Win XP-Home C:\ folders and files shared/visable by all users?
by Guest Art Hatch- 3 replies
Relates to Win XP-Homed edition, SP2. No "File or Priner Sharing" on/or Network access. No privacy from other 5 Users adding or reading files that show in what appears to be (Too) common folders and files. An example wold be: All 5 Users have a C:\Temp file. One of the 5 Users adds a *.jpg to his login C:\Temp folder, and all 5 Users will be able to login to each of their individual accounts and view the original *.jpg saved by one User. Why have individual login accounts if there is no privacy or security of individual date from being shared/viewed/added to by the other 4 Users?? I can not see any sharing priviledges to disable/reconfigure in XP-Ho…

Can you take VISTA back to XP ???
by Guest needyourhelp- 5 replies

Hi, My mother-in-law's laptop died and she replaced it with a new one that came with VISTA. She has two critical needs that only work with XP (her version of AutoCad and her IPAQ). She would prefer to not have to replace either at the moment. She is having a hard time adapting to VISTA and is frustrated with it. Can I take her VISTA machine and load XP prof sp2 over it replacing VISTA with XP ? If so, will it maintain the file system, programs, config, etc ? I figure we can always take the machine back to VISTA when she is ready. I know nothing of VISTA at the moment, and would prefer to leave it that way for a little while. So, can I move…

I have a boot problem with my PC -- an HP Pavilion with XP SP2 (and updates -- come on SP3!) on a 80Gig HDD and a 2.2Gighertz Celeron with .5Gig RAM. So I downloaded and ran Bootvis. I get ... disk cache write disabled...and I have NO idea what that means. Can anyone help? Thanks. -- entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

Restrict permissions for DVD drive?
by Guest smackedass- 4 replies

Hello, I know it's got to be possible, somehow, but is there someone out there that can provide a link that can tell me how to restrict a certain user profile/s from using a DVD drive? The mom, of course, wants to be admin, and wants her kids to have limited access, including use of the DVD drive. Thanks, in advance, smackedass

Can I run 2 copies of XP Pro on the same computer?
by Guest zulu- 4 replies

I have a one year old Dell Dimension 9150 running (Dell OEM) Windows XP Pro. It has 2 identical 26GB hard drives (C & D) an 1 GB of RAM I really want to start over, but to make it as easy as possible (I have VERY poor eyesight) I would like to reformat the second drive (D) and install a new (yet to be purchased) Windows XP Pro (non OEM!) and have the choice when I boot up of either. When I have the new version running to my satisfaction I would then like to reformat the *C* drive. I would then have a "new" computer _without_ all the Dell crap and without all the crap that I have introduced/ Is this possible? I assume that this would be legal …

While using a password with even Admin access and trying to close a task by pressing <CTRL+ALT+DEL> the message "Task Manager has been disabled by your Adminstrator" pops-up and I am not able to close the the task. This is with XP-Home-SP2. With the same PW (with Admin access) I am also not able to get "Folder Options" under "Control Panel" and with the result unable to View/Delete hidden files. Also unable to Run MSCONFIG using the same PW. But am able to create new PWs etc. Please help. -- Thanks & Regards.....Dorai

USB flash drive not present in My Computer or Disk Manager
by Guest Papa Prinny- 1 reply

We've got a user who is having problems accessing the contents of his USB flash drive. The funny thing is that, though Windows makes the standard "new hardware found" sound and a dialog balloon from the system tray states that new hardware has been detected, the drive does not appear in My Computer or Disk Management in the MMC (no drive letter, no disk without a drive letter). In Device Manager, however, "Generic Volume" does appear. Additionally, every time we attempt to remove the USB flash drive through the standard "safely remove hardware" routine, we will tell it to "stop" the device, but then the process will hang, and the device will not be "stopped". …

Folder access denied
by Guest Alan T- 3 replies

I think I found the solution before in this NG but forgot how to do that. Now I need to ask again: Some folders cannot be accessed in Windows Explorer, when I click the folder on the left pane the pop up box say: H:\Photos is not accessible Access is denied. I came across these problems before but forgot how to fix that. I recall there is something to do with file sharing or security settings.

Windows update not checking for updates
by Guest Ron Yuen- 3 replies
My XPPro equiped laptop (work supplied) is not checking for updates even though I have it configured to download updates but not to install automatically. I can manually go to MS to detect updates that are needed and can successfully install the updates with no errors but I need it to check for updates daily which it does not do. Are there any registry settings that I can check to make sure that I have the right info to enable this feature? It has never worked and I've had the laptop for 2 years now. Thank you in advance.
