How large of a USB HDD will Windows XP handle?
by Guest Opusita- 5 replies

A few years ago when HD's were starting to come down in price I bought a 80GB and a 120GB and installed them in external enclosures and accessed them via USB. At that time while doing research about them I read, heard or otherwise learned....or was left with a belief that XP...or my system could handle only up to a 300GB HD. Now with prices still dropping I would buy a 1 or 2 of the 500GB self contained external enclosures. Am I wrong regarding the 300GB limit?.......or how can I determine what my system can handle? Thanks, O

'Unknown Publisher' problem
by Guest Demon- 3 replies

Just built a new computer and installed Windows XP SP2 with NIS 2007. I've tried to update Norton, which has been successful as well as the Windows Updater. However, I've been trying to download and install programs like MSN Messenger, but the computer says "there is too little disk memory or the cabinet files are corrupt". I know I've not ran out of disk space (its 320gb HDD...) and the Cabinet files aren't corrupt either. A full scan with CCleaner and NIS tells me there are no problems. Also, while trying to download drivers or patches to fix glithes on games, the downloads are not digitally signed and won't install. Is there any way to stop this?

I am so annoyed as I keep getting windows opening that are for Ultimate Defender. My friend told me to download and scan with RogueMover Malabytes. I did that and it is better but the windows will not stop opening. It is so annoying. It has also changed my desktop to a full white screen. I even with to Control Panel and tried changing to another desktop design but I hit apply, ok but still get a full white screen. Thanks, Valerie

Reinstallation of XP
by Guest Nicole R.- 9 replies

So my hard drive recently got corrupted. After I recovered the data, I decided to replace my HD with one that had more GB. My question is, do I need to buy Windows XP again? I came previously installed on my Dell when I purchased it, so I would think that my license is still good, but I could be wrong. When I contacted Dell they told me they would send me the disk to reinstall, but it was just Service Pack 2, and since it is not working, I fear I need to purchase and install XP from scratch. Or did Dell just send me the wrong disk and I should ask for the whole program again and not just SP2?

Blue captions on icon view
by Guest Fred- 2 replies

After attempting to gain some external hard disk room by compressing the disk (XP Home--right click on disk icon, go to properties, check the box that says compress drive to save disk space), the computer hung up. I hit the cancel button, and thing seemed fine until the next restart. The drive now shows up as before, except that its label is in blue, whereas all others are in black; upon opening the window, the files within that drive are also in blue, where they used to be black, and some of the items have disappeared. I ran chkdsk in read-only mode, and it claimed that a number of indices had been changed; it then proceeded to delete those entries. …

Windows Logon Process unexpected error
by Guest Luis R.- 0 replies

I have one machine that has a problem when it begins to boot: there's a blue screen that says something like that: Stop: C000021a Fatal system error The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x0000000) The system has been shutdown There's no virus or spyware (I checked twice) and I don't see anything about an msgina.dll in the registry. The only thing that I think that can be the problem is that this machine once had installed the LogMeIn. I deleted all the references in the registry but there's not enough. Any ideas. Thanks for all your help

Dual Boot 2 XP Pro's
by Guest RonMcCullough- 4 replies

I am reformatting my PC for use by my wife and daughter. I would like to have two entirely separate XP Pro installations on the one machine and I was thinking of doing a dual boot, one XP Pro for my wife, one for my daughter (as anyone with kids knows, they download a world of crap, load down the PC with all sorts of questionable software, and have poor judgment selecting Web sites to visit and software to install). Question 1: what is the best way to do this, or is it a good idea at all? Question 2: is there a better way to achieve the same result (Virtual machines?). Question 3: what about licensing? Do I need two copies of XP or can I install the same c…
