Freezing up on shutdown
by Guest History Fan- 4 replies

I have a desktop PC running Windows XP SP2. DSL connection. Pentium D processor at 3.0GHz, 2GB of RAM. I'd say about 2-3 times a month, my computer will freeze up at shutdown. The 'Windows is shutting down' screen will appear, and then stay there. The only way to unlock the computer is to turn off the power to the surge protector. Can anything be done about this? Or is it just a common glitch with most Windows-based computers?

Chkdsk returns "Unable to determine volume version and state"
by Guest DRS.Usenet@sengsational.com- 0 replies

I don't think there's any silver bullet out there, but I thought I'd ask.... My WD2500 gets a "pass" on the quick data lifeguard diagnostics, reports as healthy by the OS (XP), has the correct size, but it's blank where it should say "NTFS". And chkdsk returns the "unable to determine volume..." message. I'm trying not to reformat and loose the data. After reading quite a few usenet posts like mine, I see a few "you might try software X", but no one is saying "software X worked for me", which is why I think I might be hosed. But if someone has an approach to get the data back, I'd like to hear it. Thanks. --Dale-- PS: Here are the symptoms I saw th…

Hi, When I have a picture on my desktop and when I play video I get a thin green line on the right hand side going down my monitor. If I change my desktop to a white screen it disappears. If I open My computer and drag it over to the right the line disappears over the white bit but still shows on the blue bar at the top. I am running win XP SP2 on a dell dimension 4700 4 gig ram. I have had numerous problems with norton internet security 2007 in the past but loaded the latest version yesterday and it seems to have solved all norton problems I had. Now though, this morning I have had 3 blue screen errors appear while in email that refer to PFN_LIST_CORRUPT. I don't have a clue what the problem is. Has anyone else experienced a problem like this and if so did you find a resolution for the problem. Thanks in advance for any assistance...don't have much more hair to pull out!

100% CPU while burning DVD's
by Guest chatts99- 4 replies
Hi I hope I am posting this in the correct forum as this is really a general question for which the answer may well be because "it is....". I am running XP home SP2 CeleronĀ® 2.4 GHz 512 MB Ram and my burning software is Nero version7. I appreciate that burning DVD's does take a lot of the CPU but is there something I can do ; upgrade RAM,CPU, download specific software or use another burning software that will subatantially reduce CPU usage and allow me to do other things on my PC. Or is it a case of tough beacause it is because it is.... ? Cheers chatts99

boot.ini issues in XP
by Guest nikmark- 3 replies
To get rid of a virus on my XP system, I used the system configuration utility to boot into safe mode (alternate). How do I get the system to boot back into normal mode? I had gone into the system configuration utility and set the computer to boot up in safe mode, minimal devices. Now my computer won't boot in safe mode or normal mode. I tried using F8 to choose the method of booting up. But it always takes me back to the black options screen (boot in safe mode, normal mode, last known working config. etc...) no matter what I choose. How do I get the computer to boot up normally again?

I need a codec to operate my windows media. I can't download. this. I have been around and around with Microsoft people on this and they sent me MGADiag.exe with i caCn't open. I get this message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You mayk not have appropriate permissions to access the item." But Microsoft sent it to me. They say my problem is not with them, but with Dell. My warranty with Dell has expired.
