Unable to delete files until...
by Guest Kramer- 8 replies

Hi. I've had a really hard time trying delete certain files. I tried deleting them one by one. I tried deleting the parent directory. I made sure that I owned the file. I tried the windows shell and 'cmd'. I rebooted and tried again--no luck. Then I rebooted into safe mode--no luck. I stopped the explorer.exe process--no luck. I wrote a small perl script which attempted to open each file for writing and reported that the open failed for each file. Then I went into cygwin and typed 'rm -rf <parent dir>' and *poof* they were all deleted. What happened? Why did all of these other attempts fail and cygwin succeed? Why can't standard Window…

Hi! Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I have a problem with my HP dv5000. After my harddrive crashed I can't activate my new one. I ran a ghost on the old disc to a new, then I started a windows repair installation on my new disc. This was no problem, but when i boot this disc up now, it says that windows needs to be activated before logon. I choose yes I want to activate windows but the activationguide doesn't start instead I come back to the login page. This just goes around and around. I can login in safe mode, but just without network. When I try to run the activation guide in this mode, it says that I can't activate windows XP in safe mode. What can …

Standby problem
by Guest ZeRu- 3 replies

Whenever I resume my computer from standby mode (whether by pressing mouse, keyboard, or power button), Windows (XP Pro, SP2) goes into shutdown instead of resuming normally. I'm always entering standby mode manually. Is it possible that I simply messed something in Windows or BIOS settings, or will I have to reinstall Windows? My board is Gigabyte 965P-DS3. Thanks, Z

by Guest Deysh- 3 replies

Hello. I hope someone has an answer for this. I've recently noticed that I can log on at the welcome screen by pressing only the Ctrl+the alt keys together and not the delete key. When in windows I can press these 2 keys together as well and bring up the Windows Security dialog. Here's the setup. Dell Precision M65 laptop with Windows XP SP 2 (factory load) All windows updates applied. Sticky keys and all accessibility options turned off. The Delete key is NOT physically stuck on the keyboard. Ran Symantec corporate antivirus scan, Trend Sysclean, AdAware scans and came up squeaky clean. Deleted cookies and temp internet files. Any ideas what could …

by Guest David E. Ross- 2 replies

I'm using the Fax application that came with Windows XP Home Edition SP2. How do I delete an obsolete entry in the address book? Can I rename an entry? (After all, not only do contact individuals but even the names of their companies change.) Is there a way to maintain the address book without being in the process of trying to send a fax? -- David E. Ross <http://www.rossde.com/> Concerned about someone (e.g., Pres. New video driver install fails because of possible bad registry ke
by Guest TimBarr- 0 replies

I tried to load new NVIDIA drivers on my machine and keep failing during the install. This happens no matter what version video driver I try to install. I even used Driver Cleaner Pro to ry and make sure all NVIDIA driver data was removed from my system. So I opened up regedit.exe and started searching for and deleteding all occurences of the phrase NVIDIA. When I got to a specific key, thie key would not delete. I could not open the key or change the key'e permissions. This key was HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation. What can I do to remove this key? I think this is what is causing my install to fail.
