a large mouse cursor the way it does in Safe Mode, then the screen shows black with the Safe Mode legend showing at top and bottom but then it stops and does a reboot. Of course if I allow the reboot to continue without interference it boots into normal Win XP mode. A few days ago a Safe Mode boot stopped before it completed due to a power outage. Perhaps this screwed up my capability to boot into Safe Mode? Darrell R. Schmidt B-58 Hustler Web Site http:…

Files and Settings Transfer Bombs Out
by Guest Brian- 6 replies
I had a need to re-format my hard drive and reinstal Windows XP. I used the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and placed that information on another hard drive. After formatting and reinstalling XP I downloaded all the available updates and then attempted to get my files and settings back. Doesn't work. The facility bombs out with a message that the files I created were done so with an earlier version of Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and as such I can't access that information. This seems strange as the only difference between what I had and what I have is a small number of later system updates. Is there a way around this? Cheers
