VPN To Another User's PC?
by Guest (PeteCresswell)- 14 replies

I'm on Verizon's FIOS. My daughter, 100+ miles away, is Verizon's "Broadband" (seems tb DSL). My guess that in both cases the IP address of the PC is dynamic - i.e. it can change from logon-to-logon, or even from hour-to-hour. I VPN to various client sites every day - but I'm hooking into their VPN servers. Is there any hope of me being able to create a Remote Desktop Connection to her PC in order to troubleshoot some email issues? -- PeteCresswell

Service Pack 3 for XP
by Guest pc nerd- 14 replies

I read somewhere that there might be a service pack 3 for XP. Is that true or is it a rumor? I have a related question. I want to reinstall XP because it's acting kind of weird. Is it possible to save the updates in a folder so they can be reinstalled later? I know that it's possible to uninstall them.

Please Help: Crippling Disk IO speed
by Guest johnvmc@gmail.com- 8 replies

I originally posted this issue on the xp perform_maintain group and was directed over here for some more support so please pardon the cross post. I have a relatively new HP pavilion desktop with two 200gb HDs. Over the last few months I have noticed a dramatic decrease in performance to the point where now I am getting less than 1mbs disk read. I've looked at a number of different potential problems from DMA/PIO to malware issues, all to no avail. I've posted a ton of info on my blog at http://foris.blogspot.com/ and would sincerely appreciate whatever ideas you may have on how to go about troubleshooting this problem.

Guest users can no longer mount a USB drive after IE7 is installed. Requires Admin privileges. Huh?

Guest users can no longer mount a USB drive after IE7 is installed. Requires Admin privileges. Huh? Hey all, hoping someone has seen this and knows how to remedy it. I recently migrated our lab machines from IE6 to IE7. The problem is that now when a student user plugs in a flash drive, it requires Admin rights to mount and use whereas before you plugged it in and it worked. What the heck has changed to cause this to happen? I though it was a group policy setting but when I turn off all policies, it still asks for Admin rights to mount. Hope someone can help as this really blows. - Thee Chicago Wolf

by Guest Jack Cannon- 0 replies

I have a client with three machines. Each machine is operating under Windows XP Home Edition. Each machine has all updates installed and would appear to be identical. However one machine has a strange reaction when attempting to create a new folder on the root directory of the C: drive. The folder is created okay with the default name of "New Folder". When an attempt is made to rename the folder an error message appears with the title of "Error Renaming File of Folder". The critical error icon appears on the message box. The text within the message box is: "Cannot rename New Folder: It is being used by another person of program." "Close any pro…

Windows Desktop Search giving me headaches!
by Guest Neil Acquatella- 1 reply

My laptop began to get really, really slow, Page File Memory goes up to 3GB and up, I determined that some .exe files that belongs to WDS 3.01 are the cause of my problem, I suspect WDS is corrupt now. My laptop goes incredibly slow, Outlook renders the laptop unusable to the point that I have to force-shutdown it, pressing the power button for 7 secs. I have looked over the internet on how to uninstall WDS but all the solutions I have found have been unsuccessful. There is no WDS entry in the Add/Remove Programs (I'm using XP SP2 by the way), reinstalling WDS doesn't work at all, giving me a .log file, etc. Can anyone help me on this matter? I am deci…

I use to think a disk is a disk is a disk. I performed a ASR before on XP SP2 before with no problems but with the same vender disk .. i.e. the same model # and close SN# .... but now I'm trying to restore from a WD SATA 160 to a Seagate SATA 160 and get the following from restore Capacity of the replacement hard disk is insufficient, cannot be used to recover ..... On paper and XP see then as the same size ... actually the Seagate was 100k larger ... BIOS sees it as a 160 SATA disk it's partition and formated ... and before you say anything I tried it unpartitioned ... unformatted and the same thing ... Do you really need the exact disk for a ASR …

Windows XP Product Activation.
by Guest The_Newb_Avenger- 2 replies

I actually posted this on the wrong board, apparently - on the Windows Home Server board. Anyways... Okay, I have no idea how this happened, but my Windows has been unactivated. And, I have misplaced my Windows product key... Well, I want to find out what it is (of course)! Well, I used Registry Editor, RockXP, Belarc Advisor, Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder, and ViewKeyXP. Here's the crazy thing: they all have different product key numbers! And I checked to make sure it wasn't a number for something else... Not only that, but can someone tell me how to go to that activation again? <b>Everything is working fine - I just want to activate Windows again…
