slow internet connections with 2 computers.
by Guest Kevin- 3 replies

hi. I have a problem with the speed of my internet. I have 2 computers and a cable modem connected to a router(Netgear WGR614 v7 54Mbps wireless router). problem: when 2 computers are using internet(connected to a router) at the same time it's really slow, when one computer is using an internet(when other ones off) still connected to the router, it's also slow but bit faster, If I connect the modem directly to one computer it's super fast. I recently changed the company from AT&T to Time warner cable because I heard that cable is faster than DSL so I thought it might be fast also on 2 computers, but it isnt. Does anyone who experienced this and ha…

Removing XP
by Guest Julsie- 3 replies
I would really like some advice. I have been running Windows XP professional quite happily for some time on a dual processor computer to large hard drives. A few weeks ago I installed Vista on a separate Dr. Recently, I have managed to update all my programs and hardware so that Vista (business) is working very well for me and I would be quite happy to removed XP from my computer. Since installing Vista in addition to XP I am presented with a choice at boot up to either open "previous operating system" or "Vista" and have more often than not chosen to boot into Vista [ which will occur automatically if I did not choose XP]. I thought that all I would n…

Why does WMP not work properly?
by Guest Will- 1 reply

When clicking Playlist .asx stream with any version of Windows Media Player, as a first access after internet connect, WMP fails for that item and all others following in Playlist. The reported error is that it needs to be connected to the internet. If WMP is closed and restarted, it is then successful. This does not happen if beforehand, any other access (Internet Explorer, Mail, Real Player etc.) has been invoked. Why does WMP not work properly?

Copying files to CDROM - confusing instructions
by Guest Richard Fangnail- 14 replies
Have you found that instructions for doing this are inaccurate, if you search in microsoft.com or use the Help files in Windows Explorer? I've found that I could get it to work right using just Windows Explorer but the doc doesn't match it at all. One confusing thing is WHEN the files are actually copied. Sometimes it's right before you eject the CD and other times I think it's right when you copy the icons in Windows Explorer.

Virtual Memory (VM)Too Big? -- Slow Down in Processing
by Guest W. Watson- 16 replies
About two weeks ago, I was on my PC for day after day, and sometimes had 20 windows up. Things were getting a little slow. I even noticed typing was lagging some seconds. At some point, I got a message about increasing VM. I finally rebooted, but after a few days now still notice things are going slowly. How do I reduce the size of VM or even determine how big it is? I'm using 1G of real memory. -- Wayne Watson (Nevada City, CA) Web Page: <speckledwithStars.net>

Sony Vaio Desktop format
by Guest pheasant- 1 reply

Friend got new computers at work. Was told to either junk or take home old system. Told him I had a copy of XP Pro, and he had the key on sticker, so I'd format and reload a fresh copy to get rid of any sensitive data. Well, after I tried to format, it tells me disk is unformattable, possible disk failure, but I've got a real strong hunch I deleted someting Sony had hidden like the other makers do. Tried to do a repair, but everything is gone. I'm "over my head" as Fleetwood Mac sung 30 years ago. Thanks Mark

Return from Sleep Mode
by Guest Bill- 8 replies

After my desktop has been in Sleep mode for more than a few minutes, pressing the Sleep button wakes the PC, but the monitor does not come on. Sometimes pressing the Sleep button twice in rapid succession will work; other times the monitor never comes on - the PC must be forced off and rebooted. Anyone have a solution for this? I am not certain, but this may have started after I installed an Acer LCD monitor in place of a Sony CRT. Bill.

Bitwise copy of floppy disk
by Guest Arthur Rhodes- 8 replies
I have a floppy disk with a proprietary format. I don't know exactly what the format is. It's created on a drum machine. I'd like to make duplicates of this floppy. Making copies with the drum machine is extremely slow and tedious, so I want to do it with my computer. How could I do that? Windows can't read the floppy since its format is unknown and probably not supported. All I need to do is make a bit for bit copy of the floppy to another floppy. Does anyone know how I could do that? Thanks

Windows Scheduler Failure, 0x80041310
by Guest Bob in PGI- 3 replies

I have XP pro on my desktop & XP home on my laptop. Both are updated with all the latest Microsoft updates. I changed the computer names (domain name) on both computers because they contained personal data. All items scheduled in both windows schedulers failed to start. The windows scheduler will not permit change to new domain name. It automatically sets old domain name. When I “Apply”, I get error 0x80041310, “Unable to establish existence of account specified” because the Microsoft scheduler automatically inserts the old incorrect domain name. If I add a new account scheduler works OK with new account. I.e. with new account the correct (curr…

I have a license of Windows XP Professional (Traditinal Chinese) for one of my computer. That system broke down due to hardware problem. I have another computer without authorised license right now. Can I transfer the previous license to that computer? How? As I have used the activation key before, I can't used it again. What should I do? Of course I don't want to re-install the whole system and softwares again. Please advice. more info for reference: - I found a COA on the CD cover, but I can't find the product key (25 digits) - Labels on COA - " Windows XPPro Genuine Adv ChnTrad, Hong Kong Direct CD No Key, Made in Taiwan"
