I am running winXP Pro, Danish version I want to install the english version (I have a CD) I was told that all software would need to be re-installed, not just the operating system. Is this true? Is it possible to change the language to english without re-installing? Is it possible to re-install XP without it affecting currently installed software and other settings? thank you, Brian

password problem
by Guest Jeff- 8 replies

I have an XP Home SP2 PC that is giving me problems with user account passwords. The PC had a rather nasty spyware infection on it, and so I proceeded to clean it up. After everything was cleaned up, I rebooted the PC and all was ok. The next time I rebooted however, every user account on the PC (5 plut Administrator) is asking for a password, and there is no password on any of the accounts. I went into Safe Mode, and even the Administrator account is asking for a password. I downloaded and ran a tool called the Windows NT/2K/XP password change utility, which I have used before to reset unknown passwords on user accounts, but the utility says that all…

by Guest Lurka- 0 replies

Hello, I've got a problem with the file and printer sharing network component being disabled upon machine restart. Can you tell me if the status of that component is stored somewhere in the registry? I was thinking of monitoring it with Sysinternals Regmon to find out what is disabling it. Thank you, /_urka

TAPI Error messages
by Guest HonoredWriter- 0 replies

Hello, I have this very strange problem. I recently re-installed Windows XP Pro and I was attempting to re-install the analog modem. I received a "blue screen" stating that there was an error " IRQ > or less than" and the next message stated that "AFD.sys was attempting to write to a ROM location" and I must reboot in the safe mode. I determined the culprit was the modem card driver (possibly a install over a previous install. I corrected that error and the system booted correctly with all the bells less one whistle: I received an error message whenever I tried to send a FAX, "TAPI error of unknown cause" or words to that effect. I replaced the modem ca…

My motherboard died so I installed a new MB and CPU but the new system wouldn't boot to the old ide HD with xp installed. I then installed a new hard drive formatted it and installed xp sp2 on it from which my upgraded system booted fine. However, I cannot access my files that are pass word protected on the ide drive. No matter what I do the new mb will not boot to the old HD. My question is: How do I boot to the new drive with xp and then access password protected files on the secound HD also with xp? Thanks

HD change: problem with boot.ini
by Guest Hubert Rétif- 1 reply

Hi, I want to upgrade the HD of my DELL Laptop from 60 GB to 100GB, without of course having to install all again. Thus, I made Acronis (version 10) images from all 3 partitions on a USB hard disk, switched to the new HD, partition it, and restore the images on the corresponding new partitions. Booting this new system brings the error message: "hal.dll not found or corrupted" Examining boot.ini, I have the following: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect I don't quite understan…

Dual boot problems
by Guest Paul- 0 replies
I had XP and Vista in a dual boot config on 2 separate drives. I cloned my XP drive (needed a larger drive), removed the old drive, put in the new drive and had troubles so I obviously mucked up the bootloader and now only can boot to XP. I've tried EasyBCD and VistaBootPro with no luck. Exactly what do I have to do and where do I do it to add the info to allow me a choice to boot into Vista as well as XP? Thanks in advance.

Windows activation process temporarily offline?
by Guest stevil- 20 replies
I have cloned a XP build PC using ghost. Same process and image as around 100 pcs in our business. First thing I do is activate it (as indeed I have to as the 30 days has lapsed since it was cloned). This has worked great up to today. However for the last one, it said the internet wasn't available - it was - I've checked the LAN connection and indeed am ghosting another PC as I type this. The fallback, phoning Microsoft to activate it over the phone is unfortunately not working either - the number 0800 018 8354 (on the screen from the UK) is unavailable. Any ideas when this will be available? Thanks

Remote desktop stupid question...
by Guest Steve H- 6 replies
Just finding my way in networking so be gentle :-) Can remote desktop be used to let one user on an XPPro machine get at his own desktop from a second machine while another user is also logged on directly? I had hoped that one user could continue working in the background in this manner, while the second user takes over the fixed workstation screen and keyboard, but it seems one must log off for the other to continue. Assuming that the answer is unfortunately "no can do", I presume the file sharing avenue is the way this is done. This however seems to require some foreknowledge of what files one might need during any one remote session, so that the…

Hi, Got a strange problem. Each time I start my computer, Power point start too, but with an error message, this problem appears for each user configured in the computer. I have verified in each startup of the users, nothing about PP, I also verified in MSCONFIG, nothing too, and I didn't find any special stuff in the registry. Any idea ???
