Reinstalling an Outlook .pst file post-harddrive reformatting
by Guest LSordo- 6 replies
I had to reformat my harddrive and am having an issue getting Outlook proper to work again. I have a .pst file backed up, but had read elsewhere in here that the way to add it back in is NOT to copy & paste it over the new empty .pst file. First off, in my situation, is that correct? If not, what I’ve done so far was to: “In Outlook do File-Open-Outlook Data File and browse to your copied file. You then have two options - either set that pst file as the default mail delivery location, or copy the data from that file to your new file.” (This was copied from a post made on 8/22) My problem was that I didn’t see any options other than to double cl…

No audio device
by Guest tkshr- 5 replies

I have an eMachine with winxp home. I scrubbed and reformatted my computer due to a virus, everything worked fine until I clicked to install service pack 2. Now I have no audio and the device manager says no audio device. (I cannot uninstall sp2 as I have MS Office 2007 and it requires sp2). I have deleted the driver, got new driver from eMachine site. Upgraded driver, deleted and upgraded several times, the machine recognizes the audio device on reboot, but still when I check the audio there is never an audio device showing. As I said, this happened when I installed sp2, after reformat sound was working fine till then. How do I get my sound back? I …

Desktop Background quit working
by Guest Jack Nation- 3 replies

My computer uses WinXP and IE7. While I was surfing the net yesterday, the app "SpyShredder" begin scanning my system. (I don't want that app because I already have a virus scanner that works well). The "SpyShredder" finally stopped scanning, saying I had 156 infected files. When I finally got the "SpyShredder" removed from my hard drive and restarted my computer, my Desktop picture was gone leaving only a blue screen. I went to the desktop Display Properties, selected the Desktop tab, and found it no longer would let me install or choose a desktop backdrop. How can I fix this? -- Sincerely, Jack Nation

by Guest Saqib Ali- 5 replies

Hello All, I am working on to deploy Terminal Services for visitors. I need to disable "Explore" in the right-click context menu. I know how to disable the right-click context menu completely, but that is not what I want to. I just want to remove that "Explorer" item or gray it out. (screenshot at http://security-basics.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-disable-explore-and-open-folder.html ) And now page 2: I also want to disable the "Open Folder" button when you download and save a file using IE. (screenshot at http://security-basics.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-disable-explore-and-open-folder.html ) Any thoughts on how these can be achieved? Thanks Saqi…

My 1gb and 2gb memory sticks are showing power in my Compaq laptop, but they do not appear in my Explore/file list. They did before. And yes, I recently did a clean up of unused programs on the computer. Was I dumb and removed something that I need to read the dopey stick?

OS won't see entire drive
by Guest AMD- 15 replies

I've got a 300gb ata133 drive as master. I've got several other drives and have windows installed on one. Well, the OS only sees 127gb and it's a 300gb drive. It was working fine before, but now not all is seen. Partition magic 805 says bad on the drive for bad partition info or something. format does not work and pmagic cannot format or create a partition on it or anything. dos format does not work nor does right clicking on the drive and saying format. the disk management tool also shows it as the 300gb, but it won't let me format it or anything. no messages that help at all as unable to format is all that happens.

Removing personal info from Word document
by Guest Michel- 4 replies
Hi, I made myself a resume in Word which I want to post on the Internet. I have removed my personal data, like name and address from the document, and plan to create an Acrobat pdf file from this Word document. But when I look at the pdf file in explorer I still see my name in the abstract of the file. Hover your mouse pointer above a Word document in Explorer and you will see what I mean. So, this information is still available. My question is, what do I need to do to remove this personal data? I already looked in the properties of the Word document, and saw my name in it. I removed this, but still my name comes back in the file abstract. Michel

Re: error 1406 Helo, I recieve the same error on Windows Vista Home Premium when trying to install iTunes, adobe Acrobat reader, Microsoft Works and Vista codec pack. Sometimes I get the error: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file..." or "Cannot open file for writing!" This error occured after a month using my new Dell Dimension PC. I formatted my HD and reinstalled Vista that I got from dell. The error still occours. Then I thought XP would work better but after installing it the same errors occoured. I thought it might be a hard drive failure but the diagnostics I have run don not show any problems. If this problem is familiar t…

Windows Installer Failure
by Guest Chris Harris- 2 replies

I am using a Dell Dimension with Windows XP SP2. I installed Windows Installer Cleanup on 8/16/07 because I suddenly had a problem with Acrobat 5.0 that I use. I had previously had the same problem (it would not display ..pdf files in the web browser) and had uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat. After this, I began haviing all sorts of problems. The big problem right now: when I click on setup.exe in a given program, for example Acrobat and HP Printer software, nothing happens. It does not install. I get an hourglass on the Adobe software, and it goes away. The HP software flashes for a moment, and then goes away. Nothing happens. I downloaded the lat…

C1E - Enhanced Halt State
by Guest RJK- 0 replies

Does anyone use this, or if you like, can it cause any problems ? ....currently it's off in my bios, ...bit wary about switching it on :-? ....pasted from Anandtech :- "Whenever the OS executes the halt instruction, the CPU enters what is known as the halt state. Architecturally, what's going on in a halt state is the clock signal is shut off to the CPU for some period of time. With no clock signal, none of the logic in the chip will do anything and thus power consumption is reduced. Performance is also significantly reduced; however, the halt instruction isn't usually called during application usage, so the performance aspects of the halt state aren't …

Windows XP availability

I currently have an 7 year old Windows 2000 pro system that I use with Photoshop CS. Eventually I will upgrade to Photoshop CS3 which will not run on Win2000. Because of the limited ram capabilities and the age, Vista is not an option? How long will Microsoft XP Pro upgrade be available for purchase?
