The full message is: We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. This occurs when selecting any of the safemode's or a restore point. Windows hangs when booting into normal mode. <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309481> gives a solution which rests on being able to boot, if I read it correctly :( How to approach this please? Repair? thanks, Thufir

RE: Disappearing "Documents and Settings" directory - HELP! HELP! HELP I can symphonise with the bashing of head against hard object as I have a near similar problem but due to other factor. On last “unscheduled Windows update” came just as I was switching down as the local power company was switching off power for maintenance. So halfway through “do not switch off Microsoft down loading” the power was cut and in mid update to. On login I was surprised to see a deactivated user account of mine in place of what was before switch off an administrator user login. Now on log in I found either can I create a new admin user as it states there is already one, bu…

Create User Account For Home Network User
by Guest Gary Brown- 0 replies

Hi, How do I create an account for use by another PC on a home network? We have XP Pro, XP Home, and Vista Premium PCs that need to read from and write to files on other PCs. Currently, I get privilege violations when I try to read on some folders and can read some folders but not write to them. Sharing appears to be set up the same on all folders. (Privileges and user accounts differ. Not sure why.) As I understand it I need an user account to set privileges for access over the home network. Gary

Paswording a Jump Drive

Is there a simple means or perhaps a Windows or third party utility to enable putting an overall password for accessing the files on a jump drive which contains nmerous files? In other words, a single password which would open the drive for normal use, but render it useless to someone who didn't have the password. -- PT

Windows XP saving settings
by Guest GTFAST95- 2 replies

Hi, I am facing a slight annoyance with my newly built computer. Windows XP seems to take a considerable amount of time shutting down. It takes a long time to go through the "Saving settings...Logging off...Shutting down windows" screen. My system is pretty fast so I dont think its the system thats lagging. My HDD is pretty blank and I have no applications running, which would take time to shutdown. I really have no idea whats causing this, but its really annoying! I have run scan disk and found no problem, and have run a virus scan also no problems. If anybody has any suggestions please help. Thanks alot!

I cannot change the TIF up from 0, and this is the erroor message I get: "Please select a value between 1 and 0 for how much disk space temporary Internet files may use" I repair IE with this command: rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt", it does the job for a short time and then the problem is back just like before!!! BTW, some solutions I found, linked this issue to McAffee AV, but I do not have McAffee products installed on my machine.

Moving Files without Creating Copies
by Guest Dave- 2 replies

When I move jpg files from one folder to another (I do this a lot editing photos), copies are often created automatically. Typically, I wind up with 3-6 copies of one file before I'm through sorting. Getting rid of the copies sounds like it would be fairly straightforward, until you realize they are now all over the place. I realize there are search/sort ways to find the copies, but it would be very handy to keep them from being created in the first place,. Where can I find the rules for moving without copying? Search/Agent Ransack don't seem to help. Thx Dave

Partitioning stopped in middle
by Guest Kevin- 2 replies

Using PartitionMagic on an external USB drive, I have shrunk a FAT32 partition and expanding the NTSF partition. Right after the NTSF partition was expanded, it is "moving" the data as it's suppose to (presumeably to the beginning of that parition). Problem. My USB drive got unplugged at the power cord when "moving data" was at 32%. The autoplay feature started reading the directory, as it does when it gets turned on, so I cancelled that reading and said take no action. I had hoped that ParitionMagic would be able to pickup where it left off, but it didn't error out and nor is it accessing the USB drive at the moment. It's been this way for about 10 mi…

Need help increasing resources

Hi, Due to the early onset of Alzheimer's disease or whatever, I find it very helpful to have many windows open (my substitute for poor short term memory). I seldom shut my computer down and after a period of a few weeks I typically have a total of around 45 windows open. Its a mix, like 20 to 30 windows explorer, a few HTAs, 10 or more internet explorer, a couple Firefox, some notepads, hex editor, script editors, etc. Anyhow, at some point the system becomes unstable and new windows won't open. Or, if I close some windows, then I can open new ones, but within a couple of weeks the system will typically crash when I try to open something. I've got…

Identifying files that are in use by system and/or programs
by Guest plfrench- 6 replies

I had the big crash about a year ago and had to rebuild everything from scratch. At the time, I put all old files in a 13GB file called [Old Data]. I am afraid to delete it from my C drive due to the scary warning that some program may need one of those files. Is there a way to find out if any of my prorams or the system actually uses any of those old files? -- PLF

Drive letter nightmares
by Guest C J.- 3 replies

I have two internal harddrives using NFTS file system, split into five volumes. PC was working great, until the other night when attempting to shut down the pc... it wouldn't it would just hang. This afternoon - after getting tired of this $^#% - I booted from a XP Install CD and selected R for repair. When I was asked which install of windows I wanted to repair it was displaying 1.D:\Windows. It should be C:\windows. Using Map I looked at all the drive letters on the PC. I know my C: Bootdrive should be 104 GBs C is being reported as G, and D: is only 15.6 GB in size. The order of the drives was: A,B FLoppy disks C: D: E: [harddisk 0/Parts 1 -3],…
