by Guest Drew- 3 replies

I downloaded PowerPoint Viewer 2003 from Microsoft. I associated it with ..ppt files. It will not open a .ppt file attached to an email. It says there is no program associated with the file. If I move the file from the email to a folder, the ppt viewer opens it fine. How can I get the ppt viewer to open a file attached to an email? Thanks Drew

Reactivation after motherboard upgrade?
by Guest Phisherman- 2 replies

Will I have to reactivate XP after a motherboard replacement? This motherboard has integrated Ethernet, sound, and USB and is not the same model/brand as the original. I will be keeping the same memory, CPU, DVD, keyboard, display, power supply and hard drive. At what point is an upgraded PC considered another PC?

Cannot get rid of vsmon.exe process
by Guest Augustus- 1 reply

Years ago, I installed a free version of Zone Alarm, and uninstalled it after a few months after SP2 came along and I began using a hardware firewall. Zone Alarm is long gone and I've done countless registry cleanups and spyware/malware scans since then. I recently noticed that vsmon.exe is still a running process, slowly increasing it's memory pull up to 70Meg + over several days depending on online access. Well, this should be no problem, I figure. I disable the process in services, reboot and delete the windows/system32/zonelabs directory where it lived as well as dig in the registry and delete the reference. The process is not showing now at all, bu…

Steps before, during and after formating drive C:
by Guest InfoHungry- 6 replies

Hi all, I have very basic knowledge. My PC is about 3-4 years old and become extremely slow. My Internet Security gave me that many warnings that almost every keystroke would result in a warning. I could not back up to disk. took my PC to computer place to format Hard disk but they would not save my files and things for me. So they ended up convincing me that the best solution would be to install another internal Hard drive and called it D: and that became the drive that automaticaly comes up. I had to reinstall all my programs and devices. BUT, it is still very slow. I want to take everything out of c: and put it into D: (I have done some of it) and tha…

XP Professional SP2. My system restart from time to time with blue screen stay for 2 seconds, I cannot see what's on the screen before it restarts. I can only see something like 'new hardware or software..' something like that. I know there are dump files but it seems difficult to interpret and not sure the contents are useful. Any way to see more details why it restarts.

Windows Installer

Windows Installer recently stopped working and I have downloaded "WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86" when attempting to run it, it gives me the message "setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer." has anyone else had this problem and successfully fixed it? I have already attempted cryptographic service fix (xp_cryptofix) but still didn't allows the windows installer to succeed. I tried system restore but all I got was "system restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run system restore again" but restart yielded the same message.…

Keeping the FAT32 out of the fire

I’m using a PC with Windows XP Pro. Internally the PC uses NTFS, but I have an external Western Digital hard drive (FAT32) attached via USB. In the office I share a PC with three other people. I would like to protect the information I have stored on the WD1200 external other than disconnecting it and hiding it in a file cabinet. Is there any method you can suggest where it can be password protected or sharing denied?

Windows XP Freezes
by Guest RN_EMSEMT- 1 reply

Just reinstalled XP and am now noticing that XP will freeze occasionally without warning. At first, I noticed it when I tried to view a PDF document but corrected that by upgrading my Adobe reader. Now, I can run most programs (except MS Flight Sim X) without it locking up. The only way I can reproduce this is by "right-clicking" on either a desktop icon or on a drive icon under "My Computer". I can right-click within every program I have tried thus far but if I right click on any disk icon or file for that matter, the entire system freezes . . . the submenu will appear and the pointer will stay just that (no hour glass). The only way to reset this is…

Hi, I am running xp pro. After being infected with hijackers and bots and finally cleaning what I think is all of them, the desktop is white. I can see all the icons but when I go to change the back ground there are 2 choices and I am unable to click them. I see a none and a internet explorer choice. I wanted to see if I could use one of my pictures as teh background and it didn't stick. John

Booting vista alongside xp
by Guest John- 7 replies

Hi xp is on my primary sata disk and on my secondary sata disk there is a separate install of vista. So if I disable the primary (xp) disk in setup then vista boots from secondary disk. Can I make it easy to boot vista as needed by adding a vista entry in my xp boot.ini? If yes, what would be the entry considering the vista is on secondary (disk1?) drive and in first partition? Thanks Regards

Unable to Uninstall Network Adapter
by Guest Bill- 1 reply

I posted the following question to microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web and, following a dialog with Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking), he recommended posting the question here or a couple other newsgroups. I decided to restrict my query to this one for now. I am using Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension 4600. I have a home network that works well. However, when I attempt to access my Network Connections Properties, I receive an error message...specifically a small window titled "Network Connections" containing the message "An unexpected error occurred." The only choice is OK. I get this error when I select Start, Control Panel, Network Conne…
