SAM error
by Guest tros2112- 0 replies

I have a PC on our network that is getting Error 12288: SAM failed to write changes to the database. This is most likely due to a memory or disk-space shortage. The SAM database will be restored to an earlier state. Recent changes will be lost. Check the disk-space available and maximum pagefile size setting. But the pagefile size is set to let the system set it and she has PLENTY of drive space. She does work with rather large files. Neither HD is fragmented. The PC is set to come on around 6 am. She logs in around 8 am, and that's when the error is logged. Thanks in advance.

Could someone tell me if it's safe to search for all instances of desktop.ini and remove them? If the side-effects of this include resetting all the folder views, I don't mind one bit. Thanks.

Event 6009 not logged from a reboot
by Guest will- 0 replies
Hi, There is a KB Article ID: 196452 that says Event 6009 is logged during every boot and indicates the operating system version, build number, service pack level, and other pertinent information about the system. Depending on your current configuration, it gives a message similar to: "Microsoft ® Windows NT 4.0 1381 Service Pack 6 Multiprocessor free". However, There were instances that Event 6009 is not logged even the machine is rebooted. What could be the possible reasons this event is not recorded to determine that the machine is rebooted? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

by Guest churin- 0 replies

My problem is that the Scanner and Camera Wizard no longer works as it once did. If a SD memory with picture files in it is inserted to a USB adapter then a dialogue is popped up. I click on "Copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard" and OK. Then the Wizard is launched. Then NEXT, select pictures to save, NEXT. At this point The Wizard shows two field, 1. Type a name for this group of pictures and 2. Choose a place to save this group of picture. The problem happens from here on: It once was that if I enter the first field then the same name sub-folder is automatically created and is shown in the second field. …

Windows will not install

A friend of mine asked me to build a system for him. This was using an ASUS A8N-E motherboard - 1gb Ram and 500gb SATA HD. This I built and installed XP Pro + SP2. All ran well and handed over to him the system. All has been well for about 3 months and he called me up to say that the PC would no longer boot into XP. Knowing his internet and PC activity, this did not surprise me as he is always downloading games and apps, so I suspected that he had corrupted the file system or the MBR. Anyway I played around with it but with no success so I called him to say that I would need to re- install XP. I loaded the CD, set-up ran, ran a full NTFS format. Then XP loa…

My e-machines computer died. I bought a new MB, P4, case.... but not a new HD. When I turn the computer on it begins to boot to XP Pro and then it kicks out to the "were are sorry for the inconvenienece but blah blah blah" it gives me the 3 options to safe mode, command prompt....." But for soem reason my keyboard will not work (none of the keys). It will work in the bios but as soon as it begins to boot to OS no good. I've replaced the IDE cables, unplugged and replugged in everything with no luck. I'm thinking bad HD (boot sector?). Thanks for any ideas you may have, C

Merging "Data" folders into "Favorites"?
by Guest (PeteCresswell)- 2 replies

I've always kept my data separate in a "Data" folder on D:. Right now, within "Data" I've got my Windows "Favorites" folder - the one that renders with a five-pointed star. It's finally dawned on me that, to me, "Favorites" are really "Data" - and all the subdirectories in "Favorites" really belong in "Data". E.g. Right now in "Data", I've got a directory called "Generators" that contains a couple of .PDFs about home-use generators. But I've also got a "Data\Favorites\Generators" folder that contains links to various web pages concerning home-use generators. Clearly (to me, at least) the two folders sb one. My instinct is to simply make "Favor…

Logon Login trouble with Win XP
by Guest Clint- 5 replies

I use Win XP Pro on 3 seperate computers. I did something really stupid yesterday... In trying to get rid of the annoying logon screen that appears everytime I start 2 of my computers, I looked online for a solution and found what I thought would work... I went to Start, Run, control userpasswords2, and unchecked the box that says Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. After clicking on Apply, another box comes up asking for a password. I typed an easy one for me to remember. Now, today, I cannot get to my desktop. Windows will not allow me past the Logon screen. I know this is a touchy subject, for security reasons. But I ne…
